FiOS TV app for Samsung HDTVs and Blu-ray players available with 26 live channels (video)

FiOS TV app for Samsung HDTVs and Bluray players available with 26 live channels video

While we saw cable and IPTV providers promising pay-TV channels without a box (at least in that room) at CES 2012 we were skeptical, since we’ve been burned before, but now Verizon FiOS TV has followed up the launch of its app on Xbox 360 by quietly releasing the version for Samsung’s Smart TVs and Blu-ray players. Like the Xbox 360 app of course, you will need to already be a Verizon FiOS TV customer, so if it’s not in your area you’re still out of luck. One of our readers noticed the app pop up on his 2011 model Samsung HDTV, and Verizon just posted a quick video trailer (embedded after the break) previewing the app’s ability to tune into 26 live channels, as well as FlexView video on-demand content. Tipster ProphetBeal noted the channel changes seemed quicker than on the Xbox 360 app, although they were otherwise very similar. There’s a few more screens awaiting you at the source link, as well as a list of compatible devices.

[Thanks, ProphetBeal]

Engadget HD Podcast 310 – 08.02.2012

Engadget HD Podcast 296 - 04.25.2012Since everyone loves (to hate) NBC’s tape-delayed Olympics coverage we decided to push this latest episode of the podcast back a couple of days. Naturally the action from London and all of the discussion around the way it’s being broadcast leads things off, but there is other news this week. Super Hi-Vision has had its public debut, Google Fiber TV is happening and Amazon’s video is on the iPad. The only bad news? We won’t have a new show next week as we take one week off, and we’re still not ready to roll out those EHD Fantasy Football league invites again just yet. Until then, you’ve already waited long enough for this one, go ahead and press play.

Rovi lands Google Fiber patent license deal, keeps program guides flowing

Rovi strikes Google Fiber patent license deal, keeps program guides flowing

Rovi considers itself the master of TV program guides everywhere — even if some disagree — so it’s almost inevitable that the company would negotiate a new patent license with Google. The deal puts all of Google Fiber’s TV interfaces in the clear, whether it’s the set-top box near the TV or the less traditional interfaces found on the web and the Nexus 7 remote. Considering Rovi’s existing connection to Google TV, the new pact may cement the company and its partner in Mountain View as surprisingly close friends.

Time Warner Cable lost 169,000 subscribers, spares DirecTV’s blushes

Time Warner Cable lost 169,000 subscribers, spares DirecTVs blushes

TWC pushed out its second quarter results, showing it’s following the trend of shedding customers without hurting the bottom line. It took in $5.4 billion in revenue for the three month period — with more cash coming from selling higher tiers of service to existing users — leaving it with a net profit of $452 million. The company reported that it lost 169,000 residential video subscribers but gained 104,000 back across its high-speed data and voice businesses, which it described as “organic decline,” but looks more like cord-cutting to us.

DirecTV waves goodbye to 52,000 subscribers in first ever net loss of customers

DirecTV lost 52,000 subscribers in first ever quarterly customer loss

Viacom’s frenemy, DirecTV, has announced that it suffered a net loss of subscribers for the first time in its history. The revelation came in its second quarter filing, which claimed that the exodus is actually a purge — due to a tighter credit policy and a change of focus toward “higher quality” customers. The dip in numbers hasn’t hurt the balance sheet, however, with revenues up seven percent to $5.65 billion, leading to a net profit of $604 million. This time out, there’s no reference to the recently-minted deal to keep Viacom’s stations on the service, believed to be in the region of $600 million per year — but we expect it to appear on the books in the next quarterly report.

