Samsung Smart TV with Google TV on display at IFA 2012, ships ‘later this year’ (update: hands-on)

Samsung Smart TV with Google TV on display at IFA 2012, ships 'later this year'

It wasn’t a part of Samsung’s IFA 2012 press conference, but Samsung is showing off Google TV hardware for the first time since CES 2011 (pictured above), and will release a Smart TV with Google TV later this year. According to its press release and a blog post by the Google TV team, it will “enhance the Smart TV experience” with premium content from its Samsung Apps services. How exactly it will be merged we should see soon, but now that ARM chips are powering a cheaper, more conventionally built experience we figure whatever hung up the deal has been squashed. We should get an eye on it if it’s anywhere on the show floor soon, as well as the Google TV box from Hisense, and Sony’s NSZ-GS7 which already launched in the US and UK, but is coming to Germany, France and the Netherlands soon.

Update: We caught up with working hardware at Samsung’s booth, but the device was disconnected from the internet, so we weren’t able to take it for a proper spin. You can take a somewhat superficial look in our hands-on gallery below, along with the video after the break.

Toshiba 84-inch 4K Quad Full HD TV hands-on (video)

Toshiba 84inch 4K Quad Full HD TV handson video

84 seems to be the magic number at IFA. 84 inches, that is, when it comes to 4K TVs. Sony announced its jumbo 4K set at yesterday’s press conference, and now Toshiba has returned with a matching high-res model of its own. The Toshiba set has a slightly sleeker housing, aided by the fact that it didn’t have side-mounted speakers as with Sony’s flavor — though, if you’re able to afford a (yet-unpriced) TV of this caliber, a premium surround-sound rig better be on the agenda as well. The picture quality, as you might expect, was fantastic. You’ll see individual pixels once you’re within a few feet of the display, but given its 84-inch footprint, you’re going to want to position yourself quite a distance from the panel in order to take it all in.

Toshiba had three sets on display, running through loops of game play, cityscapes and some decked-out human models. The ambient setting was favorably configured, and with ideal content colors were vibrant and the picture was incredibly bright and sharp during our demo, even when viewed from a slight angle. There was a hint of reflection, but only when a dark image popped into frame, despite a multitude of visual noise in the area. You’ll need to see Toshiba’s 84-inch, 3,840 x 2,160-pixel TV in person to get the full effect (perhaps after it launches early next year), though you can take a (low-res) peek in our gallery below and the video after the break. You can also get a feel for the size — keep an eye out for the Galaxy Note in the bottom left corner in the shot above.

Sony XBR-84X900 TV brings 4K resolution to 84-inch image

We’ve heard that Sony was going to announce a 84″ TV at IFA, but things just became official this morning when Sony’s CEO officially unveiled the Sony XBR-84X900 HDTV. With a resolution of 3840 x 2160 (4K), the Sony XBR-84X900 certainly looks amazing.

It is not designed to be super-thin or particularly “edgy” in terms of industrial design (although it is nice). At this point, the Sony XBR-4K about delivering the best visual and audio experience possible in a large TV form-factor. For folks who already own their audio equipment, the side speakers are detachable to make the TV look slimmer. It’s a nice touch because although no price has been announced it’s fair to imagine that those who can afford it, will probably have the means to get the best audio as well.

Now, the real question is where will the content come from? As you can imagine, Sony is jumping early in the 4K game because it thinks it has an edge when it comes to content. Sony is currently producing a lot of professional equipment used in Hollywood to film 4K movies, and its own studios will undoubtedly provide the first content. Secondly, there are reasonable ways to upscale content – even if that’s not as good as native 4K content.

I personally think that 4K is much more interesting than 3D, especially for large displays. what’s your take?

