HP, Lenovo in tight battle over PC sales in Q4 2012

HP may still have the lead when it comes to global PC sales, but Lenovo is right behind in a very tight second. Research firm IDC reported that HP maintained its worldwide PC lead in the fourth quarter of 2012 despite a slight decline in sales. Shipments for the company went down by 0.6% from the same time last year, while Lenovo’s grew by 8.2%.

However, while the growth of Lenovo seems significant, outpacing everyone else in the PC industry, it still wasn’t a good as the growth the company had earlier in 2012. Q3 saw Lenovo’s shipment growth up a whopping 30%. According to IDC, that didn’t give Lenovo quite enough momentum to pass HP, which held a slim third quarter lead, holding 15.9% of the PC market, while Lenovo held 15.7%.

However, if Lenovo keeps up the effort, they could easily see themselves blasting past HP before long. It seems many are questioning HP’s commitment to the PC business in the first place. After deciding to stay in the PC business after announcing that they would possibly sell it off, many potential customers remained skeptical.

Finishing out the top five PC makers on the list, according to IDC, include third-place Dell, whose shipments declined by 20.8% in the fourth quarter compared to a year earlier, Acer, whose PC shipments declined by 28.2% in the fourth quarter, and ASUS, whose shipments grew by 5.6%, making them the only company besides Lenovo to see a gain in sales.

Meg Whitman Expects It Will Take Five Years To Turn HP Around

hp sign Meg Whitman Expects It Will Take Five Years To Turn HP AroundHP was and still is a pretty big name in computing, although we guess the company did not manage to experience the same success when it came to their mobile products, at least until the HP TouchPad went on a fire sale and when people found out that you could actually port Android onto it, so how long will it take before HP manages to regain some of its former glory? In an interview with BusinessWeek, HP’s Meg Whitman revealed that her plan to turn HP around would take about five years. She also acknowledged that not many people are happy to hear that, and we guess we can’t blame them – five years does seem to be more like a long-term plan rather than a short-term one.

In the meantime Whitman stated that she’s trying to introduce a culture of thrift in the company, such as taking company executives out of their plush offices and putting them into cubicles, and that she does not want HP to be looked upon as a “fancy pants” company. As far as the mobile front is concerned, Whitman expressed that HP still had an interest in smartphones and that they will come up with one in the future once they figure out how to do so without losing a “boatload of money”. For those who have enjoyed HP’s offerings in the past, perhaps this might be a glimmer of hope although it seems unlikely that HP’s future offerings will be of the webOS variety.

TMobile's 4G Connect offers free 200MB of monthly data on PCs and tablets handson

T-Mobile knows that the easiest way to get new customers is to give away your service for free, and it’s handing access out like so much candy with its new 4G Connect strategy. Similar to what we’ve seen for Chromebooks, the deal supplies 200MB of free data every month for up to two years, right out of the box. Those who need more than casual email checks on the road just need to pay T-Mobile’s prepaid rates to keep the broadband going. The Dell Inspiron 14z and HP Pavilion dm1 are the only devices available for now that qualify for the 4G Connect plan, but more are lined up for 2013, including (but not exclusively) devices with Qualcomm’s Gobi chipsets in PCs or its Snapdragon chips in Windows RT tablets. T-Mobile tells us that we won’t have to hunt down specific Magenta models, either — once a PC line includes 4G Connect, every American variant should carry the needed modem as a matter of course.

We had the opportunity to try a Pavilion dm1 with 4G Connect, and it’s clear that T-Mobile is largely letting the PC builder take priority. The hardware is very much vanilla on the outside. Most of what you’ll notice, apart from reasonably fast HSPA+ data when you’re away from WiFi, is a custom T-Mobile app. Both a Live Tile and the full app will show usage; diving in shows everything in a simple not-Metro layout with extra options for SMS messaging and topping up when the bandwidth runs low. Apart from having to register the PC in the first place, the service is as simple as we’d care to see. Now, where’s our LTE connection?

HP Pocket Playlist Announced

hp pocket playlist 1 HP Pocket Playlist Announced[CES 2013] How many of you think that the portable media player is no longer applicable in this day and age? Certainly to own a dedicated portable media player does not make much sense these days considering how most smartphones, if not all, sport more than decent media playback capability on their own in the first place. Well, the HP Pocket Playlist does something different from being a portable media player – and even better news is, it does not need any kind of Internet connection to work even when streaming. Just what is the HP Pocket Playlist all about?

This innovative portable device basically streams unencrypted content that range from movies, music, TV shows and photos, to up to five mobile devices simultaneously. You could say that this premium entertainment device functions as a home DVR, albeit coming in a far smaller and lighter form factor compared to the average smartphone, making it a snap to tote around with you wherever you go. You can prerecord videos from more than 50 online websites, reserving them for future playback, and there is enough memory to hold 16 full-length movies, 7,600 songs or 10,000 photos. Expect the HP Pocket Playlist to arrive in the markets this February 15th for $129, meaning it ain’t gonna cut the mustard as a Valentine’s Day gift. .

There’s no shortage of WiFi storage devices these days, but it’s not often that they collect web video — which makes HP’s new Pocket Playlist at least somewhat worthy of a closer look. Through a PlayLater subscription and PC software, the wireless drive can store video from Hulu, Netflix and other sources for playback when it’s more convenient. Anyone not keen on trying to snag a local copy of a stream can still share up to 16 movies, 7,600 songs or 10,000 photos to as many as five devices, including Android, iOS and Windows Phone gear. HP ships the Pocket Playlist on February 15th for $129.

