Unannounced HP tablet glimpsed in official picture (again), could be Slate 8

Image

HP’s Make it Matter site features a shot of a medical-type person using a mysterious device that’s the spitting image of one we saw in July. While the company’s made no secret of its plans for a Windows 8 tablet, it’s yet to confirm if this is the Slate 8 or some other unannounced flagship. Given the context, perhaps this is an enterprise offering designed for corporate customers, or it could just as easily be the fever-dream of a Madison Avenue art director. If it’s real, we’d expect a release around October 26th along with the rest of the Windows 8 cohort.

CyanogenMod 10 gets ported onto the HP TouchPad unofficially

The HP TouchPad despite having been discontinued is a pretty popular tablet. This was thanks to its fire sale which priced the device at a very affordable $99, making it not only cheaper than certain digital photo frames, but a lot more functional too. Plus the fact that it was discovered that Android ROMs could be flashed onto the device made it a much more appealing option. The good news is that if you still have your TouchPad lying around and you’re looking to give it a new lease on life, it seems that CyanogenMod 10 has been unofficially ported onto the device, giving your TouchPad a taste of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean which is what the mod is based on.

However there are some issues with this particular port and it does not appear to be complete or fully functional yet. For example there have been reports that the TouchPad does not charge properly after installing the ROM, and some features such as YouTube, Netflix, playing 3D games and the likes are not working yet. We assume that these bugs will be ironed out in due time, but for now if you’d like to check out the progress of the ROM so far, you can head on over to Liliputing for the download links and the instructions.

Dell and HP rumored to be releasing a Windows RT tablet this October

Microsoft SurfaceA while back we reported that Dell had confirmed they were working on a Windows 8 tablet, although it was not specified as to which version of Windows 8 they would be working on. According to the rumors, Dell had supposedly taken HP’s spot for a Windows 8 tablet when HP decided to pull out from the running. However thanks to a new set of rumors, word has it that both HP and Dell have joined forces and are looking to push out a Windows RT tablet this October. The RT version of Windows will be running on ARM-based processors and according to the report, HP’s version will be using Texas Instruments’ chips while Dell will be turning to Qualcomm for their chips. This seems to go against previous rumors that suggested that Qualcomm had chosen HP to work with, but since these are merely rumors, we guess taking it with a grain of salt is the best course of action at this point. Either way the release date for both HP and Dell’s Windows RT tablets has been pegged for the 26th of October, so we guess we will have to wait and see if the rumors pan out.

TouchPad gets a taste of Android 41 Jelly Bean courtesy of CyanogenMod 10 video

Want the latest version of Android on your device? Sure, we all do, and despite HP having put the TouchPad out to pasture long ago, the modder community isn’t giving up hope. One brave soul over at Xda Developers who goes by the handle Jscullins can (and should) be thanked for bringing bargain tablet lovers a dose of CyanogenMod 10. It’s still a preview build lacking, among other things, sound and video acceleration, but if you absolutely have to get a buttery smooth UI on your tablet right now hit up the source link for the download. Or, you could just check out the video of it in action after the break courtesy of Liliputing. It’s probably safer.

Canalys: PC and tablet shipments hit new high in Q2 with Apple in the lead, HP next in line

Canalys PC and tablet shipments hit new high in Q2 with Apple in the lead, HP next in line

Wondering how the industry fared in the second quarter of 2012? Shipments in the PC sector, which in Canalys’ book includes tablets, were higher than ever, totaling 108,708,780 units globally. iPad sales put Apple in the lead, with more than 21 million devices shipped (this figure also includes desktops and notebooks) in Q2, compared to just over 13 million during the year-ago quarter, representing a massive 59.6-percent year-over-year growth. HP, which led the way in Q1, has fallen to the second-place spot, with nearly 13.6 million shipments during the quarter ending yesterday, followed by Lenovo with about 13.2 million, Acer with nearly 10.7 million and Dell with roughly 9.7 computers sold. Manufacturers like ASUS and Samsung are represented in the substantial “others” category, which totals about 40.6 million devices. There’s no question that the iPad is behind Apple earning the number-1 slot, and with the upcoming Windows 8 launch, those figures could shift drastically the next time around. Click on through to the source link below for the full Canalys breakdown.

Apple tops Q2 computing and MS Surface will sink say analysts

Apple took top spot in worldwide PC shipments in Q2 2012, according to one research firm, making up almost 20-percent alone when tablets are lumped in with desktops and notebooks. Year-on-year growth for the Mac and iPad maker reached almost 60-percent to more than 21m units for the three month period, Canalys calculates, comfortably exceeding HP, Lenovo, Acer and Dell.

HP just squeezed into second place for the quarter, with a dwindling 0.4-percent marketshare lead over Lenovo in third place. HP’s share amounted to 12.5-percent, a fall of 11.3-percent compared to Q2 2011 when it held the top spot in shipments.

