Sceptre dives into 32-inch HDTV market with integrated DVD player

You can say that the cost of living has increased tremendously in just about every part of the world over the years, and having said that, more and more people cannot afford to get a place of their own, but will have to rent a room or a small apartment. Landed property prices have skyrocketed simply because no one makes land any more, and apartments as well as condominiums are not exactly the cheapest living quarters either. In land scarce countries like Japan and Hong Kong, you would be surprised to check out the living areas if you happen to live on a landed property all your life. This means consumer electronics that are released will need to be as compact as possible, and yet deliver the most bang for your buck. Sceptre does good this time around with their 32-inch LED HDTV that boasts of an integrated DVD player to further help you save space in your living room.

Sporting a true 31.5-inch crystal clear viewable area, the Sceptre E325BD-HD will deliver the kind of design and convenience required in smaller living spaces without having to sacrifice on image quality. Sporting a 720P LED display at 1366 × 768 resolution and a true widescreen 16:9 ratio, this bad boy will come with a trio of HDMI ports so that you can hook up a video game console and perhaps your notebook is you need a large secondary display to work with. Forget about connecting a DVD player to this HDTV, as you already have one built-in.

Sceptre claims that the E325BD-HD is so energy efficient, that it has an estimated yearly energy cost of only $11. I am not quite sure just what kind of benchmarks did they use to arrive at such a figure, surviving on an hour of TV a day perhaps? All in all, this puppy measures under 2″ thin, and tips the scales at under 20.3lbs with its stand. Expect to fork out $599 for the E325BD-HD if you are interested.

Captioning Telephone offers something new for incoming calls

Hmmm, the $99.95 Captioning Telephone is not something that you see everyday, considering how you are now able to “see” the phone calls that you cannot hear. Sporting a large, easy to read display screen, the Captioning Telephone offers free voice-to-caption service, and best of all is, you are not required to own any special equipment to get started in the first place. Senior citizens would definitely find the Captioning Telephone to be a decent addition to their arsenal of gizmos, where it works in a similar way as that of captioned TV. All words spoken by your caller will appear on a screen , scrolling right across so that you can keep up with the conversation in real time.

This allows you to give a correct answer or response as though you were still in the prime of your life. It will require you to have a high speed Internet connection though, as the technology used behind the generation of voice-to-text translation is pretty data intensive. Of course, should you not need the captioning function, just turn it off and the Captioning Telephone will function like any other standard phone. Other features include adjustable volume amplification, the ability to save captions for future review, and answering machine functionality.

Cut Straight

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. Yes, the holidays are around the corner. This of course means food, festivities, family, decorating the house and wrapping gifts. Boooo. Admittedly I always like the look of the tree after things are wrapped. But getting to that point is painful. It usually entails a chunk of an afternoon devoted to cutting, taping and tying bows. Thank goodness for egg nog. Any devices that can make the holiday time easier are welcomed in my world.

This solution is bound to make the wrapping woes easier. Laser guided scissors – as ingenious as double stick tape or wrapping paper with guide lines on the back. Technically they are Laser Guided Fabric Scissors, for $8.59 at miniinthebox.com among other places.  So yes, for you who sew or scrapbook, they work for you too. Two AA batteries will power the unit. Simply turn on the laser and follow the light as you cut. OK, don’t use it on your buddy’s haircut or anything. It is actually a laser afterall. And though certainly not revolutionary I put them in the family with bagged lettuce – a real “no duh, why didn’t I think of it” gadget. Something that every house needs.

Get-A-Way Driver Pocket Tool

I would suppose that every one of us has an amount of geekery within – the only thing is, just what degree of a geek would that be? The thing about guys is, most of us would want to have our fair share of power tools to play with, and it is always nice to fantasize that we can be a MacGuyver to a damsel in distress out there from one time to another. If you have ever wished to carry a load of tools right in your pocket without having it look to sport an unsightly bulge, then chances are the $19.99 Get-A-Way Driver Pocket Tool would be just the ticket.

It is able to carry tons of functions on a small tool, and is great for around-the-house or on-the-go folks, sporting dozens of everyday uses. You can use it as a screwdriver with four standard flat and Phillips hex bits, and it also doubles up as an angle driver, not to mention being a push-button LED flashlight when you need to hunt down zombies in your basement, while opening up oxygen bottles when the need arises. Tipping the scales at under two ounces, if there is a portable tool you’ve ever wanted, this is it.

Air Mail Launcher

You know, sometimes working in an office with nothing but row after row of cubicles can get rather stifling. Back in the days where computers were not commonplace, and there was no such thing as a network (Intranet or Internet), sending one message to another person in the quickest way within the same office block would be through the phone’s extension line. The thing is, you will need to actually open your mouth and talk, and sometimes, some facts discussed over might be denied or misunderstood later on – with no black and white backing it up. This is why e-mail has proven to be the more convenient and formal form of communication, where folks are more careful with what they write because there is proof from the horse’s mouth afterwards.

Since all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, make sure your office does not consist of only working Jacks. Let your hair down sometimes as the department head, and you will see faces brighten up all across the floor. The $12.99 Air Mail Launcher is definitely one way of doing so, as it allows you to literally send your important message flying across the room without having to leave your chair. All you need to do is write a note on a sheet of the mail themed notes, crumple it and place it on the catapult, sending it flying towards the intended target. It will definitely take some practice to send it as close as possible to your target, although do bear in mind that its range is limited to just 15 feet.

