Lenovo close to overtaking HP as world’s top PC maker

Analysts claim there could be a new leader in the PC market, with the possibility of Lenovo overtaking Hewlett-Packard’s top spot before the end of the year. If it does happen, it would be the first Chinese PC maker company to take the top place in any global technology sector. Last year, Lenovo PC sales overtook Dell sales in the third quarter, moving its way up to the number two spot globally with a 14.9 percent market share—just a mere 0.6 percent short of HP’s market share.

Despite inching toward number one, analysts are saying that the Lenovo’s fast growing market share has come at the expense of profit margins. The slump in market growth for personal computers combined with tougher competition in the tablet sector are a couple of the biggest challenges Lenovo is facing. PC shipments slowed down during this year’s second quarter in response to the wait for the release of Windows 8 scheduled to come out in October.

Lenovo should benefit from the increase in PC sales if Windows 8 encourages more demand, but an added drawback to the up and coming OS release is that it’s designed for both tablets and computers. Along with other Android vendors, still competition stemming from the Windows tablet market may cause some setbacks for Lenovo PC sales as well as its LePad tablets.

HP Envy Sleekbook 6z review: an inexpensive thin-and-light with AMD innards

DNP HP Envy Sleekbook 6z an almostUltrabook with AMD insides

HP has been fleshing out its Ultrabook lineup as of late, most recently adding the metal-clad Envy Spectre XT to the mix, but the company is also addressing the lower end of the market with its Sleekbook line, announced back in May. Confusingly, these thin-and-light systems look exactly the same as the new Envy-branded Ultrabooks, except that the Sleekbooks are less expensive — namely because for one reason or another they don’t meet Intel’s Ultrabook guidelines. One such notebook, the Envy Sleekbook 6z, stands apart from the Ultrabook fold with an AMD Trinity APU — a spec that helps keep the starting price nice and low at $600.

That’s not to say that all of HP’s Sleekbooks ditch Intel processors, but given the choice between and AMD- and Intel-based model we quickly chose the former. After all, the 6z is the first Trinity-powered system we’ve had the chance to test, so we were naturally curious to see how it stacks up against recent Ivy Bridge machines — and we imagine you are, too. So without any further ado, let’s get to it.

IDC and Gartner: PC market flattened out in Q2 while Apple, ASUS and Lenovo remain the stars

IDC and Gartner PC market flattened out in Q2 while Apple, ASUS and Lenovo remain the stars

Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer might be working overtime to keep Apple at bay, but the PC market that his company largely built is hurting, if you ask researchers at Gartner and IDC. Both estimate that shipments of traditional computers dropped by a tenth of a point in the second quarter of 2012 — not a good sign when Intel’s Ivy Bridge processors and a wave of Ultrabooks were supposed to usher in a PC renaissance. While the exact numbers vary, the two paint a partly familiar picture of the world stage: HP and Dell are taking a bruising, while ASUS and Lenovo are making huge leaps forward. Depending on who you ask, though, Acer is either kicking Dell down to fourth place or occupying that all too comfortable spot itself. The economy and tablets are once again blamed for making would-be PC upgraders jittery, although this time it may also be the wait for Windows 8 leading some to hold off.

If there’s a point of contention, it’s the US figures. Gartner and IDC alike agree that Acer, Dell and HP all took a drubbing. The two analyst groups are at odds with each other when it comes to everyone else, though. Apple will have gained market share to as much as 12 percent, but either increased or shrank its shipments; it’s Lenovo or Toshiba completing the top five outside of the usual suspects. Accordingly, take results with a grain of salt until all the PC builders have reported in. Nonetheless, if the groups have the same reasonable level of precision as they’ve had in the past, Microsoft may have to defer its ambitions for a little while longer.

Announced today, the company has four new models, each one suited for different consumers. First up we have the Compaq Elite 8300 All-in-One PC: designed for business users, featuring security and management features with optional touch capability.

Next we have the HP Compaq Pro 6300 All-in-One: designed for most everyday business and public sector computing requirements. Then we have the HP Envy 23 All-in-One PC for the higher-end users, and lastly the HP Pavilion 23 All-in-One for regular users who want a computer for everyday use. HP outs All-in-One PC quartet including sleek ENVY 23

HP has revealed a new all-in-one foursome, targeting home, business and multimedia users with fully-integrated PCs offering optional touchscreens. The HP ENVY 23 All-in-One and HP Pavilion 23 All-in-One take on the home market, with 23-inch Full 1080p displays and HP’s own media streaming software suite, while the HP Compaq Elite 8300 and HP Compaq Pro 6300 target business users.

The ENVY 23 is probably the most interesting of the four, with easy wall-mounting, an optional HDMI input for using it as a display (such as for a console) and a choice of Blu-ray and integrated TV tuner on the spec sheet. There’s also Beats Audio speakers and up to 2TB of storage.

The HP Pavilion 23 is somewhat more humble than its ENVY sibling, though offers the same 2TB storage. It comes with a choice of AMD multicore processors. It will be priced at $649.99 and the ENVY from $949.99 when they both go on sale August 2.

As for the business models, the Elite 8300 has a 23-inch display with optional two-finger multitouch, an optional 2-megapixel webcam and dual-mic array, and a choice of 2nd and 3rd gen Intel Core processors. Both integrated and discrete graphics will be available, depending on model.

The Pro 6300, finally, has a 21.5-inch display – though no touch option – and an optional 2-megapixel webcam supporting face recognition. It too offers a choice of 2nd/3rd gen Intel Core processors and optional discrete graphics. It will be priced from $799 when it goes on sale September 3, with the 8300 priced from $929 when it arrives on September 10.

HP unveils four new business and consumer all-in-ones with Ivy Bridge insides

HP unveils four new business and consumer allinones with Ivy Bridge insides

HP announced a raft of new Ivy Bridge desktops back in April, but it had a few more all-in-ones up its sleeve. Today the company is unveiling a mix of business- and consumer-targeted machines: the Compaq Elite 8300, Compaq Pro 6300, Envy 23 and Pavilion 23.

Let’s tackle the business models first. Starting at $879, the 23-inch Compaq Elite 8300 is available with second- or third-gen Intel processors and integrated or discrete graphics options. A $929 configuration comes with a multitouch-enabled display. The Compaq Pro 6300, going for $799 and up, doesn’t offer touch functionality, but it includes corporate-friendly security software via HP ProtectTools and, like the Elite 8300, can be configured with either Ivy Bridge or Sandy Bridge CPUs. The 6300 features a 21-inch LED-backlit display and an optional 2-megapixel webcam. The Compaq Elite 8300 will go on sale September 10th, while the 6300 will hit stores on September 3rd.

On the home PC side of things, there’s the $950 HP Envy 23, which sports a 23-inch 1080p screen and a free-standing design with edge-to-edge glass. Beats Audio is on board, and the model is available with Ivy Bridge or AMD trinity processors, up to 2TB of storage, an HDMI-in port, a Blu-ray drive and a TV tuner. Like the Envy 23, the $650 HP Pavilion 23 has a 23-inch 1080p panel and is configurable with up to a 2TB hard drive and either Intel (up to Core i5 Ivy Bridge) or AMD CPUs. Both models will go on sale August 5th. You know the drill: head past the break for the full press release and our hands-on photos.
