Samsung Galaxy Note II hands-on with quad-core gaming

The Samsung Galaxy Note II is coming to a carrier near you soon, and one fact that seems to have slipped under the radar for many is that it comes with not just a massive display, but a gaming-ready quad-core Exynos processor as well. Samsung’s own Exynos quad-core architecture inside this phablet unit makes for a fluid experience only otherwise available on Android with the LG Optimus G or the LG Nexus 4, both of which use Qualcomm’s quad-core processor Snapdragon S4 Pro. Let’s have a peek at what Samsung’s double-punch of both the chassis and the chipset made by them for you.

Of course there’s always the international flavor of the HTC One X with the NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor under the hood, but that device trades its motor in for a dual-core Snapdragon when it comes over the sea to AT&T. So here it is: the Galaxy Note II, with what may very well be the most powerful set of innards in a smartphone in the USA. This is the Galaxy Note II working with the game Asphalt 7: Heat.

You’ll see not just relatively swift loading times here, but undeniably fluid and lag-free transitions as well as gameplay throughout the race. This game is a racing game primarily, but also has many quick transitions between live-action gaming and cut-scenes as you crash into walls or crush your opponents into those walls to advance. The Samsung Galaxy Note II makes sure there’s no waiting to matter what you’re getting into.

They’re both essentially the same, as it were, with different apps and some different features included on each different iteration. The benchmark results we’ve been seeing with this device, again regardless of carrier, have been suitably impressive as well: it’s only competition has been the LG Optimus G (see our full review here) – but of course that device has a smaller display, too.

Judge for yourself with a bonus video of the LG Optimus G playing Asphalt 7: Heat as well! It’s a fight! Notice that all of the swiftness remains just as hot here with only slight variations in how each processor and machine run by said processor handles the load. You’ll have both options available to you very, very soon at AT&T, as it were – can’t wait!

HTC One X Jelly Bean update starts in Taiwan and Singapore

In a press release on October 2, HTC stated that the HTC One X and HTC One S would begin receiving a Jelly Bean update sometime this month. It seems the process has begun for the HTC One X, with users in Taiwan and Singapore reporting on the XDA Developers forum that they have successfully updated to Android 4.1.1 with HTC Sense 4+. According to one user, as well as the screenshot below, it’s version 3.14.709.16, and is 353.87MB in size.

Jelly Bean brings users a faster and more fluid user interface, with snappier orientation changes and responses when toggling between apps. The system offers more consistent rendering, and reactive touch responses that help conserve battery life. Other features include the ability to designate certain WiFI SSIDs as mobile hotspots, more accurate Face Unlock, and the ability to swipe from the camera viewfinder to review photos.

As far as the HTC One X, it brings with it a light weight of 130g and a 4.7-inch 1280×720 display. There’s a 1.3-megapixel front camera for video conferencing, and an 8-megapixel rear camera with autofocus, an LED flash, and support for recording videos in up to 1080p HD. Inside you’ll find an NVIDIA 1.5GHz quad-core Tegra 3 chipset, 1GB of RAM, and 32GB of storage space.

HTC Sense 4+ is HTC’s custom overlay, and includes one-touch access to the camera, bypassing the lock screen, as well as two new gallery views, Tap and Go, and Self Portrait mode, which detects faces and applies minor enhancements to the subject’s eyes and skin. There’s no word on when the HTC One S will see some Jelly Bean action, but assuming HTC stays in its October timeline, it is reasonable to assume that users will see the update pop up in the next couple days. HTC One X sees Jelly Bean rollout in Taiwan and Singapore, One S update reportedly coming soon

We’ve known for months that HTC intends to upgrade the One X to Jelly Bean, but now it appears the update is finally going live, at least for folks in Taiwan. Members of the XDA Developers forum are chiming in about a 352.87MB OTA update that’s available within both HTC’s home country and Singapore, which brings Android 4.1.1 and HTC Sense 4+ to the One X. Jelly Bean’s appearance for the handset matches an earlier report from Engadget Chinese of an incoming update promised by HTC Taiwan. According to PocketDroid, general manager of HTC North Asia, Jack Tong, announced that One X users within Asia will see the update begin to roll today, and that the One S will also receive Jelly Bean a tad later. We’ve reached out to HTC to verify Mr. Tong’s comments, and for clarification of specific regions throughout Asia.

To say that the launch of Isis has felt drawn out would be a mild understatement. The alliance first signaled its intentions two years ago, detailed its first markets one year ago and faced a last-minute delay. All the ducks are finally in a row, however, and residents of both Austin as well as Salt Lake City can tap to pay (or score discounts) at the “hundreds” of locations that accept NFC-based purchases through American Express, Capital One, Chase and Isis’ own cash card. Launch day brings app- and SIM-enabled access for nine devices spread rather unevenly across AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon: only the Droid Incredible 4G LTE is confirmed working for Verizon subscribers, while the rest are divided more equally between multiple Samsung Galaxies and HTC devices like the Amaze 4G and One X. Over 20 phones should be Isis-aware before the end of the year. It’s a potentially strong start to one of the few truly cross-network mobile payment systems in the US, but we see a long road ahead before Isis gives Google Wallet some jitters — there’s legions of banks, cities and stores needed before Isis is widespread, and we’re not counting on that ever-elusive universal hardware support.

