HBO says no to Netflix partnership

NetflixIf you’re waiting to watch TV series like True Blood, Entourage or Game of Thrones on Netflix, you’d better stop holding your breath. On Tuesday, Netflix raised the possibility of teaming up with HBO in a letter to its shareholders. However, before any discussions have even begun – it looks like that won’t be happening anytime soon. HBO announced today that they are in no discussions and have no plans to work with Netflix.

Seeing how HBO’s own streaming service, HBO GO is a direct competitor to Netflix, it was an unlikely partnership in the first place. But I guess one could always hope? It looks like TV viewers who want to stream shows like Girls or The Sopranos will still have to maintain their HBO GO subscription or obtain them in another way. Any of you upset about not having HBO movies and TV shows on Netflix?

One-Sqm-House is a unique addition to any city

Just when you thought that the city which you live in is too congested and more needs to be done by the government to provide affordable housing to the masses, here comes what is dubbed as the “One-Sqm-House”, which is actually the brainchild of Van Bo Le-Mentzel. Van Bo Le-Mentzel is a long-time Berlin resident, and architect, having dreamed up this unique house which was described by Van himself as “no one other than I, myself, can decide what happens with this one square meter of mine in the world. It’s the only square meter in the world where I can decide what direction the window looks in, what direction the door opens in, what neighbors I have.”

This young architect has worked with the BMW Guggenheim Lab, so that he is able to share his vision for a tiny home with the rest of the world. Le-Mentzel has already invited all Berliners to come and assist in building as many One-Sqm-Houses as possible, where he offered to pay for the bill of materials for those who are less fortunate, as long as these people gave permission to the Lab to rent them out until the end of July. Those who are interested in renting out the One-Sqm-House will see it listed on Airbnb for €1 per night, although when the experiment comes to a conclusion on July 29th, the builders are able to return and pick up their “babies.”

Nexus Q in stock at the Google Play Store

Nexus QThe Nexus Q was unveiled at this year’s Google I/O conference, and while it’s pretty limited with what it can do right out of the box, it still has some appeal due to its hackability. Well, if you’re one of those curious people who want to pick up one to play around with, you’re in luck. According to reports online, the Nexus Q is now in stock at the Google Play Store and can be delivered to you in 3-5 business days. It’s not going to be cheap at $299, but its made in the USA label should justify the costs.

The Nexus 7 tablet on the other hand remains out of stock – will the Nexus Q sell out just as quickly? I guess only time will tell. In the meantime, head over to the Google Play Store if you’d like to purchase a Nexus Q.

Depression link with late night TV/computer sessions

“Just one more minute…,” you mutter to yourself as you are busy trying out Blizzard’s latest Diablo 3 exploit that sees you make the most out of your barbarian character. Well, that solitary minute magically extends itself into 10, and eventually, a full hour has passed by, and you are nowhere near being sleepy. Instead, you decided to take a break from the computer, whip up a sandwich from the kitchen, and turn on the TV to see what’s happening in the late night news.

Researchers claim that this particular lifestyle is not to be recommended at all – as sitting in front of a computer or TV screen into the wee hours of the morning might actually increase your chances of ending up depressed. The very same US scientists from the Ohio State University Medical Center actually exposed hamsters to dim light at night, managing to single out changes in behavior as well as the hamsters’ brains showing shockingly striking similarities to symptoms that are commonly found in depressed people.

If you happen to living out this particularly unhealthy lifestyle, there is hope. The research team mentioned that “people who stay up late in front of the television and computer may be able to undo some of the harmful effects just by going back to a regular light-dark cycle and minimizing their exposure to artificial light at night.”

Toshiba knows that there are different kinds of users when it comes to the world of consumer electronics, which is why where the TV market is concerned, they have decided to position their most recent addition to the Regza family as an entry level device. Known as the Toshiba Regza Dynamic 40S5, it will clearly target the entry level market by offering adequate bang for your hard earned buck in the form of a 40” LED backlit TV. If your wallet is on a diet, fret not – after all, this particular bad boy is going for a mere 85,000 yen, which translates to roughly $1,090.

As for the features found in the Regza Dynamic 40S5, you can expect to enjoy the aforementioned 40” LED backlit panel in addition to a 5,100,000 dynamic contrast, Toshiba’s very own Regza Engine, USB hard drive recording capability, a 10W x 2ch speaker setting, and a Digital TV Tuner. Since it walks on the budget side of things, you can forget about add-ons such as DLNA support and 3D capability.

Camitool electric toilet paper dispenser lets you go hands-free

Have you noticed how things seem to get more and more automated these days? Even the humble toilet has gotten all the more automated than ever before. We have for a long time had an automatic flush at the urinal and porcelain throne, an automatic soap dispenser, an automatic tap, so why not an automatic toilet paper dispenser? Automatic paper tower dispensers are dime a dozen, but this is the first time I have come across a device that does the same for toilet paper – useful after you have laid a particularly nasty bunch of logs. Developed by Shikoku, it will fold and cut toilet paper automatically, where you can then take it without ever having to touch the dispenser.

This is clearly a higher level of personal hygiene in public places than ever before. What next, automatic sliding doors in cubicles, as well as automatic toilet seats that raise or lower themselves, depending on whether you are about to sit on it or have finished your “business”? Right now, Shikoku’s Camitool sees action in hospitals and in public buildings in Kagawa. It works with just about all brands of toilet paper in the market.

NBC and Panasonic to offer London 2012 Olympics in High Definition 3D broadcast

This summer’s main sporting event that will be watched by billions around the world would be the London 2012 Olympics, and thanks to the advancements made in technology, we have since moved on from High Definition broadcasting to 3D High Definition live streams. This will be made available to nearly 80% of US TV households in the US thanks to the joint efforts of NBC Olympics and Panasonic, where they will work hand in hand with AT&T, Cablevision, Comcast, Cox Communications, DirecTV, Time Warner Cable and Verizon amongst other cable, satellite and telco providers to deliver 3D Olympic Games coverage right to your very doorstep.

Later this month, the 3D broadcast of the games can be accessed by subscribers of MVPD’s (multichannel video programming distributors) who as of press time, make up nearly 80% of US TV households. This daily 3D programming is not live though, but rather, will be shown on next-day delay. Approximately 242 hours of the 3D broadcasts are said to be distributed through the Media Center. I cannot wait for the day when live 3D broadcast of sporting events will happen in Full High Definition glory on such a global scale though, leading us to ask the question – what’s next after that? LG’s 84-inch 4K HDTV now on sale – limited quantities available

LG does seem serious on peddling their massive, massive 84-inch ultra-definition 4K HDTV that was first spotted at CES earlier this year. It boasts a stunning level of resolution – we are talking about 3,840 x 2,160 (UHDTV) pixels here, where it is capable of maintaining a full 1080p picture for 3D movies, and this happens even as you use the LG’s FPR Cinema 3D passive glasses technology. Not only that, this particular TV will come with a standard range of Smart TV features. Well, LG would by no means want to be left behind in Samsung’s wake, as the latter has just announced the 75-inch ES9000 that carries some Angry Birds goodness along with it.    One thing is for sure though – this bad boy is not going to come cheap by any means, so you might want to start saving up for one like since yesterday!
