Kontron preps first Tegra 3based MiniITX board, homebrew gets an ARMfull

Believe it or not, there’s a potentially cheaper (and more customizable) way to get NVIDIA’s quad-core Tegra 3 into your life than to spring for a Nexus 7. Kontron is readying a rare Mini-ITX motherboard, the KTT30, that combines the ARM-based chip with expandable RAM and a trio of mini PCI Express slots for expansion like a micro SATA drive or a 3G modem. The external ports are more the kind you’d find on a do-it-yourself x86 PC, too: full-size HDMI, USB and even Ethernet make a show at the back. The only hurdles are an unusually throttled back 900MHz processor speed and, quite simply, the lack of release details. Kontron hasn’t promised more than a release “coming soon” — with much more complete Tegra 3 devices now hitting the $199 mark, though, we can’t see the KTT30 putting much strain on any budding hobbyist’s wallet.

Giada i53 aims at HTPCs with Ivy Bridge and USB 3.0

A manufacturer has finally decided to build a mini PC featuring silicon other than Intel’s Atom or AMD’s various APUs. In this case it’s Giada, today announcing its new i53 “book sized” mini PC. The company has managed to cram in Intel’s Ivy Bridge processors into a 26mm thick chassis, saying that the whole package only consumes 35W. The other specs aren’t bad either.

The PC comes with a Core i5 processor by default, but there’s options for Core i3 and Core i7 chips as well. 4GB of RAM comes as standard, as does a 500GB HDD. The integrated HD 4000 GPU will handle high-definition video with ease via the HDMI output, and there’s a VGA output as well. The company has thrown in a remote control for good measure, and you can boot the PC using the remote too.

Ports for the PC include 4x USB 2.0, and a single USB 3.0 jack. In addition, there’s gigabit Ethernet, WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth, and a multi format card reader. Still, you’ll be paying a little more for the extra horsepower, with the default build costing around $520. Giada hasn’t said exactly when the i53 will be shipping, but you should be able to pick it up from Amazon or Newegg in the not too distant future.

VESA’s Mobility DisplayPort standard links smartphones to PC displays, jabs MHL

VESA's Mobility DisplayPort standard links smartphones to PC displays, jabs MHL

If you own a modern Android smartphone, there’s a reasonable chance you’re familiar with MHL for video out to a TV. The format saves the trouble of adding an extra port, but it’s really only intended for HDMI-based destinations and occasionally runs into compatibility issues. VESA is hoping to settle all that with its newly available Mobility DisplayPort standard, or MyDP. Existing micro-USB ports will still serve as the output, but you’ll have the option of plugging into DVI or VGA displays with the right adapter, in addition to HDMI and full-size DisplayPort. Picture connecting to an older projector and you’ll see why that might make sense. The new spec will charge up your device like with MHL, but it also has about 1Mbps of bandwidth for input, such as keyboards and trackpads in some future lapdock. Video still tops out at 1080p and 60Hz, so there’s no hooking into a 4K display here. The real advantage, for many, is simply in having a broadly-adopted standard in the first place: VESA backing sees 180 companies tacitly endorsing the idea, producing a big improvement over the patchwork results that we’ve seen from MHL’s much smaller alliance. The chief obstacle is the wait for the first smartphones, Ultrabooks and tablets with MyDP, which could be months or more away.
