Apple and HTC finally make peace with 10-year licensing agreement

Apple-HTCBoth Apple and Samsung are still at each other’s throats in the courts, but it looks like as far as the beef that Apple and HTC had with each other, well it seems that it might have been put on hold at least for the next 10 years. In what we can only describe as a milestone, it seems that in “global settlement”, both Apple and HTC have agreed to dismiss all their complaints against each other under a 10-year license agreement. This agreement will cover both current and future patents held by both companies and while the terms of the settlement is confidential (unsurprisingly so), HTC told The Verge that they do not expect the settlement with Apple to have “any adverse material impact on the financials of the company,” which we can only assume is a good thing.

What this also means is that future HTC devices will be able to incorporate some of the features that Apple alleged they infringed upon, such as slide to unlock and universal search to name a few. If you can recall, it was a few months ago that some of HTC’s phones were delayed from entering the US due to ban won by Apple. The Taiwanese company had to compromise by introducing an update to their phones that would remove some of the offending features, which would then allow their phones to be sold in the US. In any case it looks like that’s all behind Apple and HTC now, and we hope that Apple will be able to come to a similar resolution with their other competitors like Samsung and Motorola.

Verizon confirms Droid DNA on its Droid Does portal, promising 'unboxing' on November 19th

Last we checked, there are about six days between Verizon / HTC’s press event in New York City and November 19th. Which, by most counts, should be just enough time for the two companies to properly announce a phone, get it out to sales channels, and start moving ’em into the hands of consumers. HTC’s Droid DNA has been leaked to death at this point, but a new mention of the product on VZW’s ‘Droid Does’ portal all but confirms the true nature of Tuesday’s event. For those willing to wait until November 19th, the carrier’s promising an internet unboxing through its Google+ page — for those who tune into our site, we’ll get you one much sooner. Hit up the source if you’re intrigued by intrigue, but don’t go poking around for pricing or confirmed specifications.

Apple and HTC End Patent Dispute and Agree to Play Nice For a Decade

Like Samsung, HTC has also been having some arguments with Apple over patents. But in this case, the argument hasn’t escalated to a billion dollar lawsuit. Instead, it just ended rather peacefully. Apple and HTC agreed to quit fighting by signing a 10-year licensing deal covering past and future patents. More »

Apple and HTC reach global legal settlement

It would seem that the patent wars between Apple and HTC are no more as both camps have released a statement detailing a 10 year settlement between them. This is a monumental development for not just the two companies themselves, but for the legal universe surrounding technology and gadgets on the whole. As for HTC and Apple, they’ve made it clear that this agreements means they’ll be able to focus on product innovation for a long time to come.

The two groups reported from Taipei and Cupertino with news that today, November 11th, 2012 (depending on where you live, of course), they’ve reached a “global settlement” that will take them both out of battles between one another for a full ten years at least. The agreement they’ve made will be covering not just current patents, but past and future patents as well. Both HTC and Apple have sent out short comments on the matter as well.

HTC and Apple have reached a global settlement that includes the dismissal of all current lawsuits and a ten-year license agreement. The license at hand extends to current and future patents held by both parties. The terms of the settlement are confidential.

“HTC is pleased to have resolved its dispute with Apple, so HTC can focus on innovation instead of litigation,” said Peter Chou, CEO of HTC.

“We are glad to have reached a settlement with HTC,” said Tim Cook, CEO of Apple. “We will continue to stay laser focused on product innovation.”

This agreement was accompanied by a note “All patent litigation between the companies dismissed.” Now we’ve got to wonder if this means that further agreements will be had between titans such as Samsung, LG, Microsoft, and the rest, or if this is simply one perfect storm for the betterment of these two companies. Specific details of the agreement are not (yet) public, but both groups have certainly made it clear that this is a very good thing for the future of device manufacturing and development.

