HTC Proto photo leaked

We first talked about the HTC Proto back in July, and at the beginning of this month, the HTC Proto was allegedly spotted in a leak. Bear in mind that the HTC Proto might sound as though it is future forward, but this is actually an entry level handset, and it seems that the good people over at the Verge have managed to cobble together a picture of this yet to be announced smartphone. Touted to be a refresh of the HTC One V, the HTC Proto will definitely come with bumped up specifications, starting with the 4” touchscreen display that gives a greater visual area for you to work with, carrying a dual-core 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8225 S4 processor to boot.

As for the rest of the specifications that you might be interested in, they remain the same – we are looking at 512MB RAM as well as a 5-megapixel shooter located at the back. The HTC Proto, if this is the real deal, does seem to come with more rounded corners to give the entire handset a softer look. Will the HTC Proto be introduced at IFA in Berlin soon? Perhaps, but I would not hold my breath out for this one.

Rumors have been circulating that HTC was planning a mid-cycle replacement for the One V, the Proto, that would keep the line relevant in the face of some noticeably tougher competition. It may be more of a reality than a notch on the roadmap. As long as The Verge‘s press renders are authentic, the Proto should be an almost straightforward, international edition of the previously China-only New Desire V (T328w). HTC wouldn’t be reinventing the wheel — it would reportedly add a much-needed second core to the 1GHz processor but keep the same 5-megapixel camera, 4GB of storage and 7.2Mbps 3G as the smartphone’s early 2012 prequel; though we’d imagine the second SIM slot would be nixed. If, where and when the Proto shows up is still left to the imagination, though. Next week’s IFA show is a tempting target for a late 2012 release, but there’s no hard and fast rule that any introduction has to coincide with a major event.

HTC Proto in the works?

HTC logoIf you’re looking out for the next HTC handset, it might be a mid-range offering that falls into its Desire range of phones. According to the folks at Stuff.TV who were tipped off by an anonymous HTC source, the next Desire phone – codenamed HTC Proto – will feature a 1GHz dual-core processor, 768MB of RAM, and 4GB of internal storage. It will pack a 3.5″ (800 x 480) display, run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (with HTC Sense of course), feature a microSD card slot, a 5-megapixel rear camera, and a 1,650mAh battery.

No word on how the phone will look like, but we wouldn’t be surprised if it kept HTC’s classic Desire shape that was used for most of its phones in the past. Pricing and release date are yet to be revealed but the phone is expected to arrive later this year. It doesn’t sound too far-fetched to be a rumor, though we feel that HTC doesn’t need yet another mid-range device in its lineup. Then again, choices are always good for consumers. Stay tuned for more details.
