Zepp 3D Motion Sensors Will Help You Suck Less at Sports

As the old adage goes, “practice makes perfect.” I had a coach in high school that was fond of a different adage it went something like “perfect practice makes perfect”, because if you practice something incorrectly, you’ll learn it incorrectly. With that little fact in mind a company called Zepp Labs has unveiled a 3D motion sensor to help improve your game in three different sports.

The company behind the GolfSense swing sensor has announced Zepp Tennis, Zepp Baseball, and Zepp Golf – which all share the same sensor tech -designed to track statistics about your swing and help you learn where and how to improve. The sensor connects via Bluetooth to sports-specific applications running on a smartphone or tablet. The application is available for Android and iOS devices.

Each sensor has a mount specifically designed for the sport you’re playing and captures 1000 points of data per second when you swing. The sensor has an internal ARM procuessor, multiple motion sensors, and of storage for up to 200,000 swings depending on the sport. The sensors will be available next month for $149.99(USD) each.

Robo-Boots Give a Powerful Boost to Your Every Step

Aging is part of being human. Eventually, that spring in your step will be replaced by a slow (but hopefully steady) pace as you near your sixties. People who are in this stage of life and are frustrated at the limitations of old age will be happy to hear about the Ankle Walking Assist Device (abbreviated as AWAD).

These exoskeleton robo-boots come with a waist-mounted battery pack. Once they’re on, they immediately get to work. Its sensors will detect whenever its wearer is about to take a step. It will then give a robotic boost of power to provided added strength when the person takes that step.

AWAD

AWAD won’t give you super-human speed, but it will help older folks and those with limited strength get around at a faster pace than normal. AWAD was developed by Yaskawa Electric, who hopes to launch the system sometime in 2015.

NASA Will Pay up to $5000 per Month for Study Participants to Stay in Bed

NASA recently announced that it is looking for people to perform what may be the easiest job ever. The space agency is looking for participants for 70 days of study and they will pay you $5000 per month to do nothing but lay in bed. The study is being conducted by NASA’s Flight Analogs Project Team at the Johnson Space Center.

space sleep

The experiment is designed to study the effects of prolonged exposure to microgravity. These effects can be simulated here on Earth by forcing people to remain horizontal for 70 days. The goal of the Bed Rest Study is to help improve conditions for astronauts who work in a weightless environment.

NASA says that by placing participants in a slightly tilted down position with their heads down and their feet up 24 hours a day for 70 days straight without getting out of bed except for limited times will simulate what happens to the astronauts body during weightlessness in space flight. Participants in the test will have access to video games, TV, books, and Internet. Food will be provided to help participants maintain body weight.

Owlet Baby Bootie Lets You Monitor Your Baby’s Vitals from Your Smartphone

The Owlet isn’t a baby monitor is the usual sense of the word. I mean, it lets you monitor your baby, but not in the way that most baby monitors do, which is let you hear what’s going on at the moment.

Owlet

Instead, the Owlet is actually a bootie that measures your baby’s vital stats. It’s pretty compact and fits into a washable bootie (yes, it’s waterproof too), so it shouldn’t be too hard to keep this particular monitor on your child.

owlet 2

The Owlet works in conjunction with an app that lets you see how your baby is doing, providing quick stats on your baby’s position, temperature, oxygen levels and heart rate. It can also detect if they are sleeping.

Its creators were hoping to raise $100,000 to fund production, and have already exceeded their goal. The project was rejected by Kickstarter (I’m not sure why), so they have taken to creating their own crowdfunding site to raise the money. You can make a pledge of $159(USD) to get one of your very own Owlet baby monitor. That seems like a small price to pay to have this sort of peace of mind.

Pirate-themed CT Scanner Will Scan Your Pirate Booty

It can be scary to get a CT scan, whether you are an adult or a kid. God only knows what that radiation is doing to you. What if you end up like the Hulk? To ease the fears of children who need to endure a trip through the machine, New York-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital is one place to go.

They are one of the largest children’s hospitals in the country and so they felt it was up to them to make sure they were administering the lowest doses of radiation possible to the kids, so they picked up one of GE’s Adventure Series CT scanners – this one in a pirate theme. (They also make jungle, underwater, summer camp and space themed scanners.)

In addition to the scanner, the entire scanning suite is pirate-themed. Arrrr! Let’s all do it. Free scans on me! Wait. How much? Okay, everybody just enjoy the images. On me.

