When firefighters have to enter a burning building, much of their job still involves blindly feeling their way through dense plumes of toxic fumes in search of those trapped inside. However, a novel new helmet design could one day give firefighters the ability to see through the smoke and hear beyond the roar of the flames.

Remember Hövding, the Swedish bike helmet released a few years back that looks like a stylish, poofy collar and supposedly inflates like an airbag upon impact? In a new video, the company explains more about how it works—claiming it’s actually much safer than a traditional helmet.

The Schuberth C3 Pro is the best motorcycle helmet you can buy. Sure, there are caveats. I haven’t worn that many helmets. There’s really no such thing as a "best" helmet, considering individual needs and applications—an open-faced off-road helmet isn’t going to be great on the track—but for the average rider looking for the best all-around, well-crafted, space-aged materials helmet with all the latest technology stuffed inside, I can’t see anything besting the C3 Pro. But after three months of riding with the Schuberth exclusively, I’m still not sure you should buy one, because a cheap pair of earbuds and a smartphone almost obviates every factor at which the Schuberth excels.

Over-exposure to the sun is of course bad for your skin, but that’s not the only thing adversely affected by its rays. Man-made materials like plastic will slowly degrade when left out in the sun, so 3M has developed a new line of hard hats featuring a color-changing UV sensor that tells the wearer their head protection might not actually be so safe.
