HP Envy X2 Review

HP Envy X2 Review

Microsoft created its Windows 8 OS with touchscreen in mind, with a number of traditional PC users most likely groaning at the thought of reaching out to their monitor in order to open up a program. Mobile computers like laptops, ultrabooks and tablets seem to be making the best use of the new OS since their screen is within an easily reachable distance.

HP introduced its Envy X2 last August which is an 11.6” touch-screen slate PC that easily brings the portability of a tablet with the productivity of a light laptop when it’s connected to its keyboard dock. When we originally put our hands all over it, we walked away extremely impressed, but we knew we had to get this thing into our review lab to put it through all of our tests to see just how good it is. HP Envy x2 review: a tablet / laptop hybrid that fails to deliver

DNP HP Envy x2 review an tablet laptop hybrid that fails to deliver

Like every self-respecting company releasing new Windows 8 devices, HP has refreshed its existing laptops with touch-optimized features ready to handle the new OS’ gestures. But also like any self-respecting PC maker, HP is outing a device with a more adventurous form factor. The Envy x2 stands out among other hybrids running the same 1.8GHz Atom processor for its more attractive design, IPS display and nice-to-have features like NFC and pen input. At $850 with the included keyboard dock, though, it’s a hair more expensive than comparable products such as the Acer Iconia W510. So is the x2 a solid machine — both as a laptop and as a standalone tablet? You know where to meet us if you want to find out.

HP fills in pricing and availability details for its sprawling Windows 8 line-up

HP announces pricing and dates for its entire Windows 8 lineup

HP has just announced pricing and availability for its burgeoning Windows 8 lineup of hybrid PCs, notebooks, all-in-ones, desktops and business PCs. The company seem to be wooing every niche out there with a huge (and confusing) array of products running the newfangled OS, and though we already knew the score on many, the picture is now (almost!) complete. The 11.6-inch Envy x2 hybrid (shown above), powered with an Intel Clover-Trail flavored Atom processor will come on the scene on November 14th starting from $850, for instance, and we also have the scoop on the HP Envy TouchSmart Ultrabook 4, HP Phoenix h9 desktop PC and HP Pavilion dm1 (with new 4G connectivity) after the break. Finally, HP still hasn’t released pricing or details on its once-mysterious ElitePad 900 business tablet, but they did say that customers who nab one early next year will receive a 50GB Box cloud storage account, gratis. To see the company’s entire range, along with dates and prices, the PR is also after the fold.

HP ENVY x2 could fool some into thinking this is a MacBook Air

If you are part of the Apple camp, you would most probably say that the MacBook Air was the catalyst for the PC camp to come up with the super slim and sexy Ultrabook. Here we are with one of the latest creations from HP’s camp, which is known as the HP ENVY x2. It is definitely a looker, I will give it that, and if you ever asked yourself the question of whether to tote around your notebook or your tablet to a given destination with just one choice, then you need not answer that question any more if you happen to pack a HP ENVY x2 in your backpack. I will let you know why right after the jump.

To keep up with the Joneses, the HP ENVY x2 will sport a sleek aluminum finish as well as an innovative hinge which has magnets, allowing you to glide the tablet smoothly into place, while keeping it there. Tipping the scales at a mere 3.1 pounds. If you separate the tablet, that particular portion will weigh a mere 1.5 pounds. Surely you will not complain any more about sore shoulders whenever you hit the showfloor at events and shows like CES?

Thanks to the inclusion of Windows 8 as its operating system of choice, you are able to interact with the HP ENVY x2 directly through its 11.6” HD touch display. Whenever you want to share a video or a presentation with others, the extra wide viewing angle will make that a possibility, and so too, does its bright 400-nit In-Plane Switching (IPS) panel deliver a visual experience that will not be forgotten too easily, be it indoors or outdoors. Want to keep in touch with family and friends from near and afar? Fret not, the HD webcam located at the front bezel will be able to cater for all your video call needs, while there is an 8-megapixel camera located at the rear of the HP ENVY x2 which will record great looking photos and shoot memorable videos.

SSD is used in favor of a hard drive, while the inclusion of NFC connectivity helps bring it to the next level of computing. You will be able to find the HP ENVY x2 in the market as soon as Windows 8 arrives, which should be sometime at the end of October.

HP unveils Envy x2 laptop / tablet hybrid: 11-inch IPS screen, NFC and pen support, arriving later this year

HP unveils Envy x2 laptop tablet hybrid 11inch IPS screen, NFC and pen support, arriving later this year

You didn’t think the world’s top PC maker was going to sit out the laptop / tablet hybrid trend, now did you? HP, one of the last OEMs to share its Windows 8 plans, just announced the Envy x2, an 11-inch tablet that comes with a keyboard dock. And while that form factor may already seem tired, HP is dressing it up with some higher-end features, including an aluminum build, NFC, pen support, Beats Audio and a 400-nit, IPS display. (The resolution is 1,366 x 768, as is the case for many of these 11-inch Windows 8 hybrids.)

The tablet itself measures about 8.5mm thick and weighs 1.5 pounds, while the dock weighs 1.6. Unlike competing products, the device combines magnets and a mechanical latch to keep the tablet from falling out of its dock (watch us manhandle the x2 in the video below to see what we’re talking about). All told, we were impressed by how surprisingly light the tablet and dock feel — given the metal armor encasing it all, it’s easy to assume otherwise.

Under the hood, the x2 runs an Atom-based Clover Trail processor. Though HP isn’t ready to talk battery life, we’ve noticed that every other OEM releasing a Clover Trail device is promising between nine and 10 hours of runtime, so we expect the x2 to deliver comparable performance. What’s more, the dock has a built-in battery of its own, so you’ll definitely have some reserve power there. Poke around on the dock and you’ll find two USB ports, HDMI output and a full-size SD slot. The tablet itself is home to an 8-megapixel rear camera and microSD slot, in case the 64GB of built-in storage isn’t capacious enough.

Right now, it’s unknown how much the x2 will cost, or when, exactly, it will go on sale, except that it’s expected to arrive in time for the holiday shopping season. For now, feel free to poke around our hands-on photo gallery, and avail yourselves of our walk-through, embedded just past the break.