HP Pocket Playlist brings a tiny mobile surprise to CES 2013

Out of all the notebooks, all-in-one PCs, and Windows-toting machines revealed at CES this year, the most surprising device HP is bringing to the party has to be the Pocket Playlist. The HP Pocket Playlist is a portable storage device that makes with the wireless connections to your devices across the board, with and without internet connections. Portable media storage and entertainment alike, that’s what’s going on here.

This machine is made to stream unencrypted content to up to five mobile devices at the same time – so says HP. This machine streams movies, music, TV shows, and photos, everything you like. And it’s just a tiny stick – it’s utterly simple in its presentation, surprising in its connectivity abilities. It works with apps, too, starting with a free one-month subscription to PlayLater – record media such as Hulu or Netflix shows and movies and play them later for free on your many multiple devices.

This machine is able to hold up to 16 full-length movies, 7,600 songs or 10,000 photos, though how much storage that actually is, HP isn’t quite letting go of quite yet. You’ll be able to connect to and play to most Wi-fi capable devices including those running Android, Windows Phone, and iOS. This device will be popping up in the United States in February 15th for $129 USD – grab a few!

HP unveils new Pavilion TouchSmart Sleekbook for Windows 8

HP isn’t wasting any time here at CES and have already announced a slew of new monitors, desktop PCs, as well as a few notebooks. Today they’ve also added two awesome new Sleekbooks to their growing lineup. HP has just announced the all new HP Pavilion TouchSmart Sleekbook geared for Windows 8, as well as a non-touch Sleekbook to round out their offering. More details below.

The brand new HP TouchSmart Sleekbook is their best, most affordable touch notebook to date according to Kevin Wentzel, Technical Marketing Manager at HP. With the new Touchsmart they look to easily expand beyond the traditional keyboard and mouse for a truly emmersive touch experience provided by Windows 8.

Both new Pavilion Sleekbooks offer a full HD 15.6-inch display, and the TouchSmart is fully touch sensitive from edge-to-edge. It will feature full multi-touch gesturing, easy navigation, and much much more. Being 15.6-inches HP’s managed to still equip these new notebooks with numeric keyboards, user replaceable batteries, and excellent portability.

HP unveils a slew of new IPS and LED monitors at CES 2013

Today things are officially off and running with CES 2013, and what better way to start some announcements from HP then with a host of new Windows 8 PC monitors. HP has a slew of 5 new monitor series. They’ll be featuring impressive LED, IPS, and ProDisplay monitors on the showroom floor this week, and we’ve got all the details so read on below to find out more.

heser

We’ll jump right in as they’ve just announced 5 different monitors this afternoon. The biggest of the bunch coming in at 27-inches is the new HP Envy 27 Monitor. This features a beautiful and vivid 27-inch IPS LCD panel with their thin blade bezel design. It’s also protected in edge-to-edge hardened glass for extra gloss and protection. It features built-in Beats Audio stereo speakers, and a full 1920 x 1080p HD resolution. The new 27-inch IPS Envy 27 hits the streets February 3rd for around $499.

envy27

Next since we’re talking about IPS displays is their new HP Pavilion 20xi-27xi IPS monitors. While not covered in hardened glass like the model above, the xi series features a similar edge-to-edge bezel free design with their blade technology. They’ll come in 4 sizes: 22xi, 23xi, 25xi, and 27xi and all have 1920×1080 Full HD resolution options. You’ll then get support via VGA, DVI-D and HDMI connectivity, while a smaller 20xi offers 1600 X 900 resolution with VGA. The IPS panels ensure 178-degree viewing angles and excellent colors. The new Pavilion xi monitors start at $129 and go to $339 for the 27xi. All available around the end of January.

Then for those on the go HP’s announced their new HP U160 15.6-inch LED Backlit Monitor. This unique display features a built in stand that doubles as a carry case, and is ideal for those on the go needing a portable monitor. Weighing in around 3.4 lbs and measuring only 1.02 inches thin, this should be a great choice for many. It’s expected to be available in January starting at $179 USD.

u160

Next up is the HP x2401 24-inch LED Backlit Monitor (pictured below and also at the head of this article). This is another high end Beats Audio powered monitor, only it is 24-inches and comes with an LED display instead of IPS — so won’t be priced as high as the 27-inch monitor above. The X2401 features an MVA panel, not IPS, but still gives excellent 178 degree viewing angles and extremely inky black colors. This monitor also rocks a full 1920 x 1080p HD resolution 5000:1 contract ratio, and comes in a brushed aluminum finish. Oddly HP states it won’t be available until November, but will be priced at $249.

firsas

Then last but certainly not least is the new HP ProDisplay LED backlit line. These are more traditional monitors, and come in 18.5, 20, and 21.5-inch inch models. Respective names are P191 18.5-inch, P201 20-inch, P201m 20-inch, and P221 21.5-inch LED Backlit Monitors. These offer 250 nits brightness, 1000:1 contract, 3M:1 DCR, 5ms response time, and 170/160 viewing angles, so not quite IPS quality. These have the always welcomed 35-degrees of tilt adjustability and 90-degree pivot modes for multiple uses. I’d probably snag two P221′s and put them side by side. The new ProDisplay line will be priced at $129-179 based on size.

prodisplayfamily

Surely we can expect big things from HP here at CES, and we’ll be running around trying to get pictures and videos of all their latest and greatest. Stay tuned for plenty more from CES 2013.
