German prosecution charges HP staff with bribing Russian officials to clinch PC contract

HP prints money

The legal system’s engines can take awhile to get churning, but there’s no questioning the impact when they’re at full bore. German prosecutors have wrapped up an almost three-year investigation into allegations of HP managers’ bribery by charging the executives involved. Hilmar Lorenz, Päivi Tiippana and Ken Willett, along with claimed accomplice Ralf Krippner, have all been indicted for supposedly funneling €7.5 million ($9.7 million) in bribes through a German subsidiary and far-flung shell accounts to land a €35 million ($45.3 million) PC supply deal with Russia’s Prosecutor General Office early in the previous decade. While only the people directly attached to the scandal currently face any consequences if found guilty, German lawyers are motioning to have the PC builder attached to the case, and there’s a chance the formal charges could fuel an ongoing US investigation. HP is cooperating even as it’s trying to distance itself from the indictments as much as possible — these are for old allegations and a “former HP company,” it says. While we don’t yet know the whole story, it may be a protracted tale knowing that at least Tiippana and Willett plan to fight the accusations.

HP ENVY Phoenix m9 PC gets super-slim 11mm x2401 Full HD display pairing

HP isn’t all about new notebooks today; the company also has a meaty new ENVY desktop along with a super-skinny Full HD LCD display. The HP ENVY Phoenix h9 offers a choice of Intel Ivy Bridge processors and either AMD or NVIDIA graphics, with a choice of regular hard-drive or SSD storage, and an illuminated case which the company claims looks “armor-plated” but which we reckon has a touch of the fish gills about it.

Still, you get internal space for three drives, with tool-free bays and re-configured cable routing for boosted airflow around the chassis. Liquid cooling is an option, as is an ExpressCache SSD for curtailed boot times and app loading, and there’s Beats Audio branding too.

As for the HP x2401 display, that comes in at 24-inches with Full HD resolution, but its real appeal is its thickness – or lack of. It measures a mere 11mm deep, and can be stripped of its easel desk-stand for wall mounting.

Ports include DisplayPort and HDMI, and HP sensibly quotes both a proper contrast ratio (5,000:1) along with the near-meaningless 10,000,000:1 dynamic ratio, something rival firms could definitely learn from. There’ll also be a business version, the HP L2401x.

The HP ENVY Phoenix m9 will go on sale October 26, priced from $899. Meanwhile, the HP x2401 will arrive November 7, priced at $249, while its commercial counterpart will be $10 more but land two days earlier.

HP ENVY m4 and Sleekbook 14 and 15 ultraportables revealed

HP has outed a new range of lightweight notbeooks, kicking off with the metal-clad HP ENVY m4 thin-and-light, and including the Sleekbook 14 and 15 for the mainstream. The ENVY m4 slots a choice of Intel Core i3/i5 processors inside its aluminum casing, paired with up to 8GB of RAM and a 1,366 x 768 display; HP tells us we can expect up to eight hours.

There’s also a choice of SSD or HDD storage, the option of a backlit keyboard, and integrated optical drive, and an HD webcam. Intel WiDi wireless display streaming is supported, and there’s both stereo speakers and a subwoofer squeezed inside, with Beats Audio branding. A fingerprint scanner in the palmrest closes out security.

The HP ENVY m4 will go on sale from October 26, priced from $899.99.

As for the Sleekbook 14 and 15 – offering, unsurprisingly, 14-inch and 15.6-inch display options, both running at HD resolution – with Intel doing processor duty on the larger model and AMD’s chips running the smaller version. HDMI, USB 3.0, and USB 2.0 connectivity, along with HD webcams and optional discrete NVIDIA graphics make up the bulk of the specs, and the larger Sleekbook 15 gets a numeric keypad too.

The HP Sleekbook 14 kicks off at $499.99, while the Sleekbook 15 starts at $559.99; both will go on sale from October 26.

Who Can Actually Use This NFC Mouse? [Chatroom]

This is HP’s new Touch-to-Pair-Mouse. For just $40, HP will sell you this chunk of NFC-enabled peripheral, which can be paired with devices with the lightest tap. Sounds great, right? Apart from, who the hell has NFC on their computer? More »

HP hints at enterprise tablet launch soon

So we have seen our fair share of Sleekbooks from HP today in addition to the HP ENVY dm4 and an NFC mouse, but what about the tablet front? Surely HP is aware that the iPad is one of the hottest devices in the market at the moment, where the highly competitive tablet and smartphone market do seem to bring out the best of innovation in companies who are playing the game. Well, it does seem as though HP has not forgotten about the tablet market, considering how the last line of their press release mentioned that an “enterprise-ready tablet will be announced soon.”

The thing is, “soon” is a fairly relative word depending on the context of its usage. We do believe that with Microsoft’s Windows 8 and Windows RT operating systems arriving within this year alongside the Microsoft Surface tablet, the notion of a Windows-powered enterprise tablet from HP does not sound too far fetched, and neither is the mentioned time frame. Just what do you think HP has exactly in mind?

