Netflix Available on Boxee Box at Long Last

d-link-boxee-box.jpgTo show its love on this special Valentine’s Day, Boxee Box announced it will now allow Netflix streaming in the US and Canada. Boxee dealt with some delays — Netflix was supposed to be available to the Boxee Box by the end of 2010, and then it was supposed to be available in January –, but Boxee Box owners can finally breath a sigh of relief.

In an e-mail from Boxee, the company said it was bummed it couldn’t get it out sooner, but that it’s “happy to have the Netflix app just in time for Valentine’s Day so our users can have a date night with their Boxee Box (and hopefully a significant other).”

The user interface of the new Netflix app is the same as the one recently released for Google TV and Sony’s PlayStation 3. It allows users to search and browse the entire catalog.

Automatic firmware updates will roll-out later this week, but owners can force the download now by updating the firmware manually.

[Update: The Netflix service will cost $7.99 a month.]

Keith Olbermann Moves to Current TV

kolbermann_cornell.png
A few weeks after making an abrupt departure from MSNBC, left-leaning commentator Keith Olbermann has a new home: Current TV. The channel, launched five years ago as a forwarding thinking station targeted toward the 18-34 demographic, has struggled for viewers, currently pulling in around 23,000 viewers in its prime time slot, despite being available in 60 million homes.
Olbermann, for his part, was pulling in around one million viewers, when he announced his departure and then promptly exited MSNBC. Neither the station nor Olbermann have given reason for his departure–though it did come shortly after he was briefly suspended from the station for making campaign donations in the last midterms.
Current is no doubt best know for two things: being founded by former Vice President Al Goe and the detention of two of its reporters in North Korea, back in 2009.

HD Aspect Radio Catches Newscaster Flipping the Bird

news caster middle finger.JPG

The most widely-publicized side effect of HD on newscasters is the ability to pick up the manner of subtle facial blemishes that would have otherwise been lost in lower definition broadcasts. Another concern, the wider aspect ratio that comes with HD broadcasts and new TV sets, however, apparently caught KPRC anchor Owen Conflenti by surprise.
All the poor reporter wanted to do was flip someone the bird off camera, and sadly the who thing was caught for the greater Houston audience–and YouTube–to see. The gesture occurred around 9:20 AM, as the station was coming back from a commercial break.
The station is officially issuing a “no comment” on the footage. Conflenti issued a similar, “As you probably assumed, I can’t comment.” The reporter does appear to still be with the station, however. KPRC sent him to Dallas to cover the Super Bowl.
For those who can’t stomach a quick middle finer will want to skip the video after the jump.

In Celebration of the Bezel

appleii bezel.jpg

During its press conference at this year’s CES, Samsung made little bones about its vendetta against the bezel. The company bragged about how its forthcoming D8000 HDTV has virtually no border, going so far as removing a fake bezel from the top of the television and then holding a pencil to the set’s side, to show just how razor thin the actually bezel is.

Of course, Samsung’s not alone in its battle against the bezel. It’s one of countless consumer electronics companies racing to do away with the bezel on everything from computer monitors to MP3 players. And why not? The bezel has long been regarded as waste of real estate–part of a device that would be better utilized by making the screen larger.
There’s no love for the bezel. But the bezel ensures that your screen doesn’t fall off. Seeing as how the bezel may soon be as a past, it seems an appropriate time to celebrate the unsung hero of the consumer electronics world.

The Best Gadgets for Your Super Bowl XLV Party

Thumbnail image for universal-football-remote.jpg
It’s nearly time for the big game. You’ve got your HDTV, your 5.1 speaker system, and you’ve bought out half the snack food section down at the local Safeway. Think you’re ready for Super Bowl XLV? Think again. From dual functioning remote controls, to clever coolers, to overachieving grills, we’ve got everything you need to enjoy the game–no matter who wins on Sunday.
What’s that? Your sofa doesn’t have ambient-light-detecting cup holders? And you call yourself a football fan?

Zuckerberg, Eisenberg Appear on SNL

Also, Samberg. That last one’s not really that weird, though–he’s actually on the show. You’ve got to hand it to Mark Zuckerberg, he’s a pretty good sport, appearing on this weekend’s Saturday Night Live, alongside Jesse Eisenberg, who played a decidedly unflattering–but Academy Award nominated–version of the kid billionaire in last year’s The Social Network.

