It’s been a awhile since we caught up with Peel, but the company has certainly been putting its time to good use with a big update to its Android app at Google I/O. A new AllPlay TV component acts primarily as a companion for Google TV, pooling together listings of the disparate sources of conventional and streaming TV without having to break out the awkward remote until absolutely necessary. Live TV, DVR recordings and Netflix all sit side by side; if the season premiere of a show is coming up and last season’s finale remains tragically unwatched, Peel will be the cue to record the new airing and hit Netflix for the catch-up. Peel warns that AllPlay TV won’t be part and parcel of the app until July — as compensation, it’s promising that the release will bring Android 2.3 users into the fold, and a parallel version is coming to iPhone and iPod touch owners in the next few months.

While still a far cry from 64 speakers, Onkyo and DTS teamed up to bring the first 11.4 channel surround sound to your home theater. At the top of the trio of new receivers is the TX-NR5010. It is the only one that’s THX certified, but like the TX-NR3010, it can drive 9 speakers and has pre-outs for four subs as well as two more channels. $2999 is the price you’ll pay for the best, with a $700 price break when you move one model down the line to the TX-NR3010. Last up, but still shipping in July with 11.4 support, is the TX-NR1010 with its seven channel amp at $1799. DTS Neo:X is the name of the up-mix technology that uses a single algorithm to take anything from a 2.0 signal to 11.1 and converts it to 11.4. The other first here is Cisco Linksys SimpleTap — also coming to the entire 2012 Onkyo lineup of network receivers via a firmware update — which promises to deliver a simpler network setup. Verizon launched its fiber to the home service the same year CableCARD was released, but Verizon’s implementation has always been a little different. For starters, Verizon got an extra year before it was required to support it, but even since then, Verizon has been pretty lax about enforcing all the restrictions CableCARD has to offer. Despite years of predictions about the sky falling one day, only now have a few FiOS customers received letters notifying them that the party’s over. What we mean is that starting July 31st, you won’t be able to just slide an activated CableCARD into another box, like you can now.

The real bad news however, is that some premium content will now be flagged Copy Once. Although the FCC has always permitted the use of this flag on most content, Verizon has never used it. Essentially that meant that you could record anything you wanted on your TiVo or Windows Media Center PC and copy those programs any which way you’d like. Not only does this break TiVoToGo and other similar features, but it actually breaks Multi-Room Viewing on the Series3. CableCARD FiOS TV customers can tune to channel 131 to see if their TV will turn dark on D-Day (the screenshot above means you’ll need to update your activation to continue viewing) but until then, enjoy the free for all copying while it lasts.

If you’re reading this, then you’re probably always looking ahead at what technology might bring next. Tomorrow at 10AM ET, US Congress members of the Subcommittee on Communications and Technology will be doing that too. The specific segment of the market being discussed is video and on the docket to testify is a who’s who of the video business. The old guard, NCTA and the MPAA, is being represented by Michael Power — yes, the previous Chairman of the FCC — and Michael O’Leary, respectively. On the other side are representatives from Dish Network, Sky Angel, Netflix, Roku and Public Knowledge. So yeah, this could get interesting. The NCTA has already starting posturing on its blog, Cable Tech Talk, with a post highlighting all the wonderful changes in the video distribution industry in the past 20 years — however, curiously, the upwardly creeping price of the average bill wasn’t mentioned. Of course a subcommittee hearing is just the first of a very long process towards real change, and while we’d be shocked if any of our ideas are implemented anytime soon, it’s good to see some movement in Washington on a topic we care about.

Louie
Comedian Louis CK’s offbeat comedy show returns to FX this week for its third season, and while it’s not distributed via a PayPal-supported downloadable honor system, we’ll watch anyway. The show’s been among the funniest selections out there for the last few seasons and we expect it to remain there. The only difference is the packed lineup FX has arranged around it, with fellow returnee Wilfred and new series premieres from Charlie Sheen in Anger Management and Brand X with Russell Brand.

Nancy Botwin is back (?). After the up and down last few seasons, that statement isn’t at interesting as it used to be, but after the cliffhanger finale, we’ll tune in to at least see what’s going on. Drugs are bad, kids, mmmkay?
