3D printing has come a long way, and the devices have become affordable enough for people to have them in their homes. Now, a Dutch architecture studio is planning on construction a complete house using a 3D printer.
The Dutch studio Universe Architecture will use a giant D-Shape printer to output their Landscape House. The printer can print sections of 20 feet by 30 feet in a single go. It uses a mixture of sand and a binding agent to print the parts of the Möbius strip-inspired house.
The printer will create hollow sections, which will be filled with fiber-reinforced concrete for strength. While other smaller projects have been attempted, this will be the first 3D-printed full-scale residence in the world. Based on current estimates, it will take around 18 months to create.
As the technology becomes faster and more commonplace, it could allow for the production of houses at a much lower cost – and in forms not typically achievable using conventional building techniques.

Unless you are living in an actual Transformer, chances are the abode where you find shelter and respite from after each grueling day at the office would be largely static, other than the times when you have saved enough to perform a renovation of the entire place. For folks who live in countries with seasonal temperature changes, the way your home stands up to the weather will definitely play a role in the kind of comfort level you experience throughout the year. The Dynamic D*Haus is one interesting concept that will change its shape to accommodate different kinds of weather conditions, as well as time changes, sunrise, and sunsets just to mention a few.
UK designers David Ben Grünberg and Daniel Woolfson are the brains behind the Dynamic D*Haus, which is capable of changing into 8 different shapes. Inspired by Henry Dudeney’s mathematical formula, known as the Haberdasher’s Puzzle, it will divide an equilateral triangle into a quartet of parts, which will then be reconfigured to form a square. The Dynamic D*Haus’ main purpose was to make it more pleasant to live under the harsh weather conditions in Lapland, but this design is universal, so it does not really matter where you reside in.

How’d you like it if you could fold up your entire house and store it in a shipping container? Well, that’s basically what artist/architect Adam Kalkin recently did with the creation of his Push Button House. It’s like a Transformer, but in shipping container form.
The 8-foot-wide, 20-foot-long house has 5 rooms inside of it, and starts out looking like an ordinary shipping container. But with the push of a button, the house comes to life, with a complete kitchen, dining room, bedroom, living room and library hiding inside.
A series of complicated hydraulics and carefully placed objects ensure the house and its contents fold up perfectly into itself.
The interior is all done up in a shiny white lacquer finish for show, but I suppose it could be built out with any design. This is actually the second Push Button House designed by Kalkin, and is much more complex and advanced than the original.
The home was recently shown in an exhibition for Italian coffee company illy caffè. Here’s a video from SPACEStv showing off the build process and engineering behind the Push Button House. Gotta love the part at the end where Kalkin admits he doesn’t even know what a Transformer is, despite the fact that he just built one.
Sure, the concept is pretty impractical and anything that’s not glued or bolted down would immediately fall all over the place when its folded up, but it’s still an impressive design.
I love this house, built in Rotterdam by Dutch architectural firm Shift. What a wonderful and perfectly executed idea: to build an entire four-story-high house around a gigantic bookshelf that goes across all floors. It really looks beautiful—and useful too. More »

As you know, we love our LEGO around here. Every time I think I’ve seen it all, my faith in the creativity of humankind is restored by yet another LEGO build. This particular construction was inspired by the Mexican tradition of Dia de los Muerto, or The Day of the Dead.
LEGO-maniac Brickbaron created this bright and colorful scene of a fun house, loaded with happy (and somewhat terrified) minifigs as they make their way in and out of the FunHaus (which, coincidentally isn’t Spanish at all).
It’s embellished with skulls and a facade loaded with eyeballs and chompy teeth to lure you in. It’s also got an awesome moving scene in the middle, which you can check out in the video clip below:
Brickbaron also says the scene was highly influenced by the works of artist Pooch, and I suggest that you check out his website for some cool and unusual paintings. Be sure to check out the hi-res images of FunHaus over on Flickr too.

Xbox Live frontman Larry Hryb (aka Major Nelson) took to his blog on Tuesday to announce that Dish and Verizon FiOS customers can now download the Fox Broadcast app for Xbox 360 to stream next-day Fox programming. In order to use this free app, you’ll need a paid Xbox Live Gold subscription. In addition to keeping you up to date with recent episodes of Fringe and Family Guy, this new app also includes access to legacy series such as House and 24. Like most things Xbox, the Fox Broadcasting app features Kinect integration, because everything is “better with Kinect,” right?
