Hitachi introduces Ropits, a robotic single passenger car

Hitachi has unveiled its Ropits single passenger robot car, which looks like a Fisher Price Cozy Coupe for adults and does the driving all on its own. The name and style prompt one to think of a science fiction contraption, but it’s the vehicle’s autonomic functionality that truly brings the idea of “futuristic” to the forefront.

Ropits stands for Robot for Personal Intelligent Transport System, and was designed to aid those who find walking difficult. The idea is that Ropits vehicles could be outfitted in a city, for example, and hailed via a computer or kiosk of some sort positioned in various places around town. The robotic car will retrieve the passenger and whisk him or her away to their destination.

The tiny car achieves its autonomic functionality via a variety of navigation tools, including GPS, a gyro sensor, and laser sensors. The gyro will help the car remain stable on uneven roads, while the laser sensors will be used to judge distance from items. The GPS, obviously, will allow the passenger to tell Ropits where to go.

A quick glance at the vehicle could prompt concerns that it may be unstable with such a small base, but those concerns have been addressed by Hitachi, which designed the Ropits so that each wheel is controlled via what it calls active suspension, helping to keep things both stable and comfortable. What do you think of this little car? Let us know in the comments!

Hitachi intros UltraVision LED TVs with Rokufriendly streaming, freshens Value TVs and sound bars for the fall

Although Hitachi was one of the first in line to promise support for Roku Streaming Sticks through MHL, it didn’t have much more to say without the TVs to back up the claim. The second half of the puzzle is complete now that the company’s fall TV revision is underway. Snag its new UltraVision UltraThin S606 TV in its one of its 42-, 46- or 55-inch sizes and you can discreetly (if optionally) hide the equivalent of a full Roku box in one of the HDMI inputs. The S606 sits strictly in the mid-range, however. Its 120Hz, edge-LED LCD design is superceded by the W806, which comes only in 48- and 55-inch sizes while carrying 3D, IPTV support and WiFi. Those who can get by on 60Hz refresh rates can opt for the Value line, where the H306 and S406 offer 720p in 29- and 32-inch dimensions; a third H316 line brings 1080p to those same sizes while adding a 39-inch panel. Hitachi hasn’t said whether stores are stocking the TVs today, but it sees pricing ranging from $329 in the smaller Value sets to $1,399 for the largest W806 variant.

The TV builder’s audio mix isn’t being ignored with the refresh. Launching in tandem with the TVs, the HSB32B26 and HSB40B16 sound bars are designed to respectively match up with 32- and 40-inch TVs while delivering 3D sound processing and Apt-X Bluetooth audio. At $149 and $199, the sound bars are close enough in cost that we may only need a measuring tape to settle any purchasing dilemmas once the hardware is in stores.

Welcome to Thursday evening everyone – just one more work day to go and we’ll have arrived at the weekend once again. This afternoon we received more information about that massive Twitter password reset that occurred earlier in the day, while we learned that a number of Windows Phone 8 handsets will be available to order at both Verizon and AT&T tomorrow, including the HTC Windows Phone 8X. Verizon is expecting to complete its roll out of 4G LTE by mid-2013, while we learned that Grand Theft Auto V will feature Rockstar’s biggest in-game world yet.

Hulu has launched its new Hulu Kids service for paying subscribers, while the Samsung Galaxy Express and the MiFi Liberate are headed for AT&T. The creators of Expendable Rearmed have been working with NVIDIA to bring the classic Dreamcast game to Android, and we heard that Foxconn may be thinking about expanding into the US. Hitachi has revealed its lineup of HDTVs and Smart TVs for fall 2012, and scientists have spotted a “Super Earth” in the habitable zone of a star that’s 42 light years away. The HTC One S has popped up at T-Mobile with a price tag of zero dollars, and AT&T is willing to shave $100 off the price of a new tablet so long as you’re willing to sign a two-year data agreement. Flomio has taken to Kickstarter to raise funding for its FloJack NFC reader for iOS, and Mimo has introduced a new touch screen monitor that’s compatible with OS X.

We learned when Star Wars: The Old Republic will be going free-to-play, and GameFly is offering BioShock as a free download for a limited time, so if you haven’t played it yet, have at it. AT&T has backtracked somewhat on its FaceTime restrictions, and the Humble Bundle for Android 4 has launched with six games that are all worth checking out. Finally tonight, Chris Burns gives us his review of Evernote 5 for iOS, so be sure to have a look at that. That’s all for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up, enjoy the rest of your night folks!

Hitachi reveals full Fall 3D Smart TV and HDTV lineup

Welcome to the Autumn show with Hitachi for their full 3D Smart TV and next-generation HDTV lineup. This time they’re coming in hard with a selection of televisions that are strongly considering blowing your socks off, all with a pointed suggestion that you buy a ROKU to go along with them (ROKU-ready streaming options they say.) This collection has both an ULTRAVISION UltraThin LED Series and a Value Series to speak of – going all out!

With the ULTRAVISION UltraThin LED series, you’ll be grabbing Full HD 1080p picture quality with undeniable performance and “exceptional” clarity at 120Hz/60Hz refresh rates. There are several models in this lineup including the W806 Smart 3D TV series in 48- and 55-inch screen sizes as well as the platinum finish 42-, 46- and 55-inch screen sizes with Hitachi’s E-LED UltraThin Bezel. The Smart 3D units work with 120Hz refresh rates for 3D content as well as built-in WiFi and IPTV.

The 3D units in the ULTRAVISION series have lovely high gloss “piano black” – a term you may have heard before that means they really look super awesome and blacker than black, so to speak. They’ve also got Full HD 1080p and two pairs of 3D glasses. And they’re massive, of course.

Each of the 42-, 46- and 55-inch screen sizes in the ULTRAVISION series (the S606 line, that is) features a 120Hz Full HD 1080p display and are ENERGY STAR 5.3 standard for power consumption. They also note that these units are amongst the first “Roku ready” televisions on the market – this means that you can plug a Roku Streaming Stick in and have it worth without additional drivers – hot stuff!

Hitachi also offers a Value Series with the S406, H306 and H316. These units have an “ultra thin bezel”, Dolby Digital, and surround sound abilities. The S406 has a platinum finish and a 32-inch display with 60HZ 720p. The H306 has a 29-inch display and 720p HD resolution as well as 60 HZ refresh. Finally the H316 has 29-, 32- and 39-inch display sizes with 60HZ and Full HD 1080p.

The folks at Hitachi also note that they’ve got a few accessories to go along with this fabulous football-season set of releases, rocking forth with Sound Bars. The 32- and 40-inch class Sound Bars work with CONEQ 3D Sound technology each with four speakers for heavy blasting. These and two high frequency tweeters bring on the heat with Class D digital amplifiers and the whole show connect with your Bluetooth devices with ease.

Stay tuned for the Hitachi wave to continue flowing in! The Smart TV wave is moving in at a high rate – expect the best!
