Humble Comedy Bundle lets you pay what you want for laughs, big spenders get Louis CK

DNP Humble Comedy Bundle lets you pay what you want for Maria Bamford, Tig Notaro

The Humble business model can apply to anything. Now, you can pay what you want for stand-up comedy in addition to e-books, music and video games. For the next two weeks, you can get comedy specials from Maria Bamford, Tig Notaro, Hannibal Buress and Jim Norton for as little or as much as you care to spend. If you exceed the average donation though (currently $8.60), you’ll take home Louis C.K.‘s killer Live at the Beacon Theater set and three releases from his very good friend, the late Patrice O’Neal. As is the case with other Humble Bundles, anything you download is DRM-free and your donation supports great causes — all for less than a comedy club’s typical two-drink minimum.

Samsung to show off 98-inch Ultra HD video wall, 31.5-inch 4K monitor at IFA 2013

Samsung

As surely as there will be another round of tradeshows this fall and winter, companies like Samsung will be there with bigger and better tech to show off, which consists of new 4K displays this time around. At IFA 2013, Samsung plans to show off this 98-inch commercial Ultra HD “video wall”, as well as a 31.5-inch Ultra HD monitor. Samsung unveiled its 85-inch UHDTV at CES earlier this year it promised sizes would grow so we’re not surprised it’s combining slim-bezeled versions to create this massive screen headed to storefronts near you. There’s no picture yet for the 31.5-inch monitor and few details, but Samsung is ready to battle with competition from the likes of ASUS and Sharp with detailed color calibration adjustments and support for 99 percent of Adobe’s RGB space.

Android VP Hugo Barra leaves Google, joins Chinese phone maker Xiaomi (updated)

Barely a month after he was showing off Google’s new Nexus 7 tablet Hugo Barra is departing to join Xiaomi, according to AllThingsD. Part of Google since March 2008, as the Vice President of product management for Android he’s been a regular face to anyone that’s watched Google I/O events and Nexus product launches over the past few years. With his exit Barra follows Android creator Andy Rubin, who stepped away from the Android team three months earlier. It’s a huge score for Xiaomi, a company that goes from strength to strength in China, with smartphones that run on a heavily customized (and customizable) Android ROM. The company’s also dabbled in smart TV boxes, which could make for a very familiar role for a former Googler. According to Xiaomi, he will be in charge of steering the company’s global expansion starting in October.

Update: We have received a statement from Google that confirms Hugo Barra’s departure:

“We wish Hugo Barra the best. We’ll miss him at Google and we’re excited that he is staying within the Android ecosystem.”

Update 2: Barra’s taken to Google+ to announce that he will indeed be joining Xiaomi as VP Global in a few weeks. We’ve added his blog post after the break and have updated the post to reflect the confirmation. Xiaomi has also confirmed the appointment.

Twitter acquires Trendrr to bolster real-time coverage of TV trends

Twitter acquires TV analysis firm Trendrr

If it wasn’t already clear that Twitter is serious about monitoring TV trends, the company just proved it by acquiring Trendrr. The deal gives Twitter new tools for both tracking social network activity during TV broadcasts and delivering that information to advertisers and media producers. While the two companies aren’t specific regarding their plans, Trendrr is scaling back its operations: its Curatorr service will keep going, but it will stop taking customers for its Trendrr.TV engagement tracker. It will be some time before we see the results of the acquisition, but the increasingly tighter links between Twitter activity and TV suggest that the buyout could prove worthwhile in the long run.

Nintendo announces 2DS handheld gaming system, $129 on October 12 (video)

Nintendo announces 2DS handheld gaming system, $129 on October 12

Well, this is certainly a surprise. While the other big names in gaming are rolling out their new home consoles, Nintendo’s bringing a new handheld to the table. Called the 2DS, it looks like a 3DS laid flat without the hinge, and as you might surmise from the name, no three dimensional graphics. IGN reports that the 2DS will come in red and blue (with the front either being black or white, depending upon region) and will cost $129 when it arrives on October 12. For your money you get a handheld that packs dual screens, two cameras round the back, a single speaker and a 3.5mm headphone jack, plus a 4GB SD card.

The new handheld is considered to be a part of the 3DS family, and as such, it can play all 3DS and regular Nintendo DS games, and also provides access to 3DS apps like the Nintendo eShop. Nintendo is positioning the 2DS as a far more affordable option than the $169 3DS, which should make it the more palatable choice for parents with small children. Strong move, Nintendo, get ’em hooked while they’re young.

BBC iPlayer for iOS updated with AirPlay streaming for downloads, simpler searching

BBC iPlayer for iOS updated with AirPlay streaming for downloads, simpler searching

BBC iPlayer for iOS just got a big update that makes it easy to keep watching — even in less than ideal conditions. The app now supports AirPlay streaming for downloaded shows, letting users watch on the big screen when there’s no internet connection. Searching is also much improved; iPlayer now groups results by series, and iPad users get a dedicated search section. It’s easier to start watching recommended shows, too. The update is sadly limited to the UK version of iPlayer, but those fortunate Brits can grab the new app through the source link.

Epson launches MHL-enabled 1080p 2D/3D projector for $999

Epson launches 1080p 2D3D PowerLite home cinema projector for $999

It’s rare that we document the arrival of a new projector, but we thought that Epson’s PowerLite Home Cinema 2030 deserved some special attention. It’s the company’s first unit that offers an MHL-enabled HDMI port, enabling you to output video from your Android phone or tablet. Otherwise, the unit offers 1080p 2D/3D visuals, built-in speakers and a 2,000 lumens bulb. It’ll be available at the start of September from Epson’s online store for $999 — a small price to pay to get those Netflix episodes of Breaking Bad splattered over your walls.
