Miramax arrives on Lovefilm to let you relive the golden age of Weinsteins

Miramax arrives on Lovefilm to let you relive the golden age of Weinsteins

Miramax has reached a deal with Lovefilm to get its back-catalog of award-winning films available on-demand in the UK and Germany. It’s an unsurprising move given the company has similar deals in place with Netflix and Hulu to let you watch classics like Pulp Fiction, Clerks and Trainspotting whenever the urge takes you. While there was no official confirmation of a launch window, a cursory check of our own account reveals that some of the titles (including Kill Bill) are already popping up on the instant service.

Must See HDTV (July 31st – August 5th)

Must See HDTV July 31st August 5th

London 2012 Olympics
If TV broadcast tape delay and streaming restricted to pay-TV subscribers isn’t entirely ruining your experience, the first week of the 2012 Games has started off with a bang. There’s plenty of sporting action to go around and the world records have already started falling. Live coverage is early in the day for US time zones, while NBC is keeping some of the more anticipated events off TV and only online until its prime time airing later.

For viewers we have a few tips, like using Google to search Olympics + [sport] to get a minute by minute schedule of the events in your local time so you don’t miss ’em on the live stream. Also, check your cable or satellite provider, most have expanded options to help you catch all the sports, while Cox and DirecTV are doing the multiview thing, Comcast has added Olympics specifics filters to its remote apps, and Time Warner Cable has added more channels to its streaming iPad app.
(All week, NBC channels and online)

Total Recall (Mind-Bending Edition)
The Paul Verhoeven / Arnold Schwarzenegger classic is back on Blu-ray and should be better looking this time around. So, why opt for this one instead of a ticket to the remake this weekend? Beyond the obvious reasons, it’s also cheaper, currently listed at $7.99 on Amazon.
($7.99 on Amazon)

NFL Preseason
It’s finally time for football again, and while it’s just preseason action, we’ll be ready to see the Saints take on the Cardinals Sunday night from Canton Ohio. Also worth checking out, the HOF induction ceremony Saturday night as DB Jack Butler, C Dermontti Dawson, DE Chris Doleman, DT Cortez Kennedy, RB Curtis Martin and T Willie Roaf take their place among the other all-time greats.
(August 5th, NFL Network, 8PM)

E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial Blu-ray release date set for October 9th

ET The ExtraTerrestrial Bluray release date set for October 9th

Universal has finally revealed a release date for Steven Spielberg’s classic E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial on Blu-ray, which will hit shelves October 9th. In line with the box art and trailer we saw previously this Anniversary Edition Combo pack will include Ultraviolet, a DVD and Digital Copy of the flick, as well as a slew of extras including a new interview with Spielberg, behind the scenes journals, and deleted scenes from the 2002 release of the film. Curiously there’s no mention of the Spaceship Limited Edition copy that Blu-ray.com notes recently popped up on Amazon, check out a video of the case for that $139.98 package after the break as well as a standard Blu-ray movie trailer and press release. Those willing to settle for a more conventional form of packaging can pre-order on Amazon for $23.99.

Virgin Media coats millionth TiVo in Gold (Gold!), always believed in your soul

Virgin Media coats millionth TiVo in Gold Gold!, hires Martin Kemp to always believe in your soul

Companies might not be able to mention that big sporting event, but that doesn’t stop them from being clever. Virgin Media UK is one such enterprise, which decided to award its millionth TiVo customer with a gold medal in the form of a similarly-colored TiVo box. Rather than risk the ire of the IOC’s lawyers, the company used the moment to (perhaps sarcastically) celebrate the release of Spandau Ballet’s Gold. Bundling bassist-turned-soap-star Martin Kemp into a van, he turned up at the door of customers Allan and Christine Ward with the glistening PVR and a 3D-ready TV to surprise the couple. We don’t know if he told the husband and wife from Nottinghamshire that the HDTV market is like a high prison wall, but we hope the gift of a new home entertainment system leaves them standing so tallllllllllll…

Must See HDTV (July 23rd – 29th)

