Google Fiber TV package priced and detailed

This week Google’s Fiber ultra-fast web connection has been turned on in Kansas City, complete with a set of new hardware bits for users to make full use of it. One of these is the Google Fiber TV Box – this device connecting to the web, bringing you wifi connection, wired connection, and bluetooth as well. The Google Fiber Storage Box is a storage unit in which you’ll be able to keep TV shows, movies, and more – inside you’ve got Two terabytes of storage and the ability to record 500 hours of HD content. All of this is controlled from none other than the Google Nexus 7 tablet.

Google’s introduction of Fiber for Kansas City brings on the TV package that includes not just the two boxes listed above, but 1TB of Google Drive storage and a Network Box as well. You’ll also get all the major networks in one package, premium movie channels at an additional fee, and thousands of hours of content each month.

There’s one $300 construction fee, one time fee, and you’ve got a $120 a month cost. With a two-year contract you also have no construction fee at all. All of this will be live for Kansas City immediately if not soon – and once Google is ready to bring on Fiber to the whole USA, you’ll have it as well. Can’t wait!

Sceptre has a spanking new 50″ LCD HDTV for the masses

You can say that many of us love to own new pieces of consumer electronics whenever we can afford one. However, a lot of that depends on your bank balance, and Sceptre is definitely a name that allows you to own some of the better looking home consumer electronics without having to burst that bank account of yours. For those of you who are looking for a spanking new TV, here we are with Sceptre’s latest addition – the 50″ LCD HDTV that is said to offer a true 50” viewable area, in addition to surround sound and a slim and sleek design – which would make it the ideal centerpiece for just about any room.

Just like all the other Sceptre models which have been released in the past, this new 50″ LCD HDTV from Sceptre will come with its slew of features that are not commonly found in other HDTVs that are on the market. Among these features include SRS TruSurround HD, which is actually a technology that is capable of optimizing bass performance in order to create a vivid 3D sound experience. Apart from that, it will also come with multiple HDMI ports which makes sense in this day and age – where more and more devices come with HDMI connectivity. Apart from that, there is also a USB port that will let you easily view and access music and JPEG files, in addition to being able to swivel up to 30 degrees so that you can adjust it to any viewing angle, among others.

To make sure that your eyes are greeted by none other than crisp images, while your ears enjoy unparalled sound quality (at a budget price of course, we are not talking about audiophile level here), the Sceptre 50″ LCD HDTV was also specially designed to be as energy efficient as possible, resulting in long term cost savings for the consumer. I would say this makes plenty of sense, especially if the HDTV is your primary mode of entertainment in the living room. It does not matter if you use it to watch movies or play games on a console, the Sceptre 50″ LCD HDTV will get the job done just fine. It has an Energy Star rating that is estimated to cost you $21 each year – the lowest in its class, of course.

The asking price for 50″ of viewing goodness? We are looking at just $999.99 here – which isn’t much at all, don’t you think so?

LG Q2 2012 earnings show a loss on cellphones, but higher profits overall thanks to home theater

Image

LG has released its earnings statement for the Q2 2012 period, the claim of “turning a corner” in Q1 has just managed to hold up as it registered net profits of $138 million, up 46 percent from the same period last year. Revenues, while higher than Q1, were actually down from last year and blamed on declines in featurephone sales and slow sales of IT products. The mobile division also struggled after a strong Q1 and took an operating loss, however the positive takeaways are a rising percentage of smartphone shipments and plans to launch new LTE-connected models in North America (we’ve spotted the likely Spectrum 2 for Verizon already), Europe and Asia later this year. The good news for the home theater segment continued however, with an operating profit of more than double last year at $187.5 million despite slightly lower sales due to an increase in sales of premium products like its Cinema 3D HDTVs, which it expects to become the “top global seller” in the 3D segment. There’s more details in the press release after the break or PDF linked below if you need more numbers.

Yahoo shows off Beyond Gold Olympics app for its connected HDTVs

Yahoo show off Beyond Gold Olympics app for its connected HDTVs

While NBC has already shown off its official Olympics apps for mobile devices, Yahoo is readying an onscreen companion app for connected TVs built on its widgets. While smart TV platforms and boxes are practically everywhere, Yahoo’s is built into HDTVs from several manufacturers, and the app is available for TVs from Sony, Vizio, Samsung and Toshiba. It gives users access to Yahoo Sports coverage with video, news and analysis including daily updates on the games and a real-time medal count. If you have a TV with the Yahoo Connected TV store, it should be just a few clicks of the remote away, and content updates are scheduled to start coming in early next week. We’re still waiting to see the second screen action we previewed at CES put to use, but maybe this event is just the reminder the world needed that this is on more TVs than Google’s effort and actually exists unlike the often-rumored Apple HDTV.

LG’s 84-inch 4K TV on sale in Korea from August

If you’re not content with 1080p on your big screen TV, then fear not: manufacturers are starting to roll out their 4K TVs, though you’ll have to pay a small fortune to get your hands on one. LG will be selling its new 84-inch 3840×2160 TV in South Korea towards the end of August, and is currently taking pre-orders. The company will be showing off the television in stores across the country, but quantities of the set will be limited.

