Facebook responds to Home privacy concerns, specifies what it will and won’t know

Some of the discussion about Facebook Home since its debut yesterday has related to concerns that it gives the social network too much access to user’s information, and now Facebook has responded. Its blog post specifies that Home is subject to the same controls as everything else in a user’s Facebook account. It states that Facebook will not track user’s location any differently than the existing app, and while it could see what apps are launched, it can’t observe what actions are taken within them beyond the already existing Facebook API hooks. As far as information that is collected, it will have a list of apps that are in the Home launcher, and tracks data including which apps are responsible for notification, which is kept identifiable for up to 90 days.

Samsung Opening ‘Experience’ Shops Within Best Buy Starting April 8

Samsung Opening Experience Shops Within Best Buy Starting April 8

Just last week, Samsung announced it is partnering with Best Buy to inject smaller shops inside of their stores to help educate shoppers of Samsung’s products, although at this point, we’re pretty sure you’re very familiar with the company and their offerings in the tech space. It looks as though Samsung wasted no time getting them set up as the company announced their stores inside of Best Buy will be opening as soon as April 8.

The Samsung mini-stores will showcase and demonstrate its line of consumer products that include smartphones, tablets and televisions. A total of 500 Samsung Experience shops will take approximately 460 square feet of select Best Buy retail stores. These stores will be staffed by Samsung employees who will be promoting the upcoming Galaxy S4. Samsung plans for a total of 1,000 Experience shops to be opened in Best Buy stores by June. (more…)

EPIX Launches On PS3, PS Plus Subscribers Get A Free Movie Every Week

At the beginning of 2013, Sony announced it would be welcoming EPIX into its stable of video streaming applications for both its PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita. It took nearly three months since their original announcement, but EPIX is finally available on the PlayStation 3 starting today.

EPIX, just like other premium cable channels, will require you to be a subscriber of its service in order for you to get everything it has to offer. PSN users are able to check out EPIX for free through a 14-day trial, although EPIX will be offering a new movie for free to PlayStation Plus subscribers, regardless if they’re a subscriber to their video service or not. If you’ve been on the fence whether to be a PS Plus member or not, now would be a pretty good time to sign up for the service. (more…)

Panasonic LED Clip Lights Helps You Dry Your Clothes

Panasonic LED Clip Lights Helps You Dry Your ClothesThese days, it is all about convergence devices as well as ideas, and when it comes to the humble clothes clip, I guess you can more or less say that the design could not be improved further. Or could it? Apparently so, as evident by the folks over at Panasonic of Japan, having unveiled the hands-free LED clip light BF-AF20P which will arrive in different pleasing colors. The Panasonic BF-AF20P LED light will not only help you light up your path or the immediate area (although do not expect it to flood the entire area), it also doubles up as a clothes clip which comes in handy to dry clothes.

The light’s angle can be also adjusted, and since it has the task of helping you keep those wet clothes on a clothesline, a semblance of waterproof capability is more than welcome, and that is exactly what the LED clip light BF-AF20P is – splash-proof. Running on a couple of CR2032 button cell batteries, the LED light will measure 35mm × 34mm × 50mm, tipping the scales at approximately 19 grams, battery included. Out later this May, pricing details will be announced in due time.

This California Cypress Wood LED Lamp Is A Sight To Behold

This California Cypress Wood LED Lamp Is A Sight To BeholdWhile lighting in our homes serve as a way to illuminate, other times lights can be used for decorative purposes, as well as to set the mood. If you’re looking for a unique lamp for your home, this lamp made by Paul Foeckler at Split Grain might be of interest to you. As you can see in the photo above, this lamp is by no means conventional and we doubt that you would be using it for a bedside reading lamp, but if you’re in the market for a conversational piece, we think this might get the job done. Made from pieces of California cypress trees, it features a white LED lamp and is carved entirely handmade, clocking in over 50 hours just to complete this piece. It looks pretty awesome and will help warmth to a room, but unfortunately there is only one unit available and it will cost you a whopping $750. If you’d like to check out more photos or read more about this lamp sculpture, head on over to Foeckler’s Etsy page for the details.

Smart Herb Garden Grows Herbs, Vegetables Without Sun Or Soil

Being able to grow a garden if you’re a shut-in is pretty much impossible considering how much light plants need on a regular basis. But a new garden called the Smart Herb Garden may allow those of you who completely shun the daylight to finally be able to grow those “herbs” you’ve been dying to have.

The Smart Herb Garden uses an LED growing lamp to grow your herbs and a few select vegetables without any need for that dastardly sun. All you need to do is snap in your plant cartridges, fill in the water reservoir, and sit back to have the Smart Herb Garden do all of the actual growing for you. The garden doesn’t even use soil as it uses a nanotech material that’s been specifically engineered to supply the plant’s roots with the amount of oxygen, water and other nutrients it needs to grown. Walmart Considers Using In Store Customers To Deliver Online Shoppers Packages

Purchasing goods online has become the shopping method many people prefer these days as making a trip down to a store seems to be more of a hassle than what it’s worth. I know my UPS and FedEx drivers extremely well since I receive packages on a regular basis, but Walmart is considering having its customers deliver packages to its online shoppers.

The process, which is a form of “crowd-sourcing,” is being considered as a way for Walmart to better compete with Amazon’s shipping methods. Chief executive of Walmart.com Joel Anderson believes in a crowd-sourced future for its online shipping orders, which is currently carried out by either FedEx or its own deliver trucks. (more…)

V12-Inspired Espresso Volce Coffee Maker Is A Work Of Art

V12 Inspired Espresso Volce Coffee Maker Is A Work Of ArtEspresso machines come in shapes and sizes, ranging from small ones meant to brew a single cup of coffee, to the larger ones usually designed for cafes and restaurants in mind where multiple shots of espresso need to be prepared at once. Well if you’re looking for an espresso machine but none of the ones you’ve seen seem to appeal to you, then perhaps the Espresso Volce could be of interest to you. As you can see in the image above, it has been designed to resemble a V12 engine.

It is made from premium quality materials, such as titanium, magnesium and aluminum and apparently production is limited to 500 units, meaning that not only is the Espresso Volce rare, but it will cost you a fair amount too, even more so considering that espresso machines aren’t cheap to begin with. No word on how much this will cost, but it’s safe to say that you should be prepared to max out your credit limit if you want to get your hands on it.

Google Engineers Develop System That Lets You Water Your Lawn From A Smartphone

Its amazing what we can do with smartphones these days. A couple of Google engineers have developed an open source system that lets users water their lawns from the luxury of their smartphones. Basically the system can control a home irrigation system wirelessly from the device. Called the Irrduino Project, it was developed by J.J Barrons and Joe Fernandez.

The system has been created using a number of technologies such as Android, Ardiuno, Python, Dart and the Google App Engine. At the core there’s an Arduino microcontroller which allows remote control of irrigation zones at a house. Communications take place over Ethernet and standard html requests, which basically means that the custom home irrigation system can be controlled from anywhere in the world. In a nutshell, one can water their lawn from anywhere they might be, all they need is a web browser and internet. The source code has been made available to the public, it can be found at http://bit.ly/waterjoeslawn. How many of you would fancy being able to water your lawns using smartphones, from any part of the globe?
