HBO CEO Teases HBO Go-Only Subscription Service

HBO CEO Teases HBO Go Only Subscription Service

It’s undeniable one of the most popular premium cable channels to offer an online streaming video service is HBO with its HBO Go service. HBO Go allows you to not only watch recently aired shows, sometimes, being able to watch them online minutes after they’ve aired, but also catch up on complete seasons of older shows, movies and specials. Unfortunately, the only way to view HBO Go is if you’re an HBO subscriber, but that may soon change.

According to Reuters, chief executive at HBO Richard Plepler recently made some interesting comments regarding the evolution of the company’s HBO Go service at a recent premier for Game of Thrones’ third season. ”Right now we have the right model,” Plepler told Reuters. “Maybe HBO GO, with our broadband partners, could evolve.” This, of course, means the company has heard our cries for a streaming-only option for HBO Go as paying a full subscription to be able to use the service seems a little redundant. Samsung Evolution Kit Upgrades Your 2012 Smart TV In May For $300
At CES 2013, Samsung announced its Evolution Kit that would upgrade your 2012 Smart TV into a 2013 Smart TV as it’ll have an improved CPU, memory and GPU which allows you to experience faster speeds in a number of ways. The announcement of the Evolution Kit came without a release date or a price, both of which were confirmed today at a media event in New York City.

The Samsung Evolution Kit will be launched in May and will retail for $299.99, which is a bit pricey, but considering it’ll save you the trouble of spending over $1000 to upgrade your 2012 Samsung Smart TV, then we can see how it might be priced just right as it can add additional years to your current HDTV.

The Evolution Kit not only allows 2012 Smart TVs to receive an updated 2013 Smart Hub, but it will also come with a Samsung Smart Touch remote which also allows you to interact with your Smart TV in a number of ways such as voice and gesture controls. Samsung’s Smart Remote alone would probably cost over $100, so that $299.99 price point for the Evolution Kit is starting to look a little bit better.

Google Fiber Expanded To A New City For The First Time

Google announced late last year it would be broadening the horizons of its Google Fiber network. Unfortunately, it probably wouldn’t be in your neck of the woods, that is, unless you currently live in Kansas City or the additional five neighborhoods the company announced it would begin rolling out Google Fiber to this year.

Google announced the first neighborhood within the Kansas City area to receive an expansion of Google Fiber service is Olathe, Kansas as earlier this week, the Olathe City Council approved of the expansion. The Google Fiber expansion may be crawling at this point, but Google believes Olathe is a worthy addition as they believe the city fits the mold of locations that will take advantage of their service. ABC Developing Live Streaming App Which You Can Watch Anywhere

ABC, or the channel with Dancing with the Stars and Shark Tank as most people know it as these days, is reportedly working on a mobile application that would deliver a live stream of its TV programming. If it turns out to be true and ABC does deliver an application that would live stream its TV programming, it would be the first US broadcaster to do so, making it automatically cooler than FOX, NBC and CBS.

The live-streaming application would allow its users to watch ABC anywhere they go as long as they have an Internet connection, which already makes it a better deal than the apps produced by cable TV companies as they only allow you to watch live-streaming broadcasts while connected to your home wireless network. ABC’s live-streaming app would only be available to subscribers, which means those of you who watch the channel over-the-air will be out of luck. (more…)

Panasonic To Bail Out From Plasma Business?

Panasonic To Bail Out From Plasma Business?Panasonic of Japan is not exactly going through the best of times at this point in time, as the TV business, especially on the Japanese side of things, do not seem to favor them, as the South Koreans, namely Samsung and LG, have already usurped them for a fair number of years already. Well, we now have word that Panasonic of Japan could very well consider exiting the plasma TV stage as part of a downsizing of its TV business over the coming three years, beginning from fiscal year 2014 onwards.

Panasonic has already started to sell off their assets, where among them include real estate, in an effort to strengthen its financial position. Back when Panasonic’s TV business was at its peak, it managed to generate sales of over 1 trillion yen ($10.5 billion), and they have projected that they will be earning less than 50% of that amount when 2015/2016 rolls around. A Panasonic spokesperson said, “We are considering a number of options regarding our TV business. But nothing has been decided yet.” Do you think that other TV manufacturers will follow the footsteps of Panasonic where plasma TVs are concerned?

Sony HDTVs With Quantum Dot Technology Start To ShipAt each iteration of CES, it would not be complete if there were not rows of the latest generation TVs to wow the masses. It just works somehow, especially when you have plenty of high definition material to dazzle the viewers and attendees. Sony’s booth at CES 2013 was not short on eye candy either, where their HDTV line up saw the introduction of features such as NFC, MHL and Miracast for select models, with the high end W900A model being the first that will utilize its Quantum Dot technology that works in tandem with edge LED lighting.

