aTV Flash 21 black offers very specific favorites, TV shows in playlists

It’s not hard to find a media app with some type of favorites system. It’s tougher to find one that lets us be very specific on just what a favorite can be. The new aTV Flash (black) 2.1 update, however, will let Apple TV modders be as exacting as they’d like: they can favorite individual videos, whole seasons and even broader search terms. Catch-up viewers get their own treat in the form of TV show playlists that simplify watching episodes back-to-back. A slew of further tweaks are inside, including iOS 6 support, so there’s every incentive to upgrade for those who rely on not-quite-official firmware for Apple’s living room hub.

Must See HDTV (January 14th – 20th)

Must See HDTV January 14th 20th

As we return from CES (and dive headlong into the North American International Auto Show) we’ve got a number of our favorite TV shows returning from break. While sci fi fans wave good-bye to one high profile series they can welcome another this week, and sports fans are just making it until the conference championship games on Sunday. Look below for the highlights this week, followed after the break by our weekly listing of what to look out for in TV, Blu-ray and videogames.

Continuum
Often recommended in our comments during its Canadian run on Showcase last year, this sci fi show finally starts airing in the US tonight. You can hit Wikipedia for a summary of the plot (it involves time travel) or check out the trailer after the break, but until we watch it’s going to be hard to explain. For now, just know it comes highly (and often) recommended by our readers, so it’s probably worth a shot.
(Syfy, January 14th, 9PM)

Fringe
Fox’s laws of science bending / universe and time stream jumping sci fi show finally ends its run this week. Unlike Continuum we’ve been watching every episode, but again, due to the presence of time travel as a plot device, your guess is as good as ours as to what’s going on at the moment.
(Fox, January 18th, 8PM)

Archer
Our favorite cartoon spy is back on FX this week. If you don’t know about Archer, you should immediately lock yourself away with nothing but a Netflix subscription to get familiar with the one of the more drunken and incompetent contributors to national security that there ever could be. We’re definitely in the Danger Zone.
(FX, January 17th, 10PM)

First Ultra HD channel goes live in Europe

First Ultra HD channel goes live in Europe

Eutelsat Communications launched the first dedicated demonstration Ultra HD channel in Europe on January 8th. Delivered via satellite with the resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 (4K) at 50 frames per second — the European equivalent to 60p — the stream is encoded in MPEG-4 with help from video compression solution provider, ATEME, and transmitted at 40 Mbps. This is over twice the bandwidth used by most 1080i broadcasts, but not necessarily an indication of future Ultra HD broadcasts utilization, as they’re expected to use the more efficient HEVC codec — depending on color space and other factors, Ultra HD broadcasts might use less throughput than 1080i does now. With only three very expensive Ultra HD TVs on the market, there aren’t many who can take advantage of this. Hopefully if you are one of the lucky few, you’re in a position to take advantage of this native content on your latest prized possession.

BenQ unveils two 1080p 3D projectors at CES

BenQ unveils two 1080p 3D projectors at CES

BenQ isn’t holding any keynotes, but the company does have a presence here at CES. In fact it rolled out a pair of 1080p 3D projectors today for the home theater enthusiast. The W1070 and W1080ST are the latest in the company’s consumer line, and they’re powered by DLP’s Dark Chip 3 which is usually found in high-end models. But at $1,099 and $1,299, respectively, the W1070 and W1080ST certainly aren’t priced for the high end. The 1080 can project images up to 100 inches wide from as little as six feet away. It’s even ready for proper color calibration right out of the box. Both machines are also compatible with NVIDIA’s 3D Play and DLP Link, plus they’re sporting dual HDMI ports. Both are available now. For more info check out the PR below.

Rapoo TV claims to make ‘any HDTV smart,’ is compatible with iOS and Android

Rapoo TV claims to make 'any HDTV smart,' is compatible with iOS and Android

Less than 24 hours after announcing the H9080 wireless headphones, Rapoo’s let it be known that its CES 2013 repertoire also includes a little something for the living room (or bedroom, depending on where you prefer to enjoy your downtime). With its Rapoo TV, the company’s touting the ability to turn any HDTV into one with intelligent features — essentially, though, it is a wireless receiver that allows iOS and Android devices to connect to it, allowing them to mirror mostly any content on the bigger screen. Of course, there might be some better options for iOS users (and Android soon, we imagine) in the market already, but the company’s still hoping some folks may have room for yet another set-top-like unit in their home. The company says the Rapoo TV will be available sometime in Q1 of this year, however there’s no word on pricing just yet.

Disney announces WreckIt Ralph will arrive for download before DVD, Bluray

Following the lead of other studios like Fox with its Digital HD push, Disney has announced its first movie that customers will be able to buy on download and streaming services weeks before the disc is released. Wreck-It Ralph is a worldwide hit, bringing in $277 million and counting at the box office, but the first time you’ll be able to snag it (legally) for home viewing in the US is February 12th in HD and 3D on supported services. The four disc Blu-ray 3D combo set is priced at $39.99 and will ship nearly a month later on March 5th, along with the 2-disc Blu-ray ($31.99), DVD and standard def video on-demand versions. Disney hasn’t tipped its hat about any digital efforts itself to replace the Online streaming site it shut down in November, but clearly it’s preparing for a multi-format future — we’ll see if we hear any more interesting details during CES in the coming week.

Epix heading to PlayStation 3 and PS Vita

Epix heading to PlayStation 3 and PS Vita

iOS, Android, Google TV, XBox — heck, Epix even has an app for the BlackBerry PlayPook. So, what’s surprising is not that the premium movie channel is coming to the PS3 and Vita, but that it took so long for it to happen. Soon Sony’s gaming faithful will be able to download the app from the PlayStation Store and start streaming the network’s sizable catalog of movies and original content. Of course, you’ll have to have actually subscribe to it through your cable provider first, but you knew that already, didn’t you. For more check out the PR after the break.