Powered Pumice Stone – Not Your Mama’s Foot File

Our hands and feet give us away. Do we care for ourselves, are we older than we say? Have we worked hard all our lives, or been pampered? I guess because it’s a habit of mine to check peoples grooming, I tend to be a frequent mani-pedi person, and frankly that gets expensive, but if I want baby soft heels, to the salon I go.

Well our friends over at Hammacher Schlemmer may have an at home heel buffing option that might actually be worth the bucks. The Powered Pumice Stone, designed to remove the most hardcore dry skin and calluses from your otherwise pretty paws, the Powered Pumice Stone is actually a micro-mineral roller that spins at about 1800 RPM’s grinding down whatever thickened heel skin you have allowed your body to build up. Ew.

It looks a bit like an electric razor and comes with 2 different pumice rollers, a coarse one and one that’s extra coarse, yeah… you already know if you need that one. I look at it this way, no matter how bad you’re looking under those socks, you can get your feet ship shape by springtime. The Pumice Stone is powered by 2 AA batteries and only weighs around 6 ounces. So be good to your feet and get yours at Hammacher.com for only around 50 bucks, additional rollers are extra.

Backpack Vacuum makes at least one house chore easier on the back

While a vacuum cleaner is meant to make our lives easier, as it sucks up all of those nasty settlements of dust bunnies around the home, sometimes, all the bending down and squatting while getting up in a repetitive manner to target those hard to reach places can do a number to your back. Which is why instead of bending down or leaning forward, picking up the vacuum cleaner itself from one room to another, the $199.95 Backpack Vacuum, as it is called, will remain nicely on your back to make you into a dust bustin’ Ninja Turtle lookalike.

You basically wear the Backpack Vacuum like a regular backpack, where it is lightweight in nature (tipping the scales at around 7.5 pounds) so that your back will not be strained, where it will remain flushed against your body so that it delivers optimal mobility as you slip into tight corners and access all the different areas and spaces which require cleaning. The inclusion of soft padding ensures that extra cushioning is delivered to the back, while adjustable shoulder straps pave the way for a comfortable fit. Colonies of dust bunnies will be no match for its powerful 800-watt motor, where a HEPA filter removes allergens to boot. Each purchase comes with a handy half dozen cleaning tools, two extension wands, mesh storage bag for accessories, and disposable paper and reusable fabric bags.

Western Digital My Net Wi-Fi Range Extender, for times when you really need Wi-Fi

I am not quite sure about you, but have you ever ventured to a building where it is a virtual black hole where connectivity is concerned? I am referring to the lack of an Internet connection, even though there does not seem to be anything wrong with the initial layout of the place as your eyes tell you at first glance. Perhaps the wireless router that the organization uses lacks the kind of wireless “punch” to send the signal across, or it is just something as unexplainable as the Bermuda Triangle, but seeing that the former is the far likelier affair, how about bringing in the calvary in the form of the Western Digital My Net Wi-Fi Range Extender?

As its name suggests, the My Net Wi-Fi Range Extender from Western Digital
will cater for those who want to expand their wireless connectivity, be it at home or at the office. Perhaps you own this really vast tract of land and would want to introduce the wonders of Wi-Fi to the entire area, only to realize that the wireless signals fall within the four walls of your home, leaving you to go without Internet connectivity on your Wi-Fi only iPad when you are seated under the apple tree right out there in the garden. The My Net Wi-Fi Range Extender should be able to get the job done on your behalf, where it is tipped to deliver faster, stronger and more reliable wireless network coverage to Wi-Fi enabled devices.

Just what is the trade secret of the My Net Wi-Fi Range Extender that allows it to perform seeming miracles? For starters, it will rely on a 3×3 multiple input, multiple output (MIMO) antenna array design, which is definitely different from the 2×2 design that is found in majority of the other devices in the same market segment. This particular engineering design will allow customers to significantly extend the Wi-Fi signal from their existing routers or gateways, translating to the ability to enjoy HD streaming movies, online gaming and video calls in remote areas of the home without compromising on speedy wireless-N speeds where possible. Not only that, the My Net Wi-Fi Range Extender will also boast of a Gigabit Ethernet port so that your wired-only entertainment devices will also be able to get a piece of the action.

Expect to fork out $89.99 for the My Net Wi-Fi Range Extender, which does sound cheaper than remodeling your home and getting rid of some concrete beams and walls to let the Wi-Fi signal waft through.

A Better Way to Suck

Remember the first Dustbuster you saw? Whoa! Crazy! A small vacuum! Black & Decker made their gadget vacuum a household term. The portability and power made it a necessity for quick spills, cleaning the car and sucking up dirt just about anywhere. Yet there are some things the classic DustBuster could not ‘bust’. So Black & Decker went to the drawing board and is taking the DustBuster to an entirely new level once again.

Meet the Black & Decker BDH2000FL, a.k.a. “the Flex.” The unit contains a 20-volt Lithium Ion battery for longer life. The 4 foot flexible hose means it gets into many nooks and crannies its predecessors could not. The Flex comes with special attachments too, including one specifically for pet hair. Between the strong suction and the special attachment, dogs and cats can shed all they want. Like old school DustBusters the Flex is bagless and the filter is washable. It weighs just 3.8lbs too, so you can easily carry it to the messes.  At $149.99 on Amazon.com you may be shocked. But for the functional design, innovative attachments and  Black & Decker quality, including a 3 year warranty, the Flex should be able to handle anything that comes its way and easily justify the investment.