2012 London Summer Olympics
The Summer Olympics kick off this week in London, and you’ll want to have your TV, computer and mobile devices at the ready. This time around NBC has made the laudable step of promising every sport will be available for streaming live on the internet, however the Opening Ceremony TV broadcast on Friday will be tape delayed until the evening. Hit the NBCOlympics.com site to sign in with your pay-TV account for streaming access and grab the necessary apps, as well as see full listings for every sport, the action will actually get started on Wednesday with a slew of soccer matches, so make sure you don’t miss anything.
(All Week, NBC & Online)

Star Trek: The Next Generation Season One
The full remastered first season of Star Trek: The Next Generation debuts on Blu-ray this week, and as we’ve seen from the clips and teaser release earlier this year, the quality is top notch. Whether or not the first season of adventures with Picard, Riker, Worf, LaForge and company is worth buying is your decision, although the current Amazon price of $60 for the six-disc set doesn’t seem terribly prohibitive.
($59.99 on Amazon)

Alphas
Last week we said goodbye to one excellent sci fi series in Eureka, and this week one of our new favorites Alphas comes back on the air. An X-Men-style drama focusing on people granted with super abilities of various types teaming up to take on evil doers the plot is familiar but managed to mix things up a little during the first season, we’ll see if season two can keep the excitement going.
(July 23rd, Syfy, 10PM)

Plex Android app updated with remote control from mobile devices, new transcoding

Plex Android app updated with remote control from mobile devices, new transcoding

While it was exciting to hear that XBMC is making its way to Android, the Plex media center has been on the platform since last year and was recently updated with a few new features. Version 2.2.0.5 of the $5 app adds the ability to accept remote control commands from any of the company’s other mobile clients, so if your phone or tablet is dangling from the TV, you can still control playback or browse media without getting up. Also new is the “QuickSilver” media transcoder from the latest Plex Media Server release which we’re assured we will hear more about in the future, it’s currently expected to provide improved video quality, particularly on the Kindle Fire. Since the feature is still experimental you’ll have to specifically enable it in the settings menu, hit the official blog for more details on how to get it running, the full changelog and newly expanded list of devices that support HTTP Live Streaming.

Yahoo shows off Beyond Gold Olympics app for its connected HDTVs

Yahoo show off Beyond Gold Olympics app for its connected HDTVs

While NBC has already shown off its official Olympics apps for mobile devices, Yahoo is readying an onscreen companion app for connected TVs built on its widgets. While smart TV platforms and boxes are practically everywhere, Yahoo’s is built into HDTVs from several manufacturers, and the app is available for TVs from Sony, Vizio, Samsung and Toshiba. It gives users access to Yahoo Sports coverage with video, news and analysis including daily updates on the games and a real-time medal count. If you have a TV with the Yahoo Connected TV store, it should be just a few clicks of the remote away, and content updates are scheduled to start coming in early next week. We’re still waiting to see the second screen action we previewed at CES put to use, but maybe this event is just the reminder the world needed that this is on more TVs than Google’s effort and actually exists unlike the often-rumored Apple HDTV.

Marvel’s Cinematic Universe Blu-ray set gets its own trailer (video)

If you didn’t head down to Comic-Con and check out the Marvel Cinematic Universe Blu-ray boxed set and its special case for yourself, Marvel has put together a video trailer. From the S.H.I.E.L.D. briefcase itself to the custom artwork and tesseract replica awaiting within. Usually, trailers are reserved for movies themselves, and not just the packaging, but maybe this is worth the exception. Check out the video and let us know if you’re convinced, or if some combination of the $140 price and The Dark Knight Rises arriving in theaters makes it a pass.

Star Trek: The Next Generation Comic-Con trailer tries to make season one (and two) look exciting (video)

Star Trek The Next Generation ComicCon trailer tries to make seasons one and two look exciting video

Undecided about buying the first season (or two) of the remastered Star Trek: The Next Generation? We understand, but perhaps this pair of trailers will change your mind. The increase in quality is obvious to see, with the recomposed special effects and 7.1 DTS HD even offsetting the pain of re-watching episodes like Shades of Gray and Haven. The second set also includes a reunion talk, interesting just to see how much the stars of the show have changed in the intervening two-and-a-half-decades. You can watch both after the break, but if you decide to hold off until season three, we won’t tell anyone.