Samberg and Eisenberg both showed off their versions of the Facebook founder. Eisenberg: “I speak in short, clipped sentences and keep my head very still.” Samberg: “I wear this sweatshirt.” Zuckerberg joined the two on stage for an encounter Samberg (on script) called, “Awkberg.”

And yes, yes it was. For all of us. It wasn’t one of those “hey, look what they did” monologues, not one of the especially hilarious variety. Zuckerberg, let’s be honest, has the acting chops and comedic timing of fellow billionaire Steve Forbes. But that’s not the point. The point is, the guy’s a good sport. Also, he invented poking.

NBC Drops Peacock From Corporate Logo

nbcuniversal.jpg

There are often a few casualities of sorts during times of corporate change–takeovers, mergers and the like. Some parties just don’t make it out of the proceedings unscathed. NBC’s purchase by Comcast is no different. The company is losing a bird–and Universal is losing the world.

NBC Universal (space) held a town hall meeting yesterday to inform its 25,000 employees that the company will be henceforth known as NBCUniversal (no space). And the famous peacock and the Universal globe are gone from the corporate logo.

Don’t feel too sorry for the bird, however. NBC the broadcaster will retain the peacock, and Universal still gets to keep the globe for its studio and theme parks. And really, the whole spaceless NBCUniversal thing is logo-only. There’s still a space, technically, but you know, it’s all about unity.

We’ll leave the rest of the explanation to the disembodied voice in the promo shown to employees, “We aren’t a family of two favorite sons, rather one filled with talented people and companies all tied for first.”

British Mayor Barred from “Piranha” Rental Over 3D Health Issues

piranha.jpg

Keith Sharp is the 55-year-old mayor of a city in eastern England. He’s been a health adviser for the past decade and a half. He’s spent $3,000 on a 3D HD TV and $175 on 3D glasses. All the guy wanted to do was rent a copy of Piranha 3D and spend a quiet, bloodsplattered night at home.

An employee at the local Blockbuster video thought otherwise, telling Sharp that he couldn’t rent the film. The ailing movie rental chain has a policy against renting out 3D, offer hygiene concerns. Apparently the policy was misinterpreted by an employee, who thought it extended to 3D films (why the store would carry a bunch of movies it couldn’t rent is beyond us, of course), barring Sharp from going home with the comedy-horror flick.

“It’s absolutely stupid,” Sharp said, apparently distraught by the whole run in. “It’s one of those over-the-top health and safety issues I’m sick and tired of. Things like renting a DVD should be common sense. I’ve come across idiotic health and safety people in my time, and this is up there with the worst of them.”

Blockbuster apologized for the apparent mix up, telling the press, “Staff have been trained on our strategy-but unfortunately, in this case, they provided the wrong information to the customer.”

Cambridge Unveils the iD100 iPhone and iPad Dock

Cambridge iD100

CES 2011 may be over, but the product releases are still going strong, with new products slated to hit the market later in the year making their appearances. Among them is the new Cambridge iD100 iPhone and iPad Dock, which Cambridge can “transform the iPad into a true audiophile device.”
The iD100 is a docking station that will support the iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch when it’s released later this spring, and is designed to provide clear audio and video out from your device to your home theater or HDTV.
The iD100 will feature S/P-DIF outputs, optical audio, and digital audio outputs, and component, composite, and S-video video outputs on the back, as well as and IR input for remote controls and a USB port to sync your docked iOS device with your PC or Mac. When it’s available, Cambridge says it will retail for $279.

Shop Manager Tracks Down Robber, Friends Him on Facebook

car wash sign.jpg

How do you get a stolen flat screen TV out of a car wash? Simple–hide it under your shirt. That’s apparently exactly what a robber didn’t after pulling a 27-inch TV off the wall of the Prestige Car Wash and Gas Station men’s bathroom.

That’s not even the weird part of the story–that came latter.

No one actually caught the man in the act, but the car wash’s manager Nicole Telles reviewed surveillance tape to find that the man who committed the crime had paid with a credit card just before (literally) ripping the business off.

Telles got his name from the car and, naturally, added him on Facebook. “He accepted me, so I went through all his pictures, made sure it was him.” Telles’s boss then sent the man a note, saying that, if he returned the TV, the car wash wouldn’t call the police.

“He ended up deleting me, so then we thought to ourselves that the kid doesn’t want to give it up,” she added. Eventually Telles and her boss turned the evidence over to the cops, who promptly arrested the suspect.
