Sony X Factor Headphones Review: I Somehow Love These Gross, Gaudy Celebrity Headphones [Lightning Review]

Sony X headphones are everything we hate: Ostentatious, overpriced gear that’s nothing more than a cynical celebrity cash grab. In a world with justice and truth, such gaucherie wouldn’t exist—but we kind of love these headphones anyway. More »

Monster DNA Headphones: No Beats Included

At the beginning of the year, there were rumors that Dr. Dre and Monster were going to split ways. Since then, Monster announced that it would no longer be producing Beats headphones and started marketing their own branded ones.

Monster now seems to be diversifying their headphone line-up. They’ve learned how to make good headphones and now are offering quite a few different models. The new Monster DNA headphones were created in part with Viacom. The triangular shaped design sports a unique earpad and speaker housing, which is supposed to be quite comfortable, and made to reduce background noise.

Sony and Simon Cowell intro X-Factor-themed MDR-X10, celebrity headphones officially jump the shark for $300

Sony and Simon Cowell intro XFactorthemed MDRX10, celebrity headphones officially jump the shark for $300

We’re still wrapping our heads around this, but Sony and Simon Cowell have officially decided to join the celebrity-endorsed headphone bandwagon. Dubbed as the MDR-X10, the X-Factor-themed cans are certainly late to the party, but the vibrant red and silver color theme will ensure they get noticed — and we’re not saying that’s a good thing. $300 snags you the extra-sparkly circumaural earmuffs, an even more sparkly case and a duo of flat, tangle-resistant locking cables (one of which features a “made for iDevice” inline remote and mic). Unsurprisingly, the X10 is geared toward pumping out gobs of bass, being essentially a re-badge of the likes of Sony’s XB800 from its Extra Bass headphone lineup. We had the opportunity to give Cowell’s new headgear a fair amount of listening time, so jump past the break where we’ll judge its brief audition.

SOL Republic Tracks Ultra Headphones Review: A Wall of Sound with No Depth [Lightning Review]

When SOL Republic launched the Tracks Ultra headphones, we took issue with the vague description of the product. And it wasn’t just a lack of specs. There was no actual qualitative description about what made the sound of the Tracks Ultra different from the headphones’ excellent previous iteration. More »

SteelSeries Flux and Flux InEar Pro headsets handson

“This is the best sounding in-ear product below $250,” SteelSeries’ Chief Marketing Officer, Kim Rom, told us between songs. “I’ll go on record saying that.” Rom was talking about the firm’s new Flux In-Ear Pro headset, and had similar words for the brand’s foldable on-ear Flux cans. The earbuds and their full sized companions are part of the company’s “freedom to play” campaign, and it has the utmost confidence in them. Rom even told us the foldable Flux headset lasted 90 minutes in the firm’s “soccer test,” a SteelSeries tradition that plays out exactly like it sounds: international football with consumer electronics. Our hands-on was decidedly less rough.