As it’s not specified, we must also assume that this agreement fits both software and hardware patents, this possibly leading toward an agreement with Google in the future for their Android mobile operating system that HTC makes use of in their smartphone devices. As it stands, Google and Apple have not made any statement to substantiate such an assumption – stay tuned!

HTC and Apple settle all patent issues, enter 10-year licensing deal

HTC and Apple have just confirmed that they’ve settled all of their ongoing patent disputes, ending all of their lawsuits and opting into a 10-year licensing agreement. To refresh your memory, this particular saga begin back on March 2nd, 2010, when Apple filed lawsuits with the International Trade Commission and US District Court. That initial filing covered 20 patents related to iOS, which it accused HTC of infringing upon, and since then it has only been an ever-expanding battle. Essentially all the juicy details of the settlement between the companies are completely under wraps, but both HTC’s CEO, Peter Chou and Apple’s man-in-charge, Tim Cook have issued brief words for the official joint statement (the whole of which can be seen after the break):

HTC is pleased to have resolved its dispute with Apple, so HTC can focus on innovation instead of litigation, said Peter Chou, CEO of HTC.

We are glad to have reached a settlement with HTC, said Tim Cook, CEO of Apple. “We will continue to stay laser focused on product innovation.

Notably, this settlement applies to all past and future patents for the companies, meaning we shouldn’t be witnessing the two fight it out in court for years to come — at least on the patent front. Hopefully we’ll soon begin to see more of the same with other ongoing patent wars — Apple vs. Samsung, anyone?

HTC Windows Phone 8X for AT&T: what’s different?

HTC 8X for AT&T what's different

We recently reviewed the global (HSPA+) version of HTC’s Windows Phone 8X, the first handset to cross our desks running Microsoft’s newly minted mobile OS. Starting today you’ll be able to purchase HTC’s 8X for AT&T, which features the same exquisite design but adds LTE and a dash of carrier flavor. Pricing with a two-year commitment is $100 for the 8GB model (available in California Blue and Limelight Yellow) and $200 for the 16GB version (blue only) — in comparison, the global (HSPA+) phone sells for about $560 unsubsidized and unlocked. We spent a few days with the 8X for AT&T and while it’s pretty much identical to its global sibling, there are a few differences worth mentioning. Hit the break to find out more.

Verizon says HTC 8X will ship ‘by 11/13’, red model due on the 21st (Update: Lumia 822 too)

Waiting to get a taste of HTC’s first Windows Phone 8 device on Verizon? Big Red’s website says you won’t have to wait beyond next week for your first shot, indicating HTC 8X pre-orders ($199 on 2-year contract, $549 retail) will ship by November 13th for the black or blue models, although the red version is held up until the 21st. That’s the same day the two companies have an event scheduled in NYC — now the only question is if the Droid DNA will make an appearance. That date is in line with what’s been revealed of other carrier’s plans for HTC’s Windows Phone 8X, with T-Mobile on the 14th, Bell on the 15th and Rogers on the 12th.

Update: It looks like the $99 Lumia 822 we’ve had some hands-on time with has also been listed by Verizon, and with the same release date. Decisions, decisions.

[Thanks, Matt]

Microsoft Canada claims HTC 8X, Nokia Lumia 920 ship in earnest to Rogers on November 12th

Microsoft Canada slips word that HTC 8X, Nokia Lumia 920 may ship in earnest on November 12th

American carriers have almost been tripping over themselves to pin down release dates for their Windows Phone 8 devices, but we’ve heard precious little for those north of the border. Microsoft Canada has at last showed its hand: the company’s Facebook page briefly showed that Rogers would offer both the HTC Windows Phone 8X and full-scale shipments of the Nokia Lumia 920 on November 12th. While Rogers will only confirm to us so far that the HTC 8X is arriving sometime “next week,” the post suggests Canada might get HTC’s leading device slightly ahead of the US, on top of just edging out Americans on the Nokia flagship. Any truth to the exact timing could satisfy those who think even the wait for Bell’s rumored November 15th launch might be too long.