Sony decided to revive the Triluminos brand name for this particular technology, where they claim that it is capable of delivering a wider color gamut without inflating prices to sky high levels. It seems that in the lower range W- and R- lines, only the KDL-W900A will come equipped with Triluminos to keep your eyes excited. That model will come with an extra long internal speaker duct that tous improved sound and standard NFC remote, with the 55-inch model retailing for $3,299 a pop. Time to start saving up, no?

Philips DesignLine TV Blends Right In

Philips DesignLine TV Blends Right InPhilips must be thinking out of the box as they do not seem to be too hot and bothered by Ultra HDTV sets that rolled off from the manufacturing lines of its rivals, but rather, would want to concentrate on beautifying your home by blending in their offerings with the rest of your abode. Case in point, Philips’ latest 46-inch and 55-inch DesignLine TVs that comprise of a single sheet of glass, and these will lean against your wall at an angle. When placed at the optimal viewing angle, Philips claims that you will have your eyes totally blown away.

According to Philips’ senior designer Frank Rettenbacher, “We really wanted to move away from the current product language used in TV design. We wanted to create a single sheet of glass, leaning very casually against the wall — without a frame, without a neck and a base.” Do you agree with Frank’s assessment that this will work? We think that the jury is still out on this one, and it will be rather challenging to predict just how well the DesignLine TVs will perform in the market. What do you think? Pricing details have yet to be determined, but something tells me that they ain’t gonna come cheap.

TiVo Mini Extends Set Top Box To Additional Rooms For $99

If you take your DVR serious, you may have sprung for a TiVo instead of trusting your TV-watching needs to your cable or satellite provider. Up until this point, if you wanted additional TiVos in your home, you had to purchase additional units, which could be quite costly, especially if it’s a room you only occasionally watch TV on. TiVo is announcing a new accessory to its main set-top-box that will make those infrequently used rooms less costly to have a TiVo in.

The TiVo Mini will allow current TiVo owners to access applications and use their existing DVRs to watch live TV and recorded shows in additional rooms for an additional $5.99 a month, or through a one-time service payment of $249.98. Those prices are in addition to the actual price of the TiVo Mini, which costs $99. Mini is key here as the device measures in at 6.1 inches wide and 1.3 inches tall making it quite small. (more…)

The Ube WiFi Smart Dimmer Will Control Your Lights And Your Sprinkler System As Well

The Ube WiFi Smart Dimmer Will Control Your Lights And Your Sprinkler System As WellFor most of us, entering the house and turning on the lights involves a flick of a switch. Turning on another light is another switch, the fan, the air-con and so on. However with home automation starting to catch on, we wouldn’t be surprised if one day the majority of us lived in homes where our gestures could control more than one gadget from a single switch, and that’s what the Ube WiFi Smart Dimmer is hoping to accomplish. Making an appearance at SXSW, its creators have announced an upgraded version of its Smart Dimmer that will be able to control other smart devices at home.

As it stands, the Smart Dimmer does exactly as its name implies, which is adjust the lighting in your home by swiping on the touchpad. A single swipe turns your lights on/off, while using two fingers will adjust multiple lights. Now no longer content with merely adjusting the lighting in homes, the updated version of the Smart Dimmer will be able to control other smart devices, such as a smart water sprinkler simply by swiping the letter “W”, or enabling/disabling your home alarm by tracing the letter “A” on its surface. No word on when this updated version will be released, but for those interested in its current iteration can head on over to its Kickstarter page for the details.

Solar-Powered Death Ray

I suppose when your neighbors see this unique DIY machine in your backyard in action, one of the first few things they would do is be best buddies with you, asking you to forgive them of all the wrong that they have done in the past, right after hollering out to their wife, “That thing’s operational!” in homage to Star Wars. It does not matter if your objective is to melt metal, ignite some gasoline, hold a BBQ, or simply to burn some hotdogs, the video above should be able to explain it all. After all, doesn’t a single picture tell a thousand words?

Grant Thompson is the one behind this idea, using his 13-year old Toshiba 50-inch flat screen TV as the basis for his solar-powered death ray. The TV itself was mutilated in a sense, where the plastic sheet underneath layers of wires and bits was the treasure he was looking for, having hoisted it onto a wooden frame before using it to focus the sun’s ray’s in a miniscule point, similar in principle to that of a magnifying glass, capable of letting that spot hit a whopping 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Now that’s power!
