Collapsible Bike Helmet: Hope It Doesn’t Collapse on Your Head

Let’s face it, helmets are huge. They are a hassle to store and transport when not on your head. Want a bike helmet to protect your head, but prefer something that’s not as bulky as traditional helmets? The Collapsible Helmet collapses, accordion style, when not in use for easy storage.

Designer Michael Rose created this helmet, which is rugged despite the way it looks. When collapsed, this helmet becomes the size of a book so that you can easily put it in a backpack. It uses foldable layers of plastic to make it both safe and small, yet when opened up, it can still absorb shocks.

It was inspired by origami of course, and it’s designed in such a way as to be safe, despite looking fragile.

As long as it doesn’t collapse during an accident, I think we can all love this helmet.

Standing Task Chair Lets You Sit While You’re Using Your Standing Desk

Many people believe that standing is better than sitting, especially for those who have desk jobs or work long hours on their computers. Standing for hours on end in front of a standing desk isn’t the most comfortable thing to do, but it could give you the added benefits promised for those who stand up more.

Adding some comfort to this, though, is the StandRight Standing Task Chair.

Standing Task Chair

It basically lets you cheat a little while you do your work at your standing desk. The Standing Task Chair is designed to support you while you stand, distributing the weight between your butt and knees. It also has supports for your knees and an inclined footrest so it’ll make you feel like you’re sitting on air. That’s definitely a whole lot more comfortable than just standing up.

The Standing Task Chair was designed by Jeff Heath and it’s up for funding on Kickstarter through July 1st. A minimum pledge of $499(USD) will get you one of your very own.

TARDIS Cast: Broken on the Inside

This Doctor Who cast is great. No, not the cast of the show. The cast you see here. I’m actually surprised we haven’t seen something like this before, since the Doctor runs around so much. You would think he would have broken some body part long ago.

TARDIS Cast
It probably has some kind of magical timey-wimey healing properties that regenerate its wearer’s bones. This cast was made for Laura Keeney while her arm was healing. To help cheer her up, her friend Zak Kinsella painted her cast in the geekiest way possible.

I guess it was either this or make it look like a Cyberman arm, which would have been equally as cool to look at.

Vapur Foldable Water Bottles Have Built-in Filters

Clean water can be hard to come by, especially when you’re in the great outdoors or traveling in areas that don’t have sufficient facilities. While you might come by a water source, the water is probably unsafe for drinking and might contain contaminants or pollutants that might make you sick.

Small, portable water filtration systems are already available, but Vapur goes one step further by including an actual water bottle with their system.

Vapur

Vapur already manufactures a line of foldable and collapsible water bottles that are widely used by travelers and those who want a convenient way to store and transport water.

Vapur calls their portable water purification system MicroFilter. It’s packaged and sold with the 1-L Eclipse Anti-Bottle, and both weigh just 2.7 oz (77 g) when empty. The 0.2-micron filter can remove 99.9999 percent of waterborne bacteria and 99.9 percent of protozoa, although it can’t remove viruses like most other filters.

Vapur1Vapur’s new portable filtration system has received recognition from publications like Outside and National Geographic. The MicroFilter system was launched this week and can be purchased for $69.99(USD).

Can’t Focus? Melon EEG Headband Gets Inside Your Head to Help You Concentrate

Are your thoughts usually all over the place? Do you have difficulty keeping your thoughts at bay? Then you might need something like the Melon EEG headband to help you get your thoughts in order.

Spelled out, EEG stands for “electroencephalography”, which is the act of measuring brain activity along your scalp. This is basically what the Melon headband does when you wear it and go about your daily routine. Apart from just recording your brain activity, Melon’s special algorithms translates this data into a measure of focus.

Melon EEG

On its Kickstarter project page, the Melon wireless headband app is described as being “built to be worn while engaging in a variety of activities – from working, to studying, playing sports, dancing, practicing an instrument, programming, painting, or doing yoga.” The system boasts of turning focus into a “measurable” and “understandable” variable – something that I’m sure a lot of people would be interested in.

Aside from determining your level of focus, Melon also provides personalized feedback and insights on how its wearer can increase and improve his or her focus. It even offers suggestions for activities like origami to achieve that purpose.

The Melon headband and app is currently up for funding through June 13 on Kickstarter, where a minimum pledge of $99(USD) will get you one of your very own.

Superheroes Join Cancer Center’s Fight Against the Big ‘C’

Cancer sucks. There’s no cure (yet) – only prevention – and no one’s exempt from either getting it now or in the future. Every year, men and women, young and old, fall ill to the dreaded Big ‘C’. It’s a painful and difficult process for everyone, but probably more so for kids who might not completely understand what’s happening.

