LG adds PayPal to its smart TV platform for faster app purchases

Looking to jumpstart interest in its in-house ecosystem, LG is adding PayPal as a software purchasing option for its latest line of smart TVs, making it the first manufacturer to natively use the service. Available now in the US, Canada and UK, this new addition will let you use either a traditional or Magic remote to navigate an onscreen keyboard when buying apps, games or $50 worth of 3D Disney movie rentals. The real potential time saver here is the addition of an optional “remember me” feature which lets users store their PayPal account information for faster purchases. Look for the service to expand to Australia, France, Germany and Italy sometime this month, with other markets set to follow later.

Samsung Display HQ searched by police in probe over stolen LG OLED tech

We had hoped that the dispute between Samsung and LG over their OLED tech would be resolved soon but recent developments suggest that may not be the case. Bloomberg reports Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency investigators entered the Samsung Display HQ in Asan as they look into the possibility that LG partners may have leaked secrets of its technology. A Samsung spokesperson denied any involvement, and an LG spokesperson is quoted saying the police made the allegation themselves. This comes after Yonhap News reported last month that LG accused Samsung of illegally using its patented technology and demanded Samsung Display and Samsung Electronics pay for the rights. While these two continue to duke it out legally, we have yet to see an OLED HDTV from either arrive in the US and it seems like it may be quite some time until that happens.

Eye+ Delivers A Breathtaking View Regardless Of Room

Eye+ Delivers A Breathtaking View Regardless Of RoomWhether one likes it or not, those living in large cities, eking out a living, would stay in an apartment. Mind you, I am referring to “shoeboxes” in essence, and definitely not one of those posh penthouses. The thing is, regardless of how small your apartment is, having a decent view is definitely worth looking into, and it would also ultimately affect the selling or rental price. Don’t you wish that your view was better than the unit five doors down? If that is the case, then the Eye+ is just the thing for you.

The Eye+ is actually a HDTV that can be hung on a wall, where this 46” HDTV will be able to play back special scenic videos for you and the rest of your family or guests to enjoy. Located around the bezel are optical sensors which will keep track of just where you are in relation to the screen, so whenever you look out of the Eye+ “window,” the video will be smart enough to shift its perspective, depending on your relative position. Pretty neat, no? The sensors and built-in microphones can even be used for remote security purposes, now how about that?

LG and NCAA records the NCAA Final Four in 4K Ultra HD for the first time

LG, CBS Sports, Turner Sports, and the NCAA all worked together to record the NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four championship in 4K Ultra HD resolution. This is the first time that a major U.S. sporting event has ever been recorded in 4K, and it’s a start of more 4K programming to come. James Fishler, Senior VP of marketing for LG Electronics USA, stated, “After being the first to market with Ultra HD TVs, it only seems fitting that we’d be a part of the first major U.S. sporting event produced in 4k.”

The 4K recording was displayed on LG’s 84-inch 4K Ultra HD TVs at various, private locations inside of the Georgia Dome. The premiere of the NCAA Men’s Final Four championship in 4K also coincided with the 75th anniversary celebration of March Madness, making it the perfect time to start broadcasting the sporting event in the next-generation of HDTV. Ken Aagaard, Executive VP of operations, engineering and broadcast services for CBS Sports, states that Ultra HDTV can become the future of sports broadcasting.

LG’s 84-inch 4K Ultra HD TVs sell for $19,999. It brings 4 times the details of a Full HD 1080p display, shelling out a 3,840 x 2,160 resolution. It features the LG Resolution Upscaler Plus which boosts lower-resolution content into higher detail. It also comes with an LG Magic Remote which allows you to navigate through LG’s HD TV onscreen interface with gestures and voice search. It has a 2.2 Sound System that brings ultra-quality sound to your ultra-quality television.

LG has some big competition coming from Sony. Just yesterday, Sony released the pricing for its 55-inch and 65-inch 4K Ultra HD TVs, both of which will be available on April 21st. The 55-inch will sell for $4,999 and the 65-inch will sell for $6,999, making them both much more affordable than LG’s current offering. Sony will also be bringing a 4K media player in the future, and it will launch a 4K video distribution service as well in order to jet-start the 4K era.

Sony FMP-X1 4K Media Player coming over the summer

Sony has just announced the pricing and release date for its 55-inch and 65-inch 4K Ultra HD LED TVs, however, to completely take advantage of the TVs’ beautiful displays, you’re going to need a media player capable of playing 4K media. That’s where the Sony FMP-X1 4K Media Player comes in. The FMP-X1 is set to be released over the summer, and will bring 4K resolution feature films and video shorts to your television for $699.

Sony FMP-X1 4K Media Player coming over the summer

The FMP-X1 will come bundled with 10 feature films and video shorts. The feature films include: Bad Teacher, Battle:Los Angeles, The Bridge on the River Kawi, The Karate Kid, Salt, Taxi Driver, That’s My Boy, The Amazing Spider-Man, The Other Guys, and Total Recall. A majority of those films are actually very appealing, and should help make the $700 price-tag much less painful to stomach.

