Valve’s Steam Big Picture Goes Live

Big Picture is Steam’s user interface (UI) that is designed to work well on big displays/televisions. It is a format that has challenged many other apps, but Valve is determined to get it right. The demo looks really nice and Big Picture seems really well thought-out for typical things that people bump into when using large displays. (more…)

Telephoto Kitchen Timer

In life, you can be darned good at what you do, but it you lack focus, all of that skill will not amount to much, really. Well, the $13.99 Telephoto Kitchen Timer does seem to put things into focus, reminding you to make sure that the stove is on, and it is extremely dangerous to leave a fire unattended. Well, you might be a fantastic multi-tasker, but there is no harm done in having a device that helps remind us that it is time to attend to the chicken so that it does not end up overcooked, all the while you keep on stirring the porridge.

Not only that, it is also a subtle reminder that you should, if time and opportunity permits, to be able grab a DSLR nearby and shoot a few photos of what’s cookin’ (even if you are not The Rock). In order to activate the Telephoto Kitchen Timer, all you need to do is twist the base in order for the red arrow to pass the 55 minutes mark, then twist the very same arrow back to mark your desired time. This will result in you creating more or less the perfect meal each time.

Wireless Windows Sensors May Guarantee Better Intrusion Detection

Window sensors are nothing new. Since long, they have been employed on windows to detect any intrusion. However, conventionally, such sensors come with cables. And that essentially means one could cut the cables or somehow mess with them to compromise the security provided by such sensors.

The new wireless window sensors, which have been developed at the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS, quite effectively thwart such problems. As the name suggests, these window sensors are free from the hassle of any cables. Moreover, they are tiny in size and virtually undetectable. (more…)

3M AIR and FLEX LED lighting solutions are the bomb

You can say that a company like 3M is probably as flexible as these two LED lighting solutions from them – the AIR and the FLEX. First introduced to the world recently by 3M Architectural Markets (which incidentally is the company’s interior products division), AIR and FLEX embodies their ongoing commitment to develop LED and OLED lighting solutions. After all, the LED and OLED market do seem to experience encouraging growth year-on-year, paving the way for an exciting yet challenging market for interior and lighting designers. For starters, AIR comes across as a lightweight hoop fixture that is available in 3′, 5′ and 7′ diameters, in addition to having a vast array of color outputs to choose from. The LED lights are also dimmable and replaceable, so fret not if some of your brat pack decides to play football at home and break one of the LED lights.

As for FLEX, this is a linear modular lighting system which can be curved along walls or ceilings – it is your choice. The system is fully customizable, and it is made out of a lightweight aluminum enclosure that boasts of a slender profile of just 1.72” thin. Entertainment establishments like nightclubs would definitely find practical use for the AIR and FLEX LED lights.

LG 84-inch Ultra Definition TV (LG UD 84LM9600) now available in the US

LG Electronics has just announced that their monstrous 84-inch Ultra Definition LED TV is available to the general market Stateside, carrying a whopping screen resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels which allows it to live up to its impressive size. We are talking about having four times the level of detail (equivalent to 8 million pixels thereabouts) found in a Full HD resolution TV. Of course, “4K” content has yet to be readily available, so you can be proud to say that this is one TV which will not get obsolete the moment you unbox it in your living room.

Still, the 84-inch behemoth from LG will carry the South Korean company’s proprietary Resolution Upscaler Plus which is capable of delivering a higher level detail from current HD/SD external sources. The asking price of the LG UD 84LM9600? We are looking at an October release date with a price that can buy you a decent, brand-new family sedan – $19,999.99. Of course, there is only one other competitor out there for the LG UD 84LM9600, and that would be the Sony XBR-84X900 4K LED TV. [Press Release]

Evangelion humidifier relies on steam in design

Are you a fan of the Evangelion series – story, characters and all? If you have answered in the affirmative, then here is a wee bit of news that might just capture your attention. Known as the Evangelion humidifier (no prizes for guessing just what this puppy is able to churn out), it does roll back the years and return you to memories of the scene where the Nerv building is destroyed by the Third Children using Eva 01. The humidifier works great behind the scenes, as it actually relies on the steam that rises up to throw in a touch of realism in this classic Evangelion scene.

Not only will your skin get enough moisture when you sleep at night while leaving the Evangelion humidifier on, there is also a combination of lights located right around the base which offers some light in pitch black darkness, while the tip can be used as a simple nightlight to fend off monsters underneath the bed. The Evangelion humidifier seems slated for a November release, with a price tag that ought to hover around the $200 after conversion.

Floating bed is not of the supernatural

If you find it difficult to get your kids to bed, perhaps it is time to try something novel. Something as different as say, a floating bed? Now, this does sound a wee bit kinky considering how we are referring to childrens’ beds here, but basically, this floating bed has a far more practical use – when in need of space, you can stash it right into the ceiling, now how about that? All right, so this bed does not float on some sort of mag-lev technology, but rather, it remains suspended as though it hangs by a thin linen curtain as seen above, although it will not be too far a stretch of one’s imagination that there are unseen metal wires or rods behind the scenes here.

Electricity seems to be the prime antagonist in retracting the bed into the ceiling directly, and once there, it will be held in place, only to play out its secondary role – functioning as a decorative piece of ceiling artwork while clearing up a whole lot of space in that particular room. This “floating” bed should enter mass production sometime down the road, but I do hope it is safe enough to remain tucked in the ceiling for months on end!

Magic carpet as a fall prevention measure?

When we talk about a magic carpet, this is normally confined to fairy tales somewhere in Arabia, more often than not involving an exotic princess and a streetwise boy who has the assistance of a genie in a lamp to boot. Well, the magic carpet that we are talking about today is literally more down to earth, where it can detect almost immediately just when someone has fallen as well as predict mobility issues, thanks to the good scientists over at the University of Manchester. The clever implementation of plastic optical fibres that are laid on the underlay of a carpet allows it to bend whenever anyone treads on it, mapping out one’s walking patterns in real-time.

Small electronics which are located at the edges act will function as sensors, relaying all signals to a computer which can then be analyzed, depicting the footprint while identifying gradual and subtle changes in walking behaviour, including a sudden incident like a trip or fall. Not only that, this magic carpet will be able to show whenever there is a pattern of steady deterioration or change in walking habits, which might point towards a fall. (more…)