There will only be 84 of the TVs available to buy, though at ₩25 million (~$21,925) there probably won’t be many customers seeking them out. LG will be throwing in some extra goodies too, including a 2.2 speaker system, some 3D glasses, and a 3D camcorder valued at around ₩300,000 (~$263). LG will even hook the TV up for you for free: we should certainly hope so considering the gigantic size and price.

South Korea may be seeing the TV first, but LG is planning on bringing the set to other destinations around the world, including the United States, Europe, and Latin America. The company says it should arrive sometime in the second half of the year, so that should give you some time to figure out how to get your hands on some 4K content and save up the necessary money.

LG’s 84-inch 4K HDTV now on sale – limited quantities available

LG does seem serious on peddling their massive, massive 84-inch ultra-definition 4K HDTV that was first spotted at CES earlier this year. It boasts a stunning level of resolution – we are talking about 3,840 x 2,160 (UHDTV) pixels here, where it is capable of maintaining a full 1080p picture for 3D movies, and this happens even as you use the LG’s FPR Cinema 3D passive glasses technology. Not only that, this particular TV will come with a standard range of Smart TV features. Well, LG would by no means want to be left behind in Samsung’s wake, as the latter has just announced the 75-inch ES9000 that carries some Angry Birds goodness along with it.    One thing is for sure though – this bad boy is not going to come cheap by any means, so you might want to start saving up for one like since yesterday! LG 84-inch ‘ultra definition’ 4K HDTV going on sale in limited quantities in Korea

LG 84inch 'ultra definition' 4K HDTV goes on sale in limited quantities

It looks like LG is actually going to sell that sweet 84-inch ultra-definition TV we saw at CES. With a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 (UHDTV) it will maintain a full 1080p picture for 3D movies even with LG’s FPR Cinema 3D passive glasses technology, and also includes the standard suite of Smart TV features. Of course, the launch is quite predictable, considering there’s no way LG could let Korean rival Samsung rule the roost with its 75-inch ES9000 that’s on the way. While we’ll wait for an English language PR for all the details on the 84LM9600, native speakers can scrounge some won together and hit the source link below for more information.

Update: We’ve checked with LG and confirmed that this LCD has a price of 25 million won ($21,925 US) for anyone preordering the 84 units that will be on sale for the first month, and it has a 2.2 channel “3D sound” system. It’s only going to be available in Korea for now, so lining up outside your local big box store might be going a step or two too far, for now — that 4K content isn’t really available yet could be another reason.

Samsung 75-inch ES9000 smart TV makes stateside debut: on sale in August for $9,999

Samsung 75inch ES9000 smart TV makes stateside debut on sale in August for $9,999

The mammoth 75-inch ES9000 LED smart TV that Samsung recently unveiled for the Korean market is making its way stateside. Today the 3D-capable, LED-backlit set was on display in New York as part of the Sammy-sponsored SpaceFest marking the Space Shuttle Enterprise’s arrival at the Intrepid. How smart TVs relate to Space Shuttle orbiters is beyond us, but the ES9000’s US debut is welcome news for those with a massive living room to fill, and were disappointed after the ES8000 75-incher shown at CES and even given a price tag earlier this year failed to materialize.

Detailed specs are currently MIA, but as we noted before in our hands-on, the 75-incher’s bezel measures just 0.31 inches, and the frame sports a rose-gold finish. There’s also a built-in web camera that retracts when not in use, and the TV comes with four pairs of 3D glasses. Being a smart TV, this guy also includes the full suite of Smart TV features, such as Smart Interaction for enabling gesture and voice controls and Smart Content for sharing media across several devices. Samsung also used today’s occasion to introduce a new Angry Birds app for its smart TVs, which lets users play the game entirely with gesture controls. The app will be available for a free download later this month, and the ES9000 will go on sale in August for a super-sized price of $9.999. Check out the PR below for more info.

Samsung ES9000 75-inch HDTV unveiled for USA

It’s time for Samsung to take things up a notch with their newest, largest, and most expensive television yet in the ES9000 for the United States. This television brings in 75-inches of 3D HDTV – a beast so large that Samsung unveiled it onboard the U.S.S. Intrepid aircraft carrier. Samsung is ready for war, an entertainment in the home war, and they’ve brought on the monster to prove it.

The ES9000 comes with a selection of unique features, the first of them being the oddly colored bezel around its screen. The bezel is rose gold colored, believe it or not, not black, clear, or even metallic as all Samsung TVs have been in the past. There’s a camera up top that hides itself behind the display when not in use, is able to work with hand gestures and Skype as we saw in our recent review of a past model Samsung Smart TV (the ES8000), and voice controls are of course in play as well.

NOTE: We’ve had our own hands-on experience with this unit on the 4th of July of this year as well – take a peek!

This monster uses the company’s Micro Dimming Ultimate as well as Precision Black Local Dimming features which together create the “best” image Samsung TVs have yet brought forth. Samsung is saying that this model offers a massive 30 percent improvement in black levels as well as sharpness over the ES8000. The ES9000 is also said by Samsung to improve over the ES8000′s brightness by a whopping 60 percent!

You’ll find this massive piece of HD television glory in stores and shipping in August for just $9,999 USD – grab one!
