HTC One M8 Hacked To Allow Dot View Case To Display Additional Notifications

HTC One M8 Hacked To Allow Dot View Case To Display Additional NotificationsThe HTC One M8 has a pretty interesting accessory in the form of the Dot View cover. What it does is that instead of just covering the phone entirely or opting for a small window like Samsung’s S View cover, it instead features rows and columns of tiny dots in which information can be seen in an 8-bit-like design.

It’s pretty novel and useful if you want to check simple notifications, the time, the weather, and so on. However what if the phone could be hacked in order to allow the case to display even more notifications? Wouldn’t that be pretty cool?

Well hacker Shen Ye has managed to do that and has recently posted a photo of his HTC One M8 with the Dot View case in which the phone is not only able to display the time, but also shows off notifications from Twitter. If you ever wonder what the Twitter mascot would look like in 8-bit, wonder no more.

Unfortunately Shen Ye did not provide more details about the hack, such as whether it will require root access or a hacked APK file, although he did state that since the Sense UI already has access to social networking APIs, it wasn’t that hard to get the Dot View case to show those notifications.

We reckon it’s pretty novel but if you like what you see, hopefully Shen Ye will release a tutorial or how-to on how to achieve that effect with your own HTC One M8.

Verizon HTC One M8 Software Update Arriving Soon

Verizon HTC One M8 Software Update Arriving SoonIf you happen to own the HTC One M8 from Verizon Wireless, then it would be prudent for you to pay attention – this particular flagship smartphone is on its way to picking up a software update, and of course, with this new software update, one will be able to enjoy a slew of new features and fixes that ought to make your HTC One M8 user experience a whole lot more pleasant. The US models do seem to have fallen behind their counterparts in different areas of the world when it comes to software updates, but better late than never would apply beautifully here.

In the new software update, do expect the version number to get bumped up all the way to 1.55.605.2, and among the improvements, you can expect to see the roaming indicator icon removed on some HTC One M8 devices, not to mention resolving an issue that involves webpage and application connection errors under select conditions, fix Bluetooth connectivity improvements, and enjoy an improved sync behavior when closing the flip with Dot matrix case. The entire software update would be approximately 122MB in size. I guess it would be AT&T and T-Mobile subscribers who are left waiting for this software update on their respective HTC One M8 smartphones. [PDF Link]

Dual Lens SDK For HTC One M8 Released

Dual Lens SDK For HTC One M8 Released

HTC doesn’t measure the quality of its flagship’s camera in conventional terms. Last year original HTC One came with an Ultrapixel camera and its successor stuck to this as well. Though this time around the company has made a major improvement. HTC One M8 has dual cameras which are undoubtedly touted as one of the core selling points of this device. The company isn’t restricting access to the two cameras, as promised, it has released the Dual Lens SDK Preview for HTC One M8′s Duo Camera.

HTC One M8′s Dual-Lens Setup Draws Interest From Huawei And Lenovo [Rumor]

HTC One M8s Dual Lens Setup Draws Interest From Huawei And Lenovo [Rumor]It wasn’t too long ago that HTC officially released the HTC One M8 and one of the device’s more unique selling points, apart from its aluminum build and BoomSound front-facing stereo speakers, is the fact that it comes with an Ultrapixel sensor and a dual-lens setup. For those unfamiliar, this setup allows users to edit the focus of their photos even after snapping them, much like the Lytro camera.

However while the feature is pretty novel and interesting, our review found that the camera’s images weren’t exactly up to scratch when blown up. Perhaps on a smaller screen and for web use it’s great, but if you wanted to print them or perhaps use it as a wallpaper, that’s when some of the flaws of the camera can be seen. (more…)

HTC And Samsung Consider Alternative Materials For Flagships [Report]

HTC And Samsung Consider Alternative Materials For Flagships [Report]

Both HTC and Samsung have already unveiled and released their 2014 flagship smartphones, HTC One M8 and the Galaxy S5. There’s a major difference between both devices. HTC opted for an all metal build whereas Samsung stuck with plastic. Leaked internal documents recently revealed that the Taiwan based company believes its flagship is a better choice simply because of the metal build. A new report claims today that both companies might now be considering alternative build materials for their flagships to ensure that they perform well in various markets.

The report comes from Digitimes, a Taiwanese trade publication, which has a hit or miss track record. Citing sources, the report claims that HTC might offer a plastic variant of the One M8, whereas Samsung might introduced a variant of Galaxy S5 that has an all metal build. It has already been long rumored that Samsung is working on a “premium” variant of the Galaxy S5, but nothing has materialized as yet.

The obvious advantage for HTC is price. It will be able to offer the smartphone at a cheaper price than its rival. This might give HTC One M8 sales a boost in Asian markets, where the off contract price of the flagship is expected to fall from $700-800 for the metal variant to $400-500 for the plastic one.

There has been no confirmation as yet about these plans from either company, so a grain of salt is advised.

Glamour Red HTC One M8 Could Be Headed For Verizon

Glamour Red HTC One M8 Could Be Headed For VerizonThe brand new HTC One M8 comes in three different color finishes: Glacial Silver, Amber Gold, and Gun Metal Gray. All those are pretty “safe” choices as they’re relatively tame and to a certain extent pretty classy as well. However if you were looking forward to something more striking, you might be interested to learn that there could be a red version of the HTC One M8.

This is according to @evleaks who revealed that Verizon will be getting a special version of the handset that comes in a Glamour Red finish, which we guess is a tip to Verizon’s nickname being “Big Red”. Back in 2013, Sprint was given the same treatment with a red HTC One of their own too, but we guess this year the luck falls to Verizon. (more…)

    Plastic HTC One M8 Rumored

    Plastic HTC One M8 Rumored

HTC is committed to using an all-metal build for its high-end flagship smartphones. Both the original HTC One and the new HTC One M8 tout metal builds which have been much appreciated, in fact, the company itself considers the metal body a plus over the plastic Galaxy S5. So this rumor doesn’t exactly make a whole lot of sense. A rumor surfaced today claiming that a plastic HTC One M8 is going to be released in the near future. Apart from the difference in build material everything else, as far as the physical appearance goes, is expected to be the same.

Phones Go Back To The Future

LG G2 rear controls I’m no fan of LG’s rear smartphone control keys — but turns out the company had its finger on the pulse of looming hardware disruption when it ushered in those backside smartphone controls last summer, with the G2. T-Mobile’s CEO Shows Off Gold-Plated HTC One M8

T Mobiles CEO Shows Off Gold Plated HTC One M8Remember about a week ago we reported that the brand new HTC One M8 would get a gold-plated treatment and only be sold in certain markets? Well it turns that that T-Mobile’s CEO, John Legere, managed to get his hands on one of the units which he states is courtesy of HTC. The CEO recently took to Twitter to show off his latest handset.

According to Legere, “Just call me #goldfinger! Check out the 24kt #HTCOneM8 the peeps at @HTCUSA sent me! This thing is awesome! #HTCOneUp”. Unfortunately the photo does not show off just how shiny and awesome the phone might look had we seen it in real life, but you can bet that we are a little bit jealous. (more…)