When Fall rolls around, Sony will also be launching a video-distribution service that owners of the FMP-X1 will be able to take advantage of. The service will offer a whole library of 4K movies and shows for a fee. Titles will be available from a variety of productions, including, of course, Sony Pictures Entertainment. Whether the fee will be per title, or one-set fee for an unlimited amount of content is still unknown.

Also on April 17th, Sony will be working together with The Tribeca Film Festival to promote its 4K video production among amateur and professional film makers, in hopes of getting many film makers to support its products. However, it may be a while before people can adapt to 4K televisions. With the $4,999/$6,999 price-tag along with the $699 price-tag for the media player, these products aren’t exactly affordable for the average consumer.

Sony announces pricing for 55 and 65inch 4K TVs, shipping April 21st

Think $25,000 for an 84-inch 4K TV is a bit tough to swallow? You’re certainly not alone, but if you’re willing to compromise on a few viewable inches, you could very well save yourself quite a bit of cash. At Sony’s NAB press conference today here in Las Vegas, the company finally shared pricing for its smaller 4K models, the Bravia XBR-55X900A and the XBR-65X900A, which ring in at 55 and 65 inches, respectively. That first flavor will retail for a mere $5,000, with its larger sibling due in stores for just two grand more. As we learned at CES, both models offer Triluminous displays with X-Reality PRO and Motionflow XR960 technology, WiFi and NFC one-touch screen mirroring, not to mention native support for displaying 3,840 x 2,160 pixels images. The more budget-friendly duo will hit stores on April 21st — they’ll also be available to order online in just two weeks’ time.

Philips DesignLine TVs livens up your living room

I am quite sure that majority of our readers are technologically savvy in the first place, otherwise you would not be checking out this site, would you? Having said that, most folks in the US would have upgraded their TV to a flat screen display that is slim, in order to comply with digital signals some years back, meaning chunky CRTs are not longer in vogue. As for folks living in Europe, it really depends on your budget as well as the necessity of getting a large, flat screen TV in your living room. Philips thinks that it would not make much sense to jump over to Ultra HD resolution TVs like most of the other major TV manufacturers have done, but will instead continue to concentrate on a Full HD display that emphasizes lots on the external aesthetics without compromising on internal quality, which is where the Philips DesignLine range of TVs were born.

At first glance, it would be safe to say that Philips has taken design to a totally new level, as their DesignLine range comprises of one seamless sheet of gradient black glass, where it will lean against the wall without the need for a stand or visible frame. Now that is certainly a work of art, although I am quite sure any home with boisterous children who love running around and kicking a ball about in the living room would leave the parents in a difficult position – either the TV or the kids must go. No prizes for guessing which of the two will remain at home, of course.

The new DesignLine TV is not only light but transparent, where its frameless glass front displays a smooth flow from black opaque to transparent in standby mode, ending up as virtually invisible when watching TV. The inclusion of ‘Ambilight 3-sided XL’ will deliver a floating appearance of the Philips DesignLine TV, as the projecting light matches the color of the on-screen content precisely onto the wall behind. You will find the DesignLine TV series arrive in 46″ and 55″ screen sizes, as they hit Europe and Russia in Q2 2013 for a yet undisclosed price.

Samsung S9 Ultra HD TV priced with monster flagship lineup

The folks at Samsung have begun to deliver their full 2013 lineup of beastly television technology complete with prices, starting with the monstrous S9 UHD. The Samsung S9 UHD TV going by code-name UN85S9 will be available in pre-order form from Samsung by the end of March for a cool $39,999 USD. This machine works with an 85-inch 4k-resolution screen and we’ve had our own up close and personal look at it earlier this year at CES 2013 – have a peek!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The S9 you’re seeing in the video here is one of two eye-destroying UHD televisions revealed by Samsung this year at CES, the other being an absurd 110-incher. This S9 model is a bit closer to a realistic release – if you’ve got $40k, that is – and you’ve got 3-way 2.2 channel, 120 watt sound blasting forth as well. With the ability to up-scale HD or Full-HD to UHD-level picture quality, you’ll have trouble turning this machine down if presented with it in a shiny birthday wrapping.

This pricing scale has been announced alongside several other devices that you’ll certainly want to pick up besides the beast – perhaps not the whole lot, but a few here and there, of course. Have a peek at this rather simple-to-digest list and see what you make of it:

• HW-F750 soundbar with vacuum tube technology: March for $799
• HT-F6500W home theater system with vacuum tube technology: March for $599
• DA-F60 portable wireless Bluetooth speaker: April for $299
• MX-FS9000 Giga Sound System (Flagship): May for $1,499
• MX-FS8000 Giga Sound System: June for $999
2013 Smart Evolution kit: May for $299.99

There’s also the Samsung 2013 flagship LED Smart TV if you’re not aiming to go insanely-highest-grade. We had a look at the F8000′s supreme exellence back at CES 2013 as well, there seeing its rather great “richest colors” and “highest contrasts” and “brightest picture quality of any Samsung LED TV to date.” This machine will be available in sizes ranging between 46-inches to 75-inches with varying price points throughout the year – fun! Same goes for the F8500 Plasma TV series, with several models between 51-inches and 64-inches coming this year at yet-unnamed price points.