Sony unveils latest HX950 flagship HDTV in Japan with 'Intelligent Peak LED' backlighting

While Sony’s current lineup of HDTVs has so far topped out with the HX929/920 series that’s been kicking around since 2011, in Japan it has just unveiled a new top of the line model: the HX950. Often rumored in the last few months, it’s available in 65- or 55-inch varieties and features Sony’s now-trademark monolithic style as well as “Intelligent Peak LED” backlighting. Although Sony’s brand name for the tech doesn’t exactly reveal how it works, information leaks have suggested it is full array LED backlighting and not edge based, although we don’t know how many zones (individually controlled light sources) are in play. What we do know, however is that it claims to outperform the LED backlighting in the old 929 quite handily, although we’ll let our eyes be the judge of that.

It also includes MotionFlow XR960 (800 in the US) motion processing tech that can create 240fps from 60 frames and a glass panel mounted to the LCD itself with a special type of resin designed specifically to reduce glare. Finally, there’s also the usual add-ins like 3D and Sony Entertainment Network streaming video. We haven’t seen any European or US information for this model yet, although with IFA 2012 under way and CEDIA coming up that may change quickly. Currently pricing in Japan for the 65-inch is expected to be around 650,000 yen or $8,269 when it ships November 10th, but we should mention actual US prices are typically much lower than a direct conversion. Unofficially, one retailer is already listing the 55- and 65-inch models for sale in the US for $3,499 and $5,499, respectively, although we’d take that with a grain of salt until we know for sure.

LG TM2792 Personal TV with CINEMA SCREEN Design makes IFA 2012 bow

Don’t you just hate it when you purchase a brand new TV, only to realize that has become obsolete by the time you unpacked and mounted in on your living room wall? The great irony about the situation is this – you got this piece of news that a spanking new TV has just been released to replace your model, watching it all from the glory of your new purchase. Well, I am quite sure that if you are one of the first few people in Europe who drop serious money for the LG TM2792 Personal TV with CINEMA SCREEN Design when it is released this September, you will not be able to run into such a situation.

Basically, the LG TM2792 Personal TV with CINEMA SCREEN Design is the company’s newest premier showcase that has made its debut at IFA 2012 in Berlin. It is said to be the “ultimate entertainment platform”, although I am not quite sure just how true that is. The LG TM2792 will allow you to enjoy a vast array of innovative features such as LG Smart TV functionality, CINEMA 3D and CINEMA SCREEN Design, ensuring your eyes will be able to dance all over the amazing picture quality delivered via IPS technology.

As for the hardware specifications (I leave the aesthetics to your judgment as you can see above), it will come with 27″ of viewing goodness at 1,920 x 1,080 resolution, in addition to a LED IPS (In Plane Switching)/3D display with 250 nits of brightness, sporting a wide 178-degree viewing angle, 5ms response time, and a pair of 7W speakers. In terms of connectivity, you end up with DLNA, Wi-Fi Direct and WiDi, D-Sub, two HDMI ports, composite, component, SCART, three USB ports to get you started, LAN support as well as two battery-free glasses which unsurprisingly, are also flicker-free.

Unfortunately for the masses, there is still no word on pricing details. I suppose this is one of those moments where if you actually need to ask, chances are you are not able to afford it. What do you think – what is the next quantum leap in TV technology?

LG TM2792 Personal TV packs WiDi, MHL and standalone web

LG has revealed its latest smart TV, the LG TM2792 Personal TV, a kitchen and bedroom scale set that doesn’t stint on display performance or media streaming abilities. Measuring in at 27-inches, the Full HD TV uses an LED IPS panel for better quality video and 250 nits brightness, with 3D support and integrated WiFi Direct, WiDi and DLNA for streaming directly from notebooks or other devices.

There’s also an MHL HDMI connection, allowing a phone or tablet to be easily hooked up for showing off whatever photos or videos you might have shot. Other connections include VGA, composite and component, along with SCART, three USB ports – which will support a keyboard and mouse, allowing the TM2792 to be used as a web-surfing interface without your PC turned on – and wired ethernet.

The panel itself is clad in a narrow metal bezel, and LG throws in its Magic Remote for navigating through the on-screen dashboard. That supports video-on-demand, LG Smart World apps and more; the TM2792 can also convert 2D to 3D and includes twin 7W speakers.

No word on pricing for the TM2792, but it will go on sale in September and we’ll find out more at IFA 2012 this coming week.
