Time Warner Cable abandons wireless business plans, sells 72 percent Clearwire stake

Time Warner Cable has decided against entering the wireless business, and as such, it’s selling the 7.2 percent stake in Clearwire it picked up in 2008. Thanks to the dwindling value of the network provider, it’s $550 million investment is now only worth around $73 million. Current investors have first refusal on the shares, but it’s unlikely to find takers quickly, given that both Intel and Google dumped their interests at a steep loss and even Sprint has ceased to be its majority owner — although the company itself did tell The Wall Street Journal that it’s doing perfectly fine, but thanked it for asking, before quickly dashing off to “a thing.”

Microsoft hires former CBS executive to produce original video content for Xbox

Microsoft reportedly hires former CBS executive to produce original video content for Xbox

Earlier today, rumors started circulating around the web about Microsoft having hired a former CBS executive to oversee the creation of original video content for the company’s famed console. It didn’t take long for the whispers to turn into something more concrete, however, as Redmond has now made it official, announcing that Nancy Tellem will be the outfit’s Entertainment and Digital Media president. According to Microsoft, Tellem’s set to take over a new production studio in Los Angeles, California — one that’s going to be in charge of developing “interactive and linear content for Xbox and other devices.” Certainly this could be seen as a smart move from Microsoft in its quest to take over the living room reigns, which would make perfect sense given the Xbox’s obvious transition from a simple gaming console to an all-around media hub. You’ll find all the official details inside the presser below.

Fox kicks off its Digital HD initiative by joining Google Play and YouTube, offering movies early

Google Play and YouTube add Fox movies and TV shows, use Prometheus as a lure

Fox embraced a radical thought when it outlined its Digital HD initiative earlier this month: customers are more likely to buy digital movies if the content isn’t artificially delayed and priced to match the releases on conventional discs. The studio is about to see if that gamble on common sense pays off. As of today, you’ll find 600-plus Fox movies ready to buy or rent in HD across every major digital video store in the US, with many downloads cleared to arrive ahead of their physical counterparts at lower prices that reflect a disc-free reality. The media giant has also decided to play nicely with Google after a longstanding absence, putting its movies and TV shows on Google Play Movies and YouTube. Its tentpole movie release Prometheus is unsurprisingly being used as the prime incentive to try Digital HD; the title is available online three weeks before the Blu-ray launch at a more reasonable $15 price. The sci-fi thriller is even Fox’s first movie destined for UltraViolet cloud lockers. Only Americans will have expanded access to movies and TV at first, but it shouldn’t be too long before many countries can be creeped out by Michael Fassbender’s android — including on their Android devices.

The Dark Knight Rises Blu-ray trailer appears, confirms December 3rd release date

The Dark Knight Rises Bluray trailer appears, confirms December 3rd release date

Good for over $1 billion at the box office, Christopher Nolan’s third Batman movie is probably this year’s most anticipated home video release (The Avengers next week may have something to say about that) and now Warner Bros. has given us a trailer for The Dark Knight Rises on Blu-ray. Previous movies in the series have always delivered on Blu-ray, as well as his other recent hit, Inception. Unfortunately the video maxes out at 480p, but we don’t need any additional resolution to see the release date listed for both disc and digital download is December 3rd. Rumors have flown about different releases dates and possible extras like a director’s cut, but recently sources have indicated no such extended offering is in the works. Whether you think the flick was long enough (or even too long), you can press play to check out the clip embedded after the break…and clear the first Monday in December on your calendar for a trilogy viewing marathon.

Must See HDTV (September 17th – 23rd)

Football is officially in swing, and this week we’ve got a couple of big college matchups with LSU taking on Auburn and Michigan vs. Notre Dame. Thursday is also one to keep an eye out for with Cam Newton taking on the Giants in prime time, NBC rolling out its usual slate of shows and a few season finales from FX. Look below for the highlights this week, followed after the break by our weekly listing of what to look out for in TV, Blu-ray and videogames.