Lenovo mustered 12.1-percent and managed to make the biggest growth year-on-year, at 27-percent. Acer and Dell both sit below the 10-percent mark, Dell slipping from third place in Q2 2011 to fifth place this year.

iPad sales particularly helped Apple, pushing the company back to pole position. However, Samsung also did well, its Galaxy Tab shipments estimated to have doubled year-on-year, while ASUS made strong advances thanks to the sub-$400 TF300. That advantage is expected to continue now that the sub-$200 Nexus 7 is on the market.

The prospect for Windows PCs isn’t quite so rosy. Canalys isn’t convinced that Microsoft’s Surface will open any new doors, likely being low on profit potential as well as potentially damaging the company’s relationship with other Windows OEMs. “We expect the Surface pads to have a similar impact on the PC industry as the Zune did in portable music players” analyst Tim Coulling says ominously.

HP denies Open webOS for existing devices

HP has disappointed and infuriated webOS device owners with the news that its official Open webOS platform – the open-source reincarnation of Palm’s ill-fated OS – will not run on any existing devices. The news, confirmed by the Open webOS team, means those with a TouchPad, Pre, Pixi or other Palm/HP device won’t be able to use HP’s version of webOS moving forward; the company claims that’s because of a lack of driver support for the specific hardware used.

“For Open webOS we are aiming for support on future hardware platforms where SoC’s support Linux 3.3+ kernel and where open source replacements for proprietary components are integrated. Existing devices cannot be supported because of those many proprietary components, including graphics, networking and lack of drivers for a modern kernel (but of course, there is the Community Edition for those interested in improving the TouchPad)” Open webOS project

Having acquired Palm and its software and hardware assets, HP proceeded to run the platform into the ground and subsequently decided to make webOS open-source. The so-called Open webOS result was thrown open to the developer community and other device manufacturers alike, while a separate Community Edition – currently available for the TouchPad – was released a short while ago.

HP’s excuse is that the existing phones and tablets don’t support the Linux Standard Kernel and lack open-source drivers for some of the hardware components; moving forward it plans to work only with new hardware, leaving the Community Edition to handle those with earlier devices. Unsurprisingly that hasn’t gone down well with the webOS community itself, which points out that HP already has access to the necessary drivers for existing devices, and yet has opted not to release them as open-source or, if it cannot, at least work on variants that could be more freely distributed.

As we’ve seen with Microsoft and the decision to make Windows Phone 8 not backward compatible with Windows Phone 7/7.5 handsets, sometimes companies decide it’s better to cut ties with the past than bring everyone along for the ride. Still, with webOS still with minimal market share and highly dependent on the support of existing owners and developers, HP’s strategy could have a significant impact on the platform’s future.

No Open WebOS support for existing WebOS devices, no soup for you

No Open WebOS support for existing WebOS devices, no soup for you

Another day, another major blow to the webOS community. The Open webOS project announced today in its blog that the fledgling OS won’t support any of the existing hardware — like HP’s Pre 3 and TouchPad. While not completely surprising, this is disappointing for those who were hoping to wring a little more life out of their current webOS devices. Open webOS is targeting SoCs that support the Linux 3.3+ kernel and components with open source drivers. The blog post blames the existing hardware’s “many proprietary components, including graphics, networking and lack of drivers for a modern kernel”. Despite having access to these proprietary drivers, it appears HP isn’t willing to make them available to the Open webOS project — proof that sometimes you can have your cake, but not eat it too.

Unannounced HP tablet spotted in a commercial

As we’re sure that some of you guys are aware by now, HP’s attempt to challenge the iPad and Android tablets with their webOS TouchPad did not go very well. However this does not mean that they have given up completely on the idea of tablets since they have confirmed that they will be releasing an Intel-based tablet running on Windows 8. However apart from that announcement, it is unclear as to what that tablet could look like which we’re sure is on everyone’s minds. However those questions could be answered (or lead to more questions) thanks to a recent HP commercial dubbed, “Make It Matter”. In the video above if you skip to the 0:55 mark, you will spot a man holding a HP tablet in landscape mode. Some have speculated that the landscape mode could be an indication that this tablet is running on Windows 8 (since landscape mode was the way Microsoft intended for Windows 8 to be used). The placement of the HP logo further cements this fact. Not much can be seen in the video although based on the back, it does look pretty sleek. We’re guessing that details will be revealed further down the line, so be sure to check back with us then for more news!

HP laptop comes with webcam standard, peek at Chinese factory as bonus (video)

HP laptop comes with inadvertent peek at Chinese factory video

Most tours of Chinese factories at least give workers a heads-up that they’ll be on camera. Not so the exposé that HP inadvertently gave one of its Swedish customers. Reddit user Malplace opened a new laptop to find that a 3-minute webcam video of the factory floor at HP’s contractor, Quanta, was sitting in Windows’ My Documents folder. If you’re looking for scandal from the footage, though, you won’t find it here: Chongqing Manufacturing City’s staff are shown dutifully moving the assembly line along in what looks like fair conditions, if exceptionally repetitive. The instance is most likely just a rare gaffe during testing at a manufacturer that pumps out millions of HP PCs every quarter, so we’ll cut Quanta some slack. It’s still a rare glimpse into a side of technology that’s considered off-limits for much of the buying public.
