They’re a staple of cartoon prankery, but thanks to the magic of high-speed photography, we now have real-life proof that a room full of primed mouse traps is an awesome thing. The Slow Mo Guys put 150 of them on a table and then sacrificed themselves for science—and some awesome footage—by setting them off.
There’s no denying that everything looks cooler in slow motion, but birds of prey on the hunt are particularly mesmerizing through the lens of a high-speed camera. This Goshawk is being lured into attacking a water balloon baited with a piece of meat, and its mid-air maneuvers make even our most advanced fighter planes look primitive.
It’s usually over in an instant, but when you capture macro footage of a match head igniting at 4,000 frames per second, suddenly that almost instantaneous event becomes a fascinating look into the science of fire and ignition. And believe it or not, YouTuber UltraSlo had to throw an additional 2,000 watts of light on this match head to capture this mesmerizing footage—that’s a lot of birthday candles.
Is there a better way to ring in November than watching a controlled explosion? Sure there is, if said explosion was captured by a Phantom Flex high-speed camera at 2,500 fps. The Slow Mo Guys are back and after playing around with a couple of grenades (please don’t try that at home) they set their sites—or viewfinder—on their largest explosion yet.
Digital cameras and high-speed photography go hand in hand today, with many models letting you easily adjust the frame rate to capture your own high-speed footage. But believe it or not, high-speed digital cameras are actually a relatively new technology. Up until recently this was another area of photography where film still reigned supreme.
By now, you probably experienced enough travel headaches to last you another year now that both Thanksgiving and other major holidays are over. Many of you probably traveled by plane, train or automobile to get back home to spend the holidays with your loved ones, and not-so loved ones, too. Traveling to your home probably became an all-day ordeal, but if you were riding by China’s newest high-speed railway, you probably could have been there and back in the same day.
China’s high-speed railway takes travelers from Beijing, which is located in there northern part of the country, all the way down to Guangzhou in the south covering a total of 1,428 miles at 186MPH. A ticket to ride the new railway isn’t cheap as it’ll cost approximately $139 for the full trip from Beijing to Guangzhou, but the travel time has been severely cut down from 20 hours to 8 hours. And 8 hours would be perfect if you’d like to catch up on your sleep, but it’ll have to be done during the day as the line currently doesn’t offer overnight service.
If you need to travel from Beijing to Guangzhou in as little time as possible, air travel is still the best option, but for those folks who don’t want to spend more money for a flight as well as worry about more security, China’s new railway seems to be the way to go.

It’s the work of researchers at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia who specialize in high-speed fluid imaging, which sounds like a pretty awesome job. More »
The world can be an upsetting place at times. But no matter how badly your day might be going, there’s one thing that can always bring a little cheer back into your life: dogs! Dogs fetching balls, dogs diving in pools, and dogs just being generally awesome at 1,000 frames per second. More »