Indiana Jones: The Complete Adventure
After Star Wars last year, Lucasfilm is back with another restored series in HD, this time Indiana Jones. Consisting of all three movies and another, completely unrelated flick plus lots of extras, it should be quite an experience for the fans. Check out the announce post here for more details on the enhancements, or check out the trailer embedded after the break..
($65 on Amazon)

The Mob Doctor
Coming in tonight after the season premiere of Bones, we’re not sure if this show will stick around any longer than The Chicago Code did, but we’ll give it a shot. Centered around a surgeon who somehow ends up paying off a mob debt with some off the books surgery, we’re just happy to see PJ from My Boys back on TV — if Jim Gaffigan drops by we’re in for the duration.
(September 17th, Fox, 9PM)

Amazon placating delayed Marvel Cinematic Universe pre-orderers with free Avengers Blu-rays

About a week ago we got the bad news that Marvel’s entirely over the top Cinematic Universe: Phase One Blu-ray set would be delayed until spring 2013 while Disney works up a new case, but there is a silver lining for those who preordered from Amazon. One of our readers forwarded us an email sent out to those who preordered, indicating that in the meantime, they will receive The Avengers two disc Blu-ray / DVD combo package, free of charge. It’s not a S.H.I.E.L.D. suitcase w/ glowing Tesseract cube built in of course, but we guess it will have to do until the replacement packaging is ready to go. Anyone who put in an order between June 1st and August 28th are eligible for the free copy and should have received their redemption code via email.

[Thanks, Nick]

Ceton Echo WMC extender beta units set to ship in October, on target for November release

Ceton Echo WMC extender beta units set to ship in October, on target for November release

Now that Ceton has pushed its Companion mobile apps for Windows Media Center out the door, our attention returns to the hardware we got a look at during CES. A blog post from the company indicates the Echo extender has passed FCC and CE certifications, with alpha tests under way. If you’re not in position to borrow a unit from the home of an employee, your next opportunity to obtain one will come when the beta starts. The 1,000 applicants accepted should receive ordering information around the end of this month before hardware ships on October, which, if there are no delays, could mean general availability as soon as November. Still waiting for word on that slick six tuner Q DVR? So are we, but an update, along with final specs for the Echo version 1, are promised at the end of the month.

Cox TV Connect for iPad gets remote DVR scheduling, access to the guide at home or away

Cox TV Connect for iPad gets remote DVR scheduling, access to the guide at home or away

The Cox TV Connect for iPad app that brings live TV streaming to the tablet while customers are at home has received another update that gives it some capabilities outside the house. While that doesn’t include the aforementioned TV viewing, version 1.1.2 integrates remote DVR scheduling (previously left to the company’s Mobile Connect phone apps) and allows access to the app and recently updated grid guide when the user is away from home. You’ll still need to have the proper TV and internet packages from Cox to make it all go, but there’s no additional charge for the app that’s available at the source link below.

World’s oldest color film footage discovered in museum archive (video)

oldest color film footage

Cached away for over a century, the world’s first color moving pictures have been shown for the first time yesterday, according to the National Media Museum in the UK. The celluloid, shot by inventor Edward Raymond Turner in 1899, was actually in black and white and it was only through a curator’s research that its colorful significance was also unearthed.

When the footage was first shot, each frame was run consecutively through red, green or blue gels, and the process needed to be reversed during projection to reveal the color. Fortunately, a blueprint by the inventor of how to do just that was also found, allowing the institution’s team to replicate the process digitally to produce the final footage.

This type of color gel processing didn’t take off in the early 20th century due to the mechanical complexity, and it would have been inferior to a chemical process since each frame carried only one-third of the full color information. Still, it required a clever mind to dream it up, with an equally big brain to uncover it and finally give Turner his due. See the video below the break for the stunning un-retouched, non-hand-colored results.
