An Exercise Machine More Embarrassing Than a Shake Weight or a Thighmaster

Japan comes up with the weirdest exercise gadgets, but they’re usually targeted for the face. A couple of examples are the Hana Tsun Nose Straightener, the Eye Slack Haruka, the Rhythm Slim Chin Exerciser, and the Face Slimmer Mouthpiece,.

Korea proves they’re right up there with the Land of the Rising Sun when it comes to weird exercise machines with the Horse Riding Fitness Ace Power. It’s extremely unusual and also oddly inappropriate. You’ll see why in a bit…

Horse Riding Fitness Ace Power
As you can glean from its name, the exercise machine aims to let people mimic the action or movements that are associated with horseback riding. Picture people wide-legged and moving up and down while sitting on some odd machine, and, well, you’ll begin to feel uncomfortable yourself.

If words don’t do it for you, then check out the video below to see what I mean… (But you’ve been warned!)

AmoeBAND: The Most Versatile Bandage

Remember the Chameleon Bandage that changes color to match your skin tone once you stuck it on? It was definitely an interesting concept, although a difficult one to execute.

Another novel bandage design that actually has the potential to become an actual product is the AmoeBAND, designed by Tay Pek-Khai, Hsu Hao-Ming, Tsai Cheng-Yu, Chen Kuei-Yuan, Chen Yi-Ting, Lai Jen-Hao, Ho Chia-Ying, Chen Ying-shan, Weng Yu-Ching, and Chung Kuo-Ting.

AmoeBAND
The design of the AmoeBAND increases the bandages effectiveness and ups the comfort level for the users because of strategically placed cut-outs on the plasters. If you’ve ever used a bandage on your finger (I’m sure you have), then you might’ve noticed that it’s particularly hard to stick the bandaid on just right so that your digit’s movements won’t be limited. The same bandage can be used for flat areas, joints or fingertips.

AmoeBAND1

Aside from increased flexibility, the AmoeBAND’s come in four shades to match your skintone. It’s like finding a shade of concealer just right for your skin (girls can relate to this), only better, because you don’t really expect this kind of choice to come with bandaids.

The AmoeBAND comes in matchbox-type boxes that dispense the bandages with a quick push. And it seems like the designers through of everything, because the boxes are even labeled in Braille. It’s also a finalist for the 2012 IDEA Award.

Faraday Porteur Electric Bicycle: The Perfect Bike for Wealthy Hipsters

I have to say that this electric bike looks pretty awesome. It was designed by San Francisco-based Faraday Bicycles and this is their first production model. The team is looking to fund the production of the Porteur through Kickstarter.

The Faraday Porteur is an electric bike and it’s been designed for commuters. The lithium batteries are hidden inside the frame, allowing the rest of the bike to look pretty elegant and comfortable. The boost mode feature has an active assist that will help users ride up slopes. There are built-in sensors that analyze how much pedaling is being done, and it matches foot strokes with an electric motor. The bike includes a quick-release front rack for storage and high-powered front and rear LED lights. The battery supposedly can be recharged in under an hour(?) and it has a 10-15 mile autonomy. It also has disc brakes, allowing it to stop quicker than other commuters that don’t have these.

The Faraday Porteur has been launched through a Kickstarter project, where it’s selling for the rather extravagant “introductory” price of $3500(USD). At the time of writing, with 21 days of funding left, the project has amassed $73,000 out of a $100,000 goal, so it’s got a very good chance of getting funded.

Virtual Fridge Lock Tells Social Networks If You’re Cheating on Your Diet

Diets are tough. They’re especially hard if you’ve got a sweet tooth and a penchant for ice cream. But if you’re the type who gets on better with a support group, then you’ll definitely need the Virtual Fridge Lock.

Fridge lockIt’s basically a magnet that’s being distributed by Meta Real, a diet reeducation program. Just stick it onto your fridge, and it’ll automatically alert your social network and weight-loss buddies that someone’s about to break his or her diet.

It’s a clever idea coupled with good execution.

And if the Fridge Lock fails, make sure you’ve locked down your ice cream pints with the Ben & Jerry’s Pint Lock as a final effort to ward off temptation.

Select iBall Approved by FIFA for Confirming Goals

When it comes professional soccer around the world, FIFA is the league where most of the major teams play. It’s not uncommon for the referees to have a difficult time calling a goal during a match because it can be hard to determine when the ball passes the goal line. FIFA has just approved a new high-tech soccer ball that will eliminate any misunderstandings when it comes to scoring a goal or not.

SELECT iBall

The ball itself looks normal on the outside, but has bands of copper sensors on the inside that wrap completely around the ball. When a player kicks the ball through the goal, as soon as the entire ball crosses the goal line antennas mounted to the goal pick up the score. A light on a watch worn by officials then comes on to signify the score.

It’s not clear at this point when the ball will make its first appearance in a professional soccer match. However, this technology should easily end any arguments about whether or not the goal was good down at the pub.

Smoking Vaccine Could Block Nicotine Buzz

After working in a hospital for over a decade, I’ve been around many people that had major health problems related to smoking. Combine the health issues with the fact that smoking is just absolutely disgusting to me, I think everyone should stop smoking. Especially my UPS driver, who routinely delivers me packages that smell like a used ashtray.

My dad used to smoke so I can appreciate how hard it is for people to quit, though. Scientists have been working on a vaccine that is designed to flood the body with an antibody to attack nicotine as it enters the body, rendering it useless as a source of pleasure.

smoker

The researchers are conducting a study in mice and have found that the so-called smoking vaccine is up to 85% effective at blocking nicotine in a mouse brain. The researchers say years of additional research is needed before the vaccine can be tested on people.

“As far as we can see, the best way to treat chronic nicotine addiction from smoking is to have these Pac-Man-like antibodies on patrol, clearing the blood as needed before nicotine can have any biological effect.” The challenge according to the researchers has been to develop a vaccine that is able to produce enough antibodies to stop nicotine from entering the brain and delivering the effects smokers crave.

O2Amp Mood Divining Glasses Let You See How Others are Feeling

These new glasses are supposed to amplify the wearer’s ability to interpret the emotions and health of other people, by emphasizing the differences in color as well as brightness of their skin tone. The O2amp glasses were developed by 2AI Labs and I’d like to try them out to see how accurately they work.

The tinted glasses are supposed to have numerous medical applications as well. By reducing parts of the visible light spectrum, they highlight skin oxygenation and hemoglobin concentration. These could even help medical professionals locate veins, detect trauma or cyanosis.

These kinds of tinted shades could also be used in sports, security and poker. However, I’m sure they’ll get banned soon enough if anyone uses them in sports or poker to read the emotional state of other players.

The O2Amp glasses are currently being tested at a couple of regional hospitals for their effectiveness.
