Toshiba to launch TVs with DivX Plus Streaming certification

DNP Toshiba to launch TVs with DivX Plus Streaming certification

Just in case you didn’t have enough content options from the likes of Roku and your cable set top box, Toshiba has partnered with Rovi to integrate the DivX Plus Streaming codec into a new line of TVs. The streaming format promises enhanced multimedia controls like multi-language subtitles, resumable playback across devices and Dynamic Resolution Scaling, which should be good for those with fluctuating bandwidth. However, there aren’t that many services behind the format just yet, though Knowhow Movies by Dixons Retail in the UK has pledged its support. Still, one can never have enough ways to entertain the kids.

TV Guide redesigns One-Stop TV app for Android, catches up with iOS version

TV Guide redesigns OneStop TV app for Android, catches up with iOS version

Remember how TV Guide relaunched its mobile app for iOS last summer? Well the company’s Android app, One-Stop TV, is finally catching up with the iOS version thanks to a complete redesign. The app includes TV Guide’s popular Watchlist feature, a personalized profile which lets you find different ways to watch shows — from sources like TV, on-demand, streaming and DVD. One-Stop TV automatically links to the HBO GO, Hulu Plus, The CW, MAX GO and Crackle apps, allowing you to access shows instantly. Another new feature, New Tonight Trending, provides a “social hot list” of what others are watching. But wait, there’s more! The app gains a heavy dose of social networking integration plus content filtering, curated watchlists (including topics such as celebrities and sports) and original editorial content. Want to try it out? Follow the Play Store link below, then check out the PR after the break.

Sony starts building PS3s in Brazil, The Last of Us and GTA V to get localized releases

Sony to start building PS3s in Brazil, The Last of Us and GTA V get localized releases

Even as we await next generation consoles, Sony is extending the battlefield for the current generation by focusing on Brazil. In an event today it announced that for the first time it will be building PlayStation 3s locally in Manaus, a move executives stated will inject $300 million into the local economy and drive “significant” price reductions in the region. Brazilian gamers can also expect more game release support, with news that The Last of Us will have a localized version available simultaneous with the worldwide launch, and GTA V will be the first game in the series to include Brazilian Portuguese localization. That’s a major shift for the area, especially considering the PlayStation 2 (yes, that’s a 2) only officially launched in Brazil in 2009. As the company extends its “Viva Em Estado Play” marketing campaign, it will also offer a 250GB PS3 bundled with God of War: Ascension for R$1,099, and is running a contest to win the first Brazilian-built PS3.

Seagate Central review: media sharing for the home, plus backup too

Seagate Central Review

We really enjoy the ability to consume content on any device from just about anywhere we may roam. The cloud has been a big part of making that happen, but there are still a few things the cloud can’t do nearly as well as local storage — namely, share large files and provide continuous full backups of large media libraries. Attempting to bridge that gap is the Seagate Central. Ranging in price from $189 to $259, depending on whether you get it with 2TB, 3TB or 4TB of space, the Central connects to your home network and gives you a single place to store or back up your content, making it accessible both at home and on the go. That’s the idea, anyway. But what about the reality?

Free TiVo Desktop PC software disappears June 5th, $16 Plus version will remain

TiVo Desktop's free PC version disappears June 5th, $16 Plus version will remain

Windows-using TiVo owners should make a beeline for the TiVo Desktop download link below, because on June 5th its free edition is going away. This software allows user to bring their personal music and photos to the TiVo, and more notably, transfer recordings from the DVR to their PCs. The paid version that adds support for transferring videos to the TiVo and DVR recordings to mobile devices will still be available at a cost of $15.99, lowered from $24.99. As ZatzNotFunny points out, there have been indications that a replacement may be in the works, but nothing — including updates for Windows 8 — has been promised yet. The free Mac version is still kicking, but it’s only good for pushing photos and music to the box, although Tech of the Hub notes several free alternatives (for both platforms) including kmttg, PyTiVo and iTivo. The current software hadn’t seen many updates recently, so if this is just clearing the table for a version that ties into the TiVo Stream transcoder, it might be worthwhile.

Starz, Encore and Movieplex Play apps arrive on Android

Starz, Encore and Movieplex Play apps arrive on Android

Starz Play has had a home on iOS since October, but now it’s made the jump to Android, and it’s brought Encore Play and Movieplex Play along with it. By wielding the apps, users can stream video from the TV network over WiFi and 3G — provided they have a cable subscription with AT&T U-verse, Cox, DirecTV or Verizon. Comcast customers aren’t entirely left out in the cold, however, as they can already catch content licensed from the television channel through the Xfinity website and apps. If you’re ready to get your fill of Starz flicks, hit the bordering source links for the downloads.

Must See HDTV (May 6th – 12th)

It’s spring / season finale time, and as the temperatures rise outside the TV shows we’ve been watching all winter are starting to fade away. Meanwhile, the NBA and NHL playoffs are just starting to get good with plenty of interesting matchups to be found. Finally, Gamer hits shelves this week, the first of post-converted 3D Blu-rays created due to a deal between Lionsgate and Samsung. Look below for the highlight this week, followed after the break by our weekly listing of what to look out for in TV, Blu-ray and videogames.

Season four of this comedy wraps up this week and NBC has not indicated whether or not it will be returning for another semester. Unfortunately, even as fans of the show, watching this last season go on without creator Dan Harmon has us wondering if coming to an end now is actually the better option (remember Heroes?) Of course, we’re still in for six seasons and a movie, so we’ll see what happens.