Aperion Audio Intimus 4T Summit touts uncompressed surround sound without the cords

Aperion Audio Intimus 4T Summit touts uncompressed 51channel audio without the cords

See that little box next to those huge speakers? That’s Aperion Audio’s ticket to what’s reportedly a no-compromise approach to wireless home theater. The Intimus 4T Summit Wireless is billed as the only system of its kind to transmit uncompressed 24-bit, 96KHz audio to its 5.1- or 7.1-channel speaker array without having to string wires across the living room. There’s no interference and no more than 5ms of lag, even when that wunderkind box is processing Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio. Aperion is still touting an easy setup that can create a sweet spot in awkward spaces. If you like the idea, the only real catches are the $2,999 and $3,499 prices for the respective 5.1- and 7.1-channel systems — although the outlay may be worthwhile to cut the clutter without sacrificing the finer details of Blu-ray movie soundtracks.

Netflix testing ‘Max’ assistant on some PS3 users to improve movie recommendations

Netflix testing 'Max' assistant on some PS3 users to improve movie recommendations

It’s not available to all, but if you’re running the latest version (2.08) of the Netflix app on your PlayStation 3 you may see a prompt for a new item called Netflix Max, spotted by one of our readers. Described by a PR rep we contacted as a “new user experience” the company is testing, the assistant talks to users directly and asks them to rate a few movies on the spot before providing new suggestions. The Noisecast was among the first to try out the new experience and even has a few tips on how to get it for yourself, although it didn’t work on our PS3, even after uninstalling and reinstalling the app to get the latest version. The blog mentioned it does more than simply rating movies also, as it sometimes asked users to select movies based on specific criteria, like the starring actors. It can be brought up by pressing the square button on your PS3 controller, although how much you enjoy the gameified experience may vary.

Pulling gems out of a catalog filled with older and lower profile movies is a complaint of many Netflix subscribers though, so any attempt to help is welcome, but we’re not immediately sure this is the way. According to Netflix, it’s waiting to see if the tool leads to “increased interaction” (read: more viewing hours / less likely to cancel, on average) before deciding whether or not to roll the tool out widely, so if you have it and like it, vote with your remotes.

[Thanks, Sean aka Prophet Beal]

Star Trek: TNG S1 Blu-ray set has an audio flaw, free replacements are available

Soon after the Star Trek: The Next Generation Season One Blu-ray set launched last week reports came in that there was an audio problem with the surround sound, and now CBS and Paramount have responded. According to a statement (included after the break) the problem is isolated to the English 7.1 DTS Master Audio track on some episodes where the front channels are mapped incorrectly. If you own the set, you can email (phe.stng@bydeluxe.com) or call (877-335-8936 between 8AM and 6PM PT) for replacements of Discs 1, 3 and 4, simply have your set nearby and ready to read the code located on the inner ring. You won’t need to send in your discs, and the replacements are expected to ship after August 10th and take up to five days to arrive.

Fanhattan updates iOS app with WatchList feature, content from Cinemax, HBO and NBC

Fanhattan’s often been praised for offering a one-stop hub where folks can keep track of all their cherished entertainment shows, which has led it to become a crowd favorite amongst iOS users. Well, today the application’s expanding its TV guide services a little more, announcing it’s now showing content from 10 new providers, including HBO, Cinemax, NBC and, better yet, The CW — you know, because we just can’t miss out on the latest Gossip Girl episodes. In addition to these channel inclusions, Fanhattan’s also introduced a novel, Amazon-esque WatchList feature that pushes out alerts as soon as added shows (movies, too) are ready to be watched. If you’ve yet to give the handy application a try, you can do so now by grabbing it at no cost from Cupertino’s well-known app mart.

Pandora channel gets refresh, version 3.0 arrives on Roku

Pandora channel gets refresh, version 30 arrives on Roku

Pandora’s music-sharing channel on Roku has been spruced up with a new station screen design and a few minor (but welcome) new features. Version 3.0 adds genre station functionality within a new grid interface, while the whole family (or at least up to five of them) can now connect their Pandora accounts to the same Roku hardware. For extended play, a new screen saver will display track details alongside album art and the renovated search will also display those album covers in results. Roku owners can expect their channel to auto-update in the next 48 hours, but anyone who hasn’t yet sampled the delights of Pandora can pick up the free download from the streaming box’s channel store.
