2015 Acura NSX concept revealed at NAIAS 2013

Today at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan, Honda officially unveiled the 2015 Acura NSX. It’s the company’s second try at an NSX concept, after they revealed the 2012 NSX concept at last year’s show. This new model looks relatively the same overall, with just a few minor changes coming in 2015.

2015-acura-nsx

The 2015 NSX Concept maintains its low and wide stance that we saw last year, and the car is highlighted by clean, modern, smooth, and simple surfacing, with edgy details that communicate a supercar feel and attitude. The overall shape reminds us of Audi’s own R8 supercar, with the slanted rear that goes all the way back to the tail.

Acura NSX production ended in 2005, and it’s seen a long history that goes back to 1990, when the first-year NSX was released. The 2015 model will feature a mid-mounted V6 engine with a seven-speed manual transmission. The car will also feature three electric motors that will work together to help drive all four wheels, and to assist with acceleration and braking.

This “Sports Hybrid AWD system” is expected to deliver V8 performance with “better-than-four-cylinder” fuel economy. Indeed, a three-motor, mid-engine supercar sounds like the ideal machine for a brand attempting to distinguish itself as a luxury and performance company without waste or excess. As far as price goes, there’s no set cost yet, but Acura says it will cost more than the Nissan GT-R, which already starts shy of $100,000.

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: November 30, 2012

Welcome to Friday evening everyone! Not only is this the beginning of the weekend, but it’s also the last day of November. Tomorrow December begins, and the holiday rush will soon be in full swing. How about we all prepare with a recap of the news from the final day of the month? Today Verizon announced that it will soon be sending out Jelly Bean updates to the Motorola DROID RAZR HD and the RAZR MAXX HD, so if you own one of those phones, be on the lookout for an update next week. Apple launched its new iMac today, and we learned that the company will be bringing the iPad Mini to China on December 6, with the iPhone 5 to follow a week after.

Honda unveiled an updated 2013 Civic at the Los Angeles Car Show today, while new user-configurable gauges were shown off for the Cadillac XTS. According to benchmark tests, it turns out that the new iMac is able to boast a 25% performance boost over last year’s model, and it seems that Apple is now offering variable-cost iTunes gift cards at retailers, though they require that you load at least $15 onto them.

We heard rumors earlier today that claim the next Xbox could launch in time for Christmas 2013, and Sony has filed an interesting new patent for a hybrid Move/Dualshock controller that splits in half. A new report from comScore shows that Samsung and Apple continue to dominate the smartphone space, while we learned that Google Play revenue has risen 300% though the App Store still sells more. Nokia is hunting for a Linux engineer, which has the Android community excited, and it appears that ASUS is gearing up to undercut the Nexus 7 with a tablet that costs only $99.

The Humble THQ Bundle has pulled in more than $2 million in just one day, and Xbox Live Gold has gone free for this weekend only. There’s a new PS Vita bundle on the way to the United States, and Facebook has rolled out its new Photo Sync feature for its mobile app. Finally tonight, Chris Burns delivers his review of the Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9. That does it for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up, we hope you enjoy the weekend folks!

Honda's HEARBO robot can separate and locate four sound sources at once (video)

Robots are already adept at all manner of things, from hunting to feeling, but over at Honda’s Research Institute, one team is focused on an ability bots aren’t so hot at yet — hearing. Puny humans can quickly deduce the direction of a sound and assess its significance, while also ignoring unimportant background noise. Honda is trying to replicate these traits with HEARBO, a robot with eight microphones hidden in its head. Using its HARK software system, HEARBO can distinguish between and locate the position of up to four unique sound sources simultaneously to within one degree of accuracy. It can also filter out din generated by its own 17 motors with a method called “ego-noise suppression.” HEARBO’s sound localization skills are shown in the first video below, while the second proves it can beat match, dance poorly, and isolate voice commands when music is playing and motors are whirring. The overall goal of Honda’s efforts is to generally advance intelligent speech and sound recognition technology. We can’t help but wonder, however, if bots will just end up using it to pinpoint our screams when the inevitable occurs.

Honda unveils the 2013 CR-Z Sport Hybrid

Hybrid vehicles are typically rather boring cars with the ultimate goal being fuel efficiency. Honda is showing off the new 2013 CR-Z Sport Hybrid coupe that looks much sportier than the traditional hybrid and the CR-Z is a hybrid with a more performance-tuned nature. The 2013 CR-Z Sport Hybrid will go on sale on November 21.

For the 2013 year model, the vehicle gets significant updates for powertrain, styling, and new features. One of the key new features is more power from the new lithium-ion battery pack that improves the performance of the vehicle and its EPA fuel efficiency ratings. The hybrid drivetrain system in the car uses a 1.5-liter four-cylinder 16-valve single overhead cam engine with intelligent Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control. That system allows the engine to produce more power.

The power of the electric motor has been increased to 2013 from 10 kW to 15 kW thanks to a high-voltage lithium-ion battery pack. The CR-Z is now able to deliver a combined peak output of 130 hp at 6000 RPMs and 140 pound-foot of torque for manual transmission versions with CVT models offering 127 pounds-foot of torque.

