Global version of HTC One S receiving Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean update

htc one s jellybean 12 26 12 01 Global version of HTC One S receiving Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean updateGood news HTC One S owners, if you own the global variant of the handset, you might be pleased to learn that the Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean update is reportedly making its way onto your handset. The update was said to be pegged for a release sometime in October, but given that it’s only rolling out now, we guess it was late. Then again we guess better late than never, plus it seems like a great way to end 2012, doesn’t it? Unfortunately this update appears to be available only for the global version of the One S, which means that those of you who own a carrier-locked version of the HTC One S in the US, well you guys might have to wait since updates will need to be carrier-approved before being pushed out. If you own the global HTC One S but have yet to receive the notification, be patient as we’re sure the update is being rolled out in batches, but in the mean time you can always try pulling it manually by checking your phone for updates in the Settings menu. If you have received it, let us know in the comments below.

HTC One S global models finally gorging on Jelly Bean 4.1.1

HTC One S global models finally gorging on Jelly Bean 411

HTC One S owners are seeing the light at the end of the Jelly Bean tunnel, as Android 4.1.1 is now being pushed out to the global models. The company originally promised it way back in July, with rumblings about an October arrival as well, but up until now there’s been no joy. HTC One X global owners started to see that Jelly Bean release last month, and we can confirm that it’s now come to our very own HTC One S handset too, as the image above proves. XDA Developers also caught wind of a direct HTC link, which will finally bring the extra fluidity of Google’s butter to the mid-range handset. There’s no word yet about US carrier-flavored versions, but it wouldn’t hurt to check your own handset, or XDA’s CID list at the MC link below.

HTC Droid DNA Advert From Verizon Touts Its ‘Extra Sensory’ Features

The term extra-sensory is used to describe something that is beyond or outside the ordinary senses. And it is probably the best word to describe HTC’s Droid DNA, at least for Verizon. The carrier has just posted an advert of the HTC Droid DNA on YouTube and it details some of the best features of the device. (more…)

Editorial: All I want for Christmas is a new HTC Nexus

Editorial All I want for Christmas is a new HTC Nexus

To this day, I remain in love with my HTC One X, but its fate has already been sealed. Soon enough, this fast and beautiful smartphone is going to find a new life in a drawer that holds my spare change, sunglasses, checkbook and various receipts. Is it wrong to relegate one of the best phones on the planet to my stash of odds and ends? Perhaps, but the past few months have taught me that excellent hardware alone doesn’t make a device that’s sufficient for enthusiasts.

Like many, I’ve been waiting for an upgrade to Jelly Bean ever since HTC first promised it back in July. I have no doubt that the company is working hard to prepare the Android 4.1 update for its customers, but the software is already past its expiration date. Google has moved onto something better. Quite frankly, I’m no longer willing to perpetually live behind the curve. I want to play with new toys as they come out, and that’s wholly impossible outside of the Nexus ecosystem.

Why should HTC care about my personal revelation, or the desire of anyone else who wants to stay on the cutting edge? Well, I’d like to offer the simple suggestion that enthusiasts matter. Take any introductory marketing class and you’ll learn the early adopters — in other words, the nerds who like playing with the very latest stuff — set trends and influence others. Companies should be falling over themselves to cater to this influential segment, and yet within the Android ecosystem, that’s the exception to the rule. There’s only one device for sale today that’s suitable for enthusiasts, and it’s high time for that to change.

HTC Reportedly Cutting New Smartphone Models, Shipment Volumes

htc-slipping

HTC may be making some of the best smartphones (including the HTC One X series and Windows Phone 8X devices) but that isn’t stopping it from facing some fiscal trouble, according to a new report. Asian supply chain watcher Digitimes (via BGR) says that HTC is cutting back on new models and Q1 shipments of existing devices as it tightens its purse strings.

Normally, it’s hard to put too much stock in Digitimes-sourced reports given the publication’s spotty track record. But despite its many misses, it has had hits that indicate some of its supply chain sources are well-placed, and this makes sense based on what we’ve heard before about HTC’s current fortunes.

Recently HTC announced it would be dropping the 8S from its U.S. lineup entirely, opting instead to market the down-market Windows Phone 8-powered device only in a few other global markets. Then, a second report suggested HTC was also scrapping plans for a future large-screened Windows Phone 8 handset, ostensibly because it wouldn’t be able to support high-enough screen resolution to make it worthwhile.

Whatever HTC’s reasons for streamlining its product offerings, we’ve seen that it’s already doing that. And the company has a lot riding on the performance of recently released devices. Its quarterly results for the last four reporting periods have each shown net revenue drops, after a big boost in Q3 2011. And the company’s outlook for Q4 2012 predicts further a further revenue fall.

HTC’s One X+ and Droid DNA could put some wind back in its sales in terms of smartphone shipments, but it doesn’t look like it’ll have the same kind of success on its hands provided by the original HTC One X.

In the meantime, the reality is that with successive quarterly results like the ones HTC has been seeing lately, reining in product plans is likely a move the company will have to make if it hasn’t already. It’s a shame, because the devices they are making are category-leading in many cases, but that doesn’t seem to be making much of an impact, especially in the U.S. market.

Verizon “employee edition” HTC Windows Phone 8X spotted in grey/lime finish

Working for Verizon sure has its perks, and one of them it would seem is the ability to get their hands on limited edition devices designed for Verizon employees. What this means is that for us regular folks, it is possible that enterprising Verizon employees might buy those phones and then put them up on eBay or Craigslist to sell for higher, targeting customers who don’t mind paying extra to own a relatively unique device. The good news is that if you were hoping for a limited edition Windows Phone, it seems that Verizon has an “employee edition” of the HTC Windows Phone 8X, and as you can see above comes in a grey finish with lime highlights, which we have to admit is pretty cool. If anything it’s certainly a departure from the bright and funky colors that Windows Phone 8 devices seem to sport these days. As usual these devices are individually numbered to showcase their limited availability, and perhaps to keep tabs on who bought what. We’re not sure if all employees are able to get their hands on HTC 8X, but if this is a phone you don’t mind owning, be sure to keep an eye out for eBay or Craigslist listings!

HTC EVO 4G LTE Gets Stock Rooted Jelly Bean ROM

Hmmm, it did not take too long for the viperboy to take a look at the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update that was released for the HTC EVO 4G LTE before tinkering with it, and as a result of his modifications and programming wizardry, he has managed to roll out two flashable stock, rooted Jelly Bean ROMs in bot odex and deodex flavors. Needless to say, there are changes made to it compared to the stock Jelly Bean ROM, including the installation of SuperSU that enables the system to be mounted R/W, while introducing init.d support alongside BusyBox. Apart from that, most of the other stuff remained the same.

Folks who have already rooted your HTC EVO 4G LTE would do well to know that this is the fastest method to obtain and experience stock Jelly Bean. As with any other ROM releases by enthusiasts, there would be some bugs or glitches to look out for, and so far the known bugs specific to the viperboy distro include a wiper application force closing, while some folks have reported that the proximity sensor no longer works properly in the process of a call. Anyone willing to give it a go?