Isis makes October 22nd mobile payment launch official, vows 20 capable phones by year’s end

While we could easily see this coming, it’s still good to hear the news more directly: Isis has confirmed that its delayed mobile wallet system will arrive on October 22nd. The company’s marketing lead Jaymee Johnson tells us that the NFC-based commerce should start in the previously mentioned Austin and Salt Lake City areas. We haven’t been given a formal device list, but “as many as” 20 smartphones should be compatible by the end of the year. We can think of at least four. More details will follow on the day in question, although we already know that the cash-averse will need an Isis app, a special SIM card and compatible SmartTap terminals at stores. That’s a lot of conditions that have to be satisfied just to lighten the strain on our pockets — all the same, we’ll take it when the alternatives are moving slowly.

Sony PlayStation Mobile launches for Vita and select Android devices

Sony is looking to ramp up their mobile efforts even more by introducing PlayStation Mobile, a new service that allows gamers to play a handful of games across different mobile platforms. The service will allow you start a game on one device (like the Vita), and pick up where you left off on another device (like an Android smartphone or tablet).

There are a couple caveats that you should be aware of, though. First, the service only works on “PlayStation Certified” devices, which means the Vita, obviously, but also only a handful of newer Android devices from Sony and HTC. The list consists of the Xperia Play, Xperia Arc, Xperia S, Xperia Ion, Xperia Acro, Xperia Acro HD, Sony Tablet S, Tablet P, the HTC One X, One X+, One S, and One V.

Second, PlayStation Mobile only works on up to three devices. This isn’t too much of a problem, since most users wouldn’t own more than a Vita, smartphone, and tablet at once, but for a service where its main selling point is playing games on multiple devices, you’d think they would allow unlimited devices or at least more than three.

Once you purchase games, and have PlayStation Mobile installed on three of your devices, you’re pretty much good to go. The games take advantage of both the Vita’s touchscreen and gaming controls, as well as the on-screen virtual DualShock controller for the Android devices. Right now, there are only 20 games to choose from, but we’re guessing that number will grow over time.

Sony Playstation Mobile store now live, offers crossplatform games and apps from $080

After what feels like a mighty long time since it was first announced, Sony’s cross-platform PlayStation Mobile store is now up and running with an initial line-up of games (plus one lonely-looking app) for the PlayStation Vita and PlayStation Certified Android devices. That hardware category currently includes Sony’s latest tablets and Xperias, plus HTC One-branded handsets — check the source link for a full list and installation instructions. So far, we can access PSM on the Vita via a new tab on the PlayStation Store, and we know that readers are having luck on devices in the US — including the Xperia Play — but the One X (both global and AT&T) has only given us error messages. If you succeed or fail, please post your results below and we’ll update accordingly.

Update: Okay, there are definitely teething problems on HTC devices and we’re reaching out for an explanation. Meanwhile, owners of the Nexus 7 and the Xperia Ion on AT&T bring happier tidings.

Is HTC finally making Sense?

After its annus horribilis of 2011, HTC‘s year is looking considerably better. A solid reception to the One series and a potentially key deal to be the face of Windows Phone 8 – seized right under Nokia’s nose, no less – is the dressing around hardware that is finally compelling: attractive, competitively priced, not embarrassed in specifications. Now, with the HTC One X+, there are signs that HTC is addressing its last big blot on the score-sheet: cloud services.

I’ve been a vocal critic of HTC’s cloud strategy in the past. The company had a head-start on mobile device sync, on remotely accessing a smartphone from the browser, of streaming video, of cloud gaming; it frittered each advantage away, either leaving them to wallow with little promotion and even less love, or seemingly forgot it had them altogether. “Quietly blundering” was the HTC strategy, culminating in the bizarrely handled axing of HTCSense.com services altogether.

But it’s not vitriol for vitriol’s own sake. In a market where Apple and Samsung have so definitively raised their game – and aren’t averse to combining competition on the shelves with some back-stabbing in the courtroom – any company that squanders any potential advantage deserves to be scolded.

HTC is now taking tentative steps back into the cloud. HTC Sense 4+, which debuts on the new One X+ flagship, reboots Sense online with “Get Started” – a way to easily configure your phone without having to actually paw and swipe at it. It’s front and center in the initial setup wizard and – as one of the few obvious changes in Sense 4+ – something HTC appears to be focusing on.

It’s very early days. Right now, “Get Started” is just that: a starting point for new Android users. You can set up your new device online – choose wallpaper, homescreen layout, and apps to download from Google Play – but you can’t then backup any changes you make on the phone itself. The sync is all one-way, a starting point (and a reset point) though there’s no real ongoing reason to keep visiting the online tool.

Nonetheless, I’m cautiously admiring of the new strategy. From what we’ve seen so far it’s being built out in recognition of HTC’s target audience: fresh smartphone users excited about their first device. The “set it up while you wait for it” approach could be a strong marketing point, playing on the geeky anticipation people feel when they’re waiting for a new toy. “Don’t just watch out the window for the mailman,” HTC should be telling people, “make your phone your own before it’s even in your hands.”

Sense online, in its old form, could’ve been a sticking point for HTC users. The value-add it brought should’ve been something HTC played on: don’t jump ship to iPhone, or another Android OEM, because then you lose out on contacts sync, on remote backup, on phone tracking and remote control in the comfort of your browser. Given the success of iCloud (and the persistent rumors that Samsung is developing its own, ahem, homage with S Cloud), HTC would be foolish not to revisit that strategy with Sense online 2.0.

HTC needs to be careful as it’s being expansive. Just as it needs to maintain sight of its “Hero Device” strategy, it also needs to deliver pitch-perfect cloud services. A 25GB DropBox bundle isn’t enough any more; users want holistic, integrated experiences they can’t get elsewhere. Apple has shown us that you needn’t throw the world at your audience, that it’s enough to give them a few core gems that are easily grasped and have clear value. Now, HTC needs to start looking at more than just one device after the next, and frame its line-up with a portfolio of cloud services that bring context and value users understand.