Despite the extra power, the EPA city/highway/combined efficiency rating is up by one mpg to 36/39/37 mpg for CVT models. Six-speed manual models have ratings of 31/38/34. The vehicle also gets a number of other changes for 2013 including a revised front fascia, 16-inch alloy wheels, a new rear diffuser, a new Plus Sport System, revised interior trim, available two-tone seats, standard Bluetooth, standard rearview camera, and lots more.

Honda’s HEARBO Robot Listens Better Than Most of Us

While more and more devices are beginning to be able to understand what we’re saying, one problem that we face is that not everything that we communicate is in the form of a verbal cue. With that in mind, the roboticists at the Honda Research Institute have been working on a robot that can not only understand words, but other sounds.

hearbo listening robot

HEARBO (the HEAR-ing roBOt) uses a technology called Computational Auditory Scene Analysis to distinguish various sounds from its environment. This allows it to not just pick out verbal communication, but everything from the beep of an alarm clock to the mailman knocking on your front door. It can then use this information to make decisions about what to do.

The specific version of the technology being used for HEARBO is called HARK, an open source library that breaks down the understanding of sounds into three steps: localization, separation and recognition. This allows it to not only distinguish sounds in a noisy location, but exactly where they are coming from. In fact, the technology can nail down the direction that sound is coming from down to 1 degree of accuracy. Currently, the system can distinguish up to four different sounds going on at once, but in theory more microphones could allow it to handle even more sources.

Here’s a short demonstration video showing how the robot can understand what’s going on despite the world’s most annoying alarm clock going off the whole time:

And here’s an example of HEARBO easily distinguishing music from human commands, identifying song attributes, and even dancing a little bit:

So why develop such a robot? The technology could be used for things like robot butlers that could automatically answer the doorbell, or do things like turn off the TV if the kids have been using it for too long.

Honda previews 2013 Civic

Honda has revealed the 2013 Honda Civic Sedan, previewing the new car ahead of its official debut later this month. Promising to be both “more youthful” and “premium” than its predecessor, the 2013 Civic gets bigger front grilles, clear lens corner lights, and sharper hood creases, flowing back to chrome trim across the trunk lid, “jewel-like” rear lights, and honeycomb-mesh diffuser mesh.

There’s matching mesh in the front grille, along with a newly redesigned rear bumper, integrated reflectors, lashings of chrome, and a set of new wheel selections (though so far Honda has only shown us one example). The belt lines have also crisped up, though the airbrushed silver of Honda’s graphics helps emphasize them.

Unfortunately, there the details dry up, and Honda has only provided the two photos of the new Civic. The interior as well as the safety, drivetrain, and other features have also been refreshed, as you’d expect, but we’ll have to wait until November 29 and the Los Angeles Auto Show for all of the information.

One possibility, however, is the car company’s HondaLink cloud-based infotainment system, as will debut on the 2013 Accord. That includes Bluetooth streaming, Pandora internet radio, Facebook text-to-speech, audiobooks, SMS messaging, and personalized restaurant services, all controlled by voice.

HondaJet moves from testing to production

The HondaJet is coming. Finally, after years of waiting, the Honda Aircraft Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Honda Motor Company, is announcing that it will commence production on the HondaJet. At a press conference in Florida, Honda detailed the light jet’s key testing milestones. One of the significant milestones is last year’s series of flight, systems, and structural tests that included crew seat crash tests, speedbrake testing, ultimate load tests, EASA windshield bird strike testing, wind tunnel icing tests, and night lighting testing. Honda Fit She’s target the ladies

Honda, one of the larger automobile manufacturers in the world, has just rolled out a new model that targets ladies, calling it the Honda Fit She’s. Available only in Japan at this point in time with no word on whether the rest of the world will be able to receive this compact ride, the Honda Fit She’s will target nearly 50% of Japanese women who decided to remain out of the work force. According to Honda’s designers, this version of the Honda Fit will be cute enough for adults, sporting a pink exterior, pink stitching on the interior, and shiny pink chrome covers on the dashboard. It would take a whole lot for most males to drive this to work for sure. Heck, even a heart replaces the apostrophe in “She’s” in order to underline Honda’s seriousness to the commitment.

Good thing you can also choose from brown and white if you are a lady who does not like pink – at least brown and white can help complement your eye shadow color, no? Aesthetics are not the only thing with the Honda Fit She’s, as it sports a new kind of windshield which is touted to block up to 99% of UV rays, helping reduce the chances of attaining wrinkles whenever you drive during the daytime. There is also a Plasmacluster AC system that treats the air quality, supposedly improving one’s skin quality as you drive.

Honda sells its millionth hybrid, sits in Toyota's rearview mirror for now

Honda’s hybrid cars just haven’t achieved the same cachet as Toyota’s without a poster child like the Prius to drive demand. Nonetheless, the automaker has something to crow about with word that it has sold over a million hybrids worldwide as of the end of September. The milestone comes almost 13 years after the first Japan-bound Insight changed hands in November 1999, and after a significant expansion that includes more specialized cars like the CR-Z coupe you see here. Americans represent almost a third of the total at 318,000 vehicles that are split mostly between the Insight and the Civic Hybrid. Hitting seven digits gives Honda some eco-friendly credibility in a crowded field, although the firm might not want to brag too loudly: Toyota has sold four times as many to date and expects to sell one million hybrids just in 2012.
