Surgeon Simulator Lets You Clumsily Try Your Hand at Open Heart Surgery

You know how the hero in the movie that you’re watching suddenly takes over the controls of the plane or helicopter, right before it crashes into the ground or something, and manages to fly it well because he or she played flight simulation games on the PC or on some other platform?

Well, don’t expect the same thing to happen to you with the newest “true-to-life” simulation game to hit the interwebs called Surgeon Simulator.

Surgeon SimulatorWhile you might be able to perform open heart surgery in the game (or not), I doubt you’ll find yourself being able to do the same thing in real life.

The video game was created by Bossa Studios for the 2013 Global Game Jam. You, the player, are supposed to control the hands of a not-so-skilled surgeon using your keyboard and mouse.

You are Nigel Burke… an ordinary guy, with no outstanding skills. Somehow forced to perform a heart transplant, using any tools available. Complete the operation in the quickest time possible, with minimal blood loss! Features Revolutionary 1 to 1 finger manipulation control system realistic surgical tool physics. Professional voice acting. Thumping soundtrack. This is, Surgeon Simulator 2013.

Despite the precision controls, so far, no one’s managed to complete the surgery successfully, but who knows? You might be the first one. Give it your best shot now.

FDA Approves iRobot RP-VITA Robot to Work in Hospitals

iRobot makes robots for all sorts of needs in the military and other business areas. In the consumer space, the company is probably best known for its line of robotic vacuum cleaners, including the Roomba and Scooba. Last year, iRobot started trials of a robot designed to work in hospitals – called the RP-Vita, or Remote Presence Virtual Independent Telemedicine Assistant.

Developed by iRobot and InTouch Health, the robot is a telepresence device that stands about as tall as your typical human. It’s fitted with dual screens, a video camera, Wi-Fi and other sensors and even has its own stethoscope allowing doctors to perform patient examinations remotely. It uses an iPad to control communications, and the robot is able to use sensors to map its environment and navigate autonomously.

iRobot has announced that the RP-VITA has now been approved by the FDA to be used for active patient monitoring in pre-operative, peri-operative, and post-surgical settings. It can work in several areas of the hospital including cardiovascular, neurological, prenatal, psychological, and critical care. These robots are far from cheap and are estimated to cost as much as $4000 per month to purchase and operate, but that still could represent a significant cost savings by allowing doctors to check in on more patients and more frequently.

Study Says One in Three People Feel Worse about Themselves after Visiting Facebook

A recent study conducted by two German universities found that envy runs rampant on Facebook. Researchers from Humboldt University and from Technical University in Darmstadt, Germany conducted a study and found that one in three people felt worse about themselves after visiting the site and more dissatisfied with their lives.

The study reports that people who browse the site without contributing were affected the most. According to the study, the biggest source of envy posted to Facebook was vacation photos. The study claimed that more than half of all envy incidents were triggered by vacation pictures.

The second most common cause of envy on the social networks is social interaction. Apparently, a lot of users get jealous over the amount of birthday greetings, likes, and comments their Facebook friends receive on posts and photos. Maybe what people need are Facebook friends who are uglier, poorer, and take less vacations.

If using Facebook really makes you feel bad about yourself, perhaps you should get off of your computer and do something about it.

LG Smart Activity Tracker Wristband Takes Aim at Nike+ FuelBand

It seems like this is the year that many manufacturers are trying to get into the fitness tracking wristband market, which has been largely dominated by the Nike+ FuelBand since it came out. Now LG has outed a gadget which seems like a mashup of many different devices, all put onto your wrist.

The LG Smart Activity Tracker actually looks a lot like the Nike+ FuelBand, and has many of the same features. It has an accelerometer and altimeter to measure activity. It will know whether you’re walking, running, or sitting, and its data can synced to an app on Android smartphones. It will also work with LG Smart TVs to sync up with on-screen exercise programs. LG also plans on adding a heart-rate monitor, which would be a pretty cool addition.

Unlike Nike’s device, LG’s wrist gadget can connect with your phone and tell you whether you receive notifications. Also, it has a touchscreen, which beats the FuelBand’s single button interface.

LG expects to release the Smart Activity Tracker this summer, but there’s no word yet on cost.
