HTC Droid DNA headed for Verizon Wireless

Verizon Wireless just announced that they will be offering the HTC Droid DNA, which is touted to be the highest resolution Android-powered smartphone to date. What is that you said about the iPhone’s vaunted Retina Display? It is no match for the HTC Droid DNA that sports a higher pixel density, and also a far larger display at 5” with Full HD resolution support. Needless to say, the HTC Droid DNA is the flagship device of HTC, and it looks set to make its mark this holiday season among smartphone buyers.

HTC used to be on the cutting edge of smartphone offerings with their Desire range, but time has seen them lose out on other more competitive companies, with Samsung leading the pack where top of the line Android-powered devices are concerned. Well, the HTC Droid DNA will certainly drag the Taiwanese company back into contention, and hopefully it will be able to win back confidence among smartphone users who are looking to upgrade their devices later this year.

Verizon Wireless Chief Marketing Officer Tami Erwin said, “We think it’s poised to be a real blockbuster for the holidays and certainly into 2013.” Just how much will Verizon Wireless price the HTC Droid DNA? Well, it looks priced to move at $199 a pop, where you will need to sign up for a two-year contract of course. The HTC Droid DNA will go up on sale this coming November 21st, which is one day before Thanksgiving, marking the unofficial start of the shopping season.

As a refresher, the device itself will come with a generous 5” display as well as boast high-resolution image quality for photographs and video. Boasting a pixel density of 440 pixels per inch, it outdoes Apple’s iPhone 5 by far and large (which has a pixel density of 326ppi) and the Samsung Galaxy S3 at 306ppi.

HTC Desire X review: one last hurrah for a former flagship?

HTC Desire X review One last hurrah for HTC's former flagship

Before we go into more detail on HTC’s Desire X, cast your memory back to a time before the outfit announced the “One” line of Android phones. You may remember names such as Wildfire, Sensation, Rhyme and, of course, Desire. Likewise, you may also remember a certain amount of company talk about its plans to simplify its Android offerings, and turn out phones at a slower, more considered pace. So, it was a little confusing when we first heard about the Desire X. HTC already had an affordable phone, the One V, but seemingly deemed it not affordable enough — and the Desire C already fills the most entry-level position. With a 1GHz dual-core processor, a WVGA (800 x 480) display and a 5-megapixel camera, the specs are from the same era as the OG Desire, but with a slightly more current price: €299 in Europe. So, stripped of any “One” branding, but bearing a name that many will remember fondly, is the Desire X a good phone that’s been reinvented, or just a throwback from HTC of old? We spent some time in its company to find out for ourselves.

HTC Desire SV To Arrive In Europe Soon

The HTC Desire SV, a smartphone that one should not mix it up with for the HTC One SV that comes with LTE connectivity, has just been announced officially in Russia, meaning it ought to be made available to the masses before the month is over. This would mean that other European markets should be on the receiving end of the HTC Desire SV in due time as well. Just what kind of specifications does the HTC Desire SV to make it worthy of our attention? Good thing it comes with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich right out of the box, in addition to a 4.3-inch WVGA display with Gorilla Glass 2, Beats Audio for superior audio quality, Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity, an 8-megapixel camera at the back, a 1GHz dual-core processor, 768MB RAM, and 4GB of internal memory.

Expect to fork out around €370 for the HTC Desire SV in Mother Russia, where the main selling point of this device would be the fact that this is a dual SIM smartphone – the second of its kind to hit Europe after the HTC Desire V that was first introduced in June earlier this year. We do expect to see the HTC Desire SV arrive in select Asian markets as well eventually.

HTC Deluxe leaks, could be the global version of the HTC Droid DNA

The mystery behind HTC’s Droid DNA ended early this week when Verizon finally announced it. We even did a hands-on of the device in case you missed it. But one question remains – will HTC introduce the Droid DNA outside the U.S. anytime soon? Well, apparently EvLeaks holds the answer. The surreptitious informant has just posted an image of a familiar HTC smartphone on Twitter, along with the caption “HTC Deluxe, global edition.”

Now that’s a head turner because if you can still recall, we’ve been hearing about an HTC device with the codename DLX in the past. The leaked image could be it. We could be looking at the international version of the Droid DNA here. Unfortunately, as with other previous leaks, the details are very scarce. We can only bet on the “HTC Deluxe, global edition” caption for now. The HTC Droid DNA on Verizon features a 5-inch 1080p display, a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, LTE connectivity, an 8-megapixel camera, a 2500mAh battery, and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. It’s possible that the HTC Deluxe will inherit these features as well.

HTC Deluxe press render reportedly leaks, spreads Droid DNA worldwide

When the HTC Droid DNA leaked out into the wild, we’d learned that the DLX codename was really shorthand for “Deluxe,” a title that was also attached to non-Verizon models like the J Butterfly. If @evleaks is correct, that’s because HTC fully intends to have a reference version of the Deluxe on the market: the frequent rumor source has posted what looks to be a press image of the international model. There isn’t much of a surprise if you’ve seen the Droid DNA, as it preserves all the red trim while replacing the Verizon logo with HTC’s own. Most other details are left out — there’s no release date or hardware differences to pick out — but the image may be a clue that those of us who live outside of Japan and the US could get own 1080p phone before too long.