So to make things better, even just a little bit, the A.C. Camargo Cancer Center in São Paulo, Brazil teamed up with Warner Bros. to give their children’s cancer center a new look.

Superheroes vs Cancer

The theme? Superheroes. Chemotherapy has been rebranded as ‘superformula’ to fight against one of the biggest villains against humanity. IV bags are tucked into colorful Justice League-themed boxes to make them look cooler, and special comic books are handed out depicting how Justice League characters lost but then gained their powers after undergoing similar treatments as the young patients.

Superheroes vs Cancer1

(The) experience went far beyond the covers by also providing a new look to the entire Children’s Ward: the game room was turned into the Hall of Justice, corridors and doors were decorated in the same theme, and the exterior acquired an exclusive entrance for these little heroes… As any good cancer doctor will tell you, the most important step in fighting the disease is believing in a cure.

Belief breeds hope, and hope breeds strength. With a fighting spirit, cancer can be beaten, just like every other villain out there.

Musguard Rollable Bike Fender: Never Get Splashed Again!

Most of the time, you don’t need a bicycle fender except the few times that it rains when you’re out and about. We all know that when it starts to pour, your wheel will send lots of dirty water all over your rear end, which can get really annoying.

The Musguard is a very simple, removable bicycle fender that can be rolled up and stored on your frame or in one of your pockets. It weighs about 35g, and requires no tools or special mounts to install. It’s die-cut from recyclable polypropylene plastic sheets. From what I can tell, the concept works best for bikes without a rear brake caliper, and probably works best with a disc brake.

The project was launched through Kickstarter, and with 17 days of funding left, it’s amassed $21,000 out of a $10,000 goal, so it will be fully funded. You’ll need to pledge at least $20(USD) to get your own.

DARPA Warrior Web Suit: Exo-Endoskeleton

We’ve seen a variety of artificial exoskeletons that can augment a person’s strength and even help disabled people walk again. Their main disadvantage is that they’re quite bulky and heavy. That’s why DARPA is working on a similar suit, except this one’s meant to be worn like an undergarment.

darpa warrior web suit

As indicated in the concept image above, the Warrior Web suit is designed to help soldiers carry additional load while supporting injury prone areas such as the ankles, knees and hip joints. The idea is to provide all this while still allowing the soldier to wear the usual clothing and armor. The video below shows a soldier carrying a 61lb. load while wearing a Warrior Web prototype:

DARPA envisions future versions of the Warrior Web suit to have even more capabilities, such as “core injury mitigation technologies; comprehensive analytical representations; regenerative actuation; adaptive sensing and control; and suit human-to-wearer interface.” Perhaps the real world Iron Man will just look like Tony Stark.

Foot-Powered Back Massager: Too Complicated for Comfort?

Want a massage? Then give yourself one by getting one of the many available self-massaging devices available on store shelves in most retailers.

Massagers are pretty common gadgets and they’re usually pretty easy to use. Most of them anyway, with the notable exception of the foot-powered back massager with hand tool that you see pictured below.

weird back massager

Even their model looks like she’s having a hard time with the device, but maybe that’s just me imagining what it would be like to try using this thing they call a massager.

It’ll probably be easier to use though, once you get the hang of it. The massager is described as allowing “the user to apply firm pressure for extended periods of time while completey relaxing the target muscles.” It also instructs users to adjust the push-button locking pin for back pain relief. Or you could just go see a good massage therapist.

The foot-powered back massager retails for about $50 (USD) over on Amazon.

Naki’o: A Four-Legged Friend Gets Four Prosthetic Paws

Dogs have long been touted as being man’s best friend. Aside from companionship, dogs can save human lives, depending on their training, by sniffing out bombs, transporting medicine (remember Balto?), and helping the blind ‘see.’ Given all the joy and help that dogs give humans, it’s only fitting that humans give back to them as well.

Take the case of Naki’o, an adorable dog that lost all four paws to frostbite when abandoned as a puppy.

He did fine as a pup, but began having difficulty supporting his weight as he grew bigger. So his loving owner, Christie Pace, searched for alternatives to help Naki’o out. She explained: “I have a soft spot for rescue animals in general. I was looking for something different, unique. I wanted to make more of a difference than a regular dog. I knew I could help him out.”

Pace set up a fundraiser to get prosthetics for Naki’o from OrthoPets. But when the animal hospital saw how well the pup did with his initial fittings, they set him up with a complete set of prosthetics, free of charge.

I guess you could say they have a heart of gold. Oh, and a little bit of trivia: Naki’o is the world’s first ever dog to be outfitted with custom prosthetics on all four legs!