Beauty Lift High Nose: A ‘Higher, Firmer’ Nose – Minus the Surgery?

Many of us have a hundred and one things that we’d want to change about ourselves. The majority of us don’t really do anything about it, either because we’re afraid to go under the knife, can’t afford to do so, or just don’t think it’s worth the risk or money.

Beauty Lift High NoseHere’s a bit of good news for those who want some improvement but don’t believe in plastic surgery for one reason or the other: there are alternatives that are much cheaper that don’t require surgery. The catch? There’s no guarantee that you’ll get the advertised results.

One of these alternatives is the Beauty Lift High Nose, which is just one of many silly looking facial improvement products being offered by Japan Trend Shop. This particular one is meant to be worn on a person’s face, particularly over the nose, where it will vibrate on targeted areas once it’s turned on. Apparently, these vibrations will help make the nose “firmer and higher.”

The site recommends that people use it every day for three minutes for optimum results. The Beauty Lift High Nose retails for $68(USD). Such a deal.

Comfort Cast Makes Broken Arms Look Almost Desireable

Whenever you have a broken limb, life can get quite difficult. There aren’t plenty of ways that you can make it better, however, sticking a screen on it and completely modernizing is something I hadn’t thought about before now.

The Comfort Cast concept by Kyuho Song is definitely an improvement over a traditional cast. You can use the e-Ink screen to Facebook your status, and it will even allow doctors to monitor your condition remotely, and has a media player built in. It even has an air pressure system so the cast can be adjusted.

The system includes a charging and disinfection system which makes the Comfort Cast reusable too. It’s going to be interesting to see if something like this will ever be available. Hopefully, you’ll be able to rent them directly from hospitals and give them back once you’ve fully recovered.

Varibike: Trains Your Arms as Much as Your Legs

Cycling has always been a good way to exercise, but the Varibike aims to make it even better, by working out a larger number of muscle groups simultaneously.

varibike propulsion leg arm bicycle

The Varibike was designed as a work-out solution as well as a therapy solution. It coordinates and creates new synapses in the brain by using leg and arm propulsion. It has an intuitive inclination steering system, which will help build muscle. Thanks to selective pedaling, individual muscle groups are allowed to recover and regenerate during a ride.

In addition to the workout improvement, the makers of the Varibike say the increased input from both arms and legs can propel their bike up to 30% faster than conventional pedal-powered bikes.

The Varibike FR2 costs €3,999 (~ $5,350 USD). The FR3 adds separate freewheels to each arm crank, which allows you to use them side-by-side, in a rowing motion. It costs €4,499 (~ $6,019 USD).

Bowflex Boost Fitness Band: HAL Will Make You Exercise!

Fitness bands, apps and devices are a great way to motivate you to keep fit. There’s nothing like adding a bit of competitiveness into your fitness routine, especially if you don’t exercise with partners or friends.

bowflex boost fitness band exercise tracker

The Bowflex Boost is supposed to be a low-cost alternative to some of the pricier fitness bands available on the market right now. Just like the others, it will track your daily activities, as well as the quality of your sleep. It will come with a companion iOS app that will sync your data via Bluetooth.

The Bowflex Boost will launch this September for just $50(USD). It also looks a bit like the HAL 9000 – or maybe a Cylon.

Facewaver Exercise Mask Makes You Look Like a Real Horror Show

Does your face look saggy and sallow? Do your facial muscles feel strained, even when you make the simplest of facial expressions? It probably lacks exercise and one way you could get it is with the Facewaver Exercise Mask.

Facewaver Exercise Mask

It looks like a ski mask, only it doesn’t cover your entire head. Its product page claims that it “gently stretches the skin and muscles in several directions, improving and increasing blood circulation to the surface of your face.” All you have to do is put it on and make different faces for five minutes a day.

Facewaver Exercise Mask1

This is another strange facial-exercise-related contraption available for import from Japan Trend Shop, who previously brought us the Hana Tsun Nose Straightener, the Eye Slack Haruka, the Rhythm Slim Chin Exerciser, and the Face Slimmer Mouthpiece.

No guarantees if the facial mask will work, but I guarantee you will scare a child or two when you’re making faces with this pink mask on your face. It sells for $60 (USD). That may sound expensive, but the expressions on the faces of others who see you wearing this will be priceless.