HTC Deluxe aka global DROID DNA leaks

With Verizon’s DROID DNA searing eyeballs and driving grown Android fans to tears, HTC lovers outside of the US have been eagerly anticipating the global edition of the 5-inch 1080p phone. That’s looking like it might be nearing, if a leaked promo shot of the HTC Deluxe – the international version of the DNA – courtesy of arch insider evleaks is anything to go by; the device is obviously free of Verizon branding, but it also lacks any indication of whether it will be a 3G or 4G device outside of the US.

Instead, there’s just a WiFi network signal, not a 3G or 4G status indicator in the notification bar. While Verizon’s LTE coverage is increasingly complete, 4G networks in Europe are less comprehensive, and there are several different bands in use which can make creating a single phone to satisfy all carrier needs frustrating.

Still, given the flagship allure of the Deluxe/DNA, we’d be very surprised if there wasn’t an LTE version for at least some locations. HTC already provides UK carrier EE with a 4G model – the HTC One XL – and has been cagey about the potential of a One X+ LTE version, telling us back at the smartphone’s launch that there were no current plans for adding 4G to its abilities.

That could well be because the next EE 4G HTC will be the Deluxe, and that’s not a prospect we would necessarily argue with. In addition to the 5-inch Full HD display there’s a quadcore Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 2GB of RAM, and cameras tuned for the sort of photos phones are called upon to capture: f/2.0 on the back for improved low-light performance, and an 88-degree wide angle lens on the front for fitting more people into group shots.

When, exactly, HTC will come clean with the global version of the DROID DNA is still a mystery; in the US, it will hit shelves on November 21. More details in our hands-on and in the video below.

PSA: Verizon returns to Windows Phone today, HTC 8X and Nokia Lumia 822 go on sale

Nokia Lumia 822 hands-on

In some senses, we’ve been waiting for this moment since last May: Verizon is back to selling brand-new Windows Phone hardware. Starting today, the carrier is offering both the $200 HTC Windows Phone 8X as its flagship and the $100 Nokia Lumia 822 for the more cost-conscious. Both Windows Phone 8 devices have a slight spin on the stock formula. Verizon’s 8X is currently the only variant of the phone that supports wireless charging, if you’re in the position of choosing between Big Red’s network and AT&T’s; the Lumia 822’s differences are more cosmetic, but they may appeal to those who aren’t fans of the boxier 810 and 820. The only immediate caveat is a very monochromatic selection that won’t improve until the blue and red 8X editions start shipping from next week onwards.

Nokia Goes To Court With HTC Over 32 Patents

It was just yesterday when we looked at how there was the Phone Wars parody, where the Nokia 3310 was seemingly indestructible. Well, something that is far more realistic today has hit the news, which would be Nokia bringing HTC to court over a disputed 32 patents. According to Foss Patents, Nokia wants to sue HTC over a total of 32 patents across US as well as Europe. The kind of ground that these patents will cover include a range of technologies from “calendar-display apparatus, and associated method, for a mobile terminal” to “method of operating a navigation system using images” and “communication network terminal supporting a plurality of applications”.

A quartet of court hearings, which will include three full trials, have been scheduled to hear Nokia’s case against HTC before 2012 is over – meaning there are just a six more weeks or so before everything is done in the courtroom. Foss intellectual property analyst, Florian Mueller, claims that the Taiwanese manufacturer might be backed into a corner here, saying, “Based on how both parties fared against Apple, it’s easy to see that Nokia will win this and will most likely receive a higher per-unit royalty from HTC than Apple receives from HTC.” Could we be looking at a huge payday for Nokia this time around?

HTC Droid DNA – highest resolution Android smartphone yet

Forget about Apple’s iPhone 5 with its Retina Display, the best iPhone yet has already been dethroned in terms of its pixel density (other aspects of the iPhone 5 have long been surpassed by other devices such as screen size, NFC capability, the works) thanks to efforts of the HTC Droid DNA which is made available on Verizon Wireless. Touted to be the ultimate smartphone with a full HD 1080p display, the HTC Droid DNA will be available as a Verizon Wireless exclusive, and will hit retail stores nationwide from November 21st onward.

Sporting a true 1080p HD Super LCD display with Corning Gorilla Glass 2 protection, we are talking about a stunning 440 pixels per inch (PPI) on a 5-inch display – definitely unprecedented for a smartphone, where you get maximum pixel clarity available on such a mobile device. Specially designed to accentuate the incredible display, the deep black, soft-touch back remains understated, while there is a metallic red camera bezel alongside a red microgrill pattern of the sidewalls.

Underneath the hood lies a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core 1.5GHz processor, HTC Sense 4+, Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean as the operating system of choice, 2GB RAM, LTE connectivity, and an 8-megapixel f/2.0 28mm wide-angle lens with 5-level automatic flash, backside illuminated sensor (BSI), and superfast autofocus. In front, there is a best-in-class 2.1-megapixel, f/2.0, 88-degree, ultra-wide angle, front-facing camera.

Not only that, the HTC Droid DNA also comes with a unique, 2.55-volt, built-in headset amplifier as well as dedicated amp for the external rear-speaker, which will help boost the audio signal to deliver crystal clear sound while your ears experience less distortion, never mind if you are listening to your favorite tunes at maximum, ear-splitting volume. The merging of amplified hardware and the rich, authentic, studio-quality sound of Beats Audio enables music to be heard the way the artist intended. Of course, if you were to play games or watch video too, it would sound enhanced.