HP Touch To Pair NFC-enabled mouse

Just when you thought that improvements in the world of computer peripherals, especially when it comes to the humble mouse, could not move forward any further, here we are with word that HP has just announced their Touch To Pair mouse which is NFC-enabled. Of course, it might seem like overkill at this point in time as how many notebooks or Ultrabooks out there in the market come with NFC connectivity these days? Still, there is alway good ol’ Bluetooth to fall back on, where the HP Touch To Pair mouse with NFC support will hit the market later this November.

This is purely an office/home mouse, so do not expect to get any kind of hot and heavy gaming action going on, especially when all HP is asking for in exchange is a rather meagre $39. I guess your computer or tablet is going to get a new companion soon if you are interested in picking up this particular digital rodent.

HP Probook 4545s, powered by AMD

HP has just released this Probook 4545s laptop which is designed for the enterprise market. As such, the computer was envisioned with a few key points: durability, multimedia capability, performance and full array of ports. The durability is quite obvious: people who are on the go often tend to put their laptops through harsh use, transport and possibly environment.

To ensure rigidity of the chassis, HP uses aluminum which has been treated to be smudge and scratch resistant. The keyboard is also spill-resistant, which is apparently a must-have feature for business laptops. And if the laptop is dropped, a sensor will park the HDD heads to avoid a fatal disk crash (err… they still have HDDs?). (more…)

HP Pavilion Sleekbook 14 and Pavilion Sleekbook 15 announced

What’s this? Are we looking at a new class of hardware just when the market is warming up to Ultrabooks? HP’s announcement of the HP Pavilion Sleekbook 14 and Pavilion Sleekbook 15 actually toes the Ultrabook line and veers away from it slightly, where these are actually powered by AMD processors underneath the hood for one of the models, and might not necessarily keep within the boundaries of what defines an Ultrabook in order to price it competitively (read: make it more affordable to the masses). As you can view in the photo gallery below, the HP Pavilion Sleekbook 14 and Pavilion Sleekbook 15 will come in Sparkling Black and Ruby Red shades, sporting 14-inch and 15.6-inch diagonal high-definition displays respectively.

Not only that, you will not find yourself running out of hard drive space that fast, since they will both feature up to 1TB of storage space, where other hardware specifications are pretty much up to today’s par such as HDMI, USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 connectivity, a TrueVision HD webcam, Dolby Advanced Audio, optional NVIDIA discrete graphics, alongside a numeric keypad in the Sleekbook 15 for increased productivity. The Sleekbook 14 will be powered by AMD, while those who are so used to having “Intel Inside” can settle for the HP Pavilion Sleekbook 15.

The HP Pavilion Sleekbook 14 and Sleekbook 15 will retail for $499.99 and $559.99, respectively, as they arrive Stateside this coming October 26th in the US.

HP ENVY m4 unveiled

HP has just lifted the curtains of their ENVY m4 notebook that is said to deliver the right balance of mobility, performance and entertainment, all cleverly engineered into a thin and light package for customers to get the best portable computing experience wherever they go. Corporate types will definitely appreciate this puppy as it comes with HP ProtectSmart that will help guard against data loss should the ENVY m4 be dropped, while HP CoolSense helps to adjust performance and internal fan settings automatically for a physically cooler experience, and security issues are handled by HP SimplePass technology that relies on biometrics for that added peace of mind.

On the outside, HP’s design engineers has made sure the HP ENVY m4 is a sight for sore eyes, where it boasts of a simple brushed-aluminum design and optional backlit keyboard, coming with a 14-inch diagonal HD display and third-generation Intel Core processors that pack quite the punch required for the road warrior. Not only that, the HP ENVY m4 will be accompanied by an HP TrueVision HD Webcam, while select models will carry Intel WiDi connectivity which enables you to project PC content wirelessly to an HD TV.

Other hardware specifications include a built-in subwoofer and two speakers that amplify Beats Audio in order for your ears to enjoy a decent portable audio experience after a hard day of work. Pricing for the HP ENVY m4 will begin from $899.99 upwards, depending on the hardware configuration of your choice. Expect it to arrive in select markets when October 26th rolls around.

HP retools the design of its Envy Phoenix h9 desktop, says the new version will go on sale October 26th

It was just a few months ago that HP refreshed its Envy Phoenix h9 desktop tower with Ivy Bridge processors, and now it’s gone back to the drawing board to re-tool the design itself. In its latest incarnation, it has an “armor-plated” design and toolless hard disk bays that can support up to three drives. HP says it also fine-tuned the cable dressing to improve airflow and cooling performance. As ever, the machine will be offered with third-generation Intel Core processors and your choice of NVIDIA or AMD graphics. Solid-state drives are also an option. Curious? You’ll have to wait until the Windows 8 launch on October 28th to get one. An odd move, if you ask us, since the h9 isn’t a Win 8-optimized system, and the changes here appear to be purely hardware-related.
