Android remote data-wipe hack still exists: update your software now

If you’ve not heard of the recent discovery of some rather concerning data-wipe vulnerabilities with the Samsung Galaxy S III specifically, it’s time to read up – your phone could be hit as well. Developer / researcher Ravi Borgaonkar has found several devices of all kinds to be venerable to the less-than-pleasing way in which hackers may be able to jump right into your device and knock it out entirely. What you’re going to want to do as soon as possible is pick your device up and update your software as fast as you can.

The reason you’re going to want to be concerned about this situation is not that there are hackers out there right this minute actively attempting to exploit you, but that the software break that’s been found here would make it a lot easier if someone wanted to try. What the warning here includes is a note on how something so simple as a link on the web, clicked through your smartphone, could trigger an attachment that’s capable of destroying your device’s memory.

This break has actively gone through on early production versions of the Samsung Galaxy S III and more devices are at risk – in theory – from Motorola, HTC, Sony, and Samsung. That’s pretty much the whole spread of popular manufacturers with their own custom software additions to Android. Incidentally, it appears that the Samsung Galaxy Nexus was never venerable because of its Google-only software build.

What you’re going to want to do to stay out of the way of danger is to check your software to see if you’ve got an update waiting for you. Most often this exists inside your settings, all the way down at the bottom under Phone Info (or something similar), and Software Update. Each smartphone manufacturer has a slightly different place for this update, but they’re pretty nearby one another, so make it happen!

More HTC One X+ photos surface

The other day we reported that thanks to a leaked O2 brochure, the specs of the upcoming HTC One X+ was leaked. Well it looks like the folks at Pocket-Lint have managed to get their hands on what appears to photos of the device itself and based on what we’re looking at, well it seems that the rumors were right on the money when they said that the phone will greatly resemble the HTC One X, albeit with its specs tweaked slightly, although the logo of Beats Audio on the One X+ is different from older HTC phones.

As for its specs and in case you might have forgotten, the HTC One X+ is rumored to sport a 4.7” display, a 1.7GHz quad-core NVIDIA Tegra-3 processor under the hood with 1GB of RAM, 64GB of internal storage, an 8MP rear-facing camera, Beats Audio integration, free 25GB of cloud storage via Dropbox and will come with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on board. Still no word on when it will be available but we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled nonetheless.

The New HTC One X+ Looks a Lot Like the HTC One X [Rumors]

Pocket-lint is reporting that it’s been sent images of the new HTC One X+ from a trusted source and… it looks almost identical to the existing HTC One X. More »

HTC One X+ specs leaked in O2 brochure

Earlier this month we reported that according to a leak, the HTC One X+ had its specs leaked. If you’re not a fan of leaks and approach them with a healthy dose of skepticism, we don’t blame you, but if the One X+ is a phone that you wouldn’t mind getting your hands on, UK carrier O2 seems to have leaked the specs of the device in a brochure, giving some credence to the earlier leaks as well as giving some additional details that weren’t known before.

For starters it has been revealed that the One X+ will feature a 1.7GHz quad-core processor (earlier leak suggested 1.6GHz quad-core, and 1.7GHz single-core). It will also come with 64GB of internal storage (leak suggested 32GB) although we’re not sure if it’s up to 64GB, or if 64GB will be the only option. It also revealed that it will come with an 8MP camera, 25GB of free Dropbox storage, Beats Audio integration and will come with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on board. O2 UK has priced it at £479.99 on a pay as you go plan, but no word on how much that might translate to when (and if) it arrives on T-Mobile’s network stateside.

HTC One X+ leaks with blink-and-you-miss-it changes [Update: Single 64GB partition]

What does a “+” get you? If it’s the HTC One X+, freshly leaked once more today, then it doesn’t seem like a huge amount; new photos show minor aesthetic changes – when you’re most excited about a new Beats Audio logo, you know it’s time for the weekend – with Pocket-lint‘s sneaky pre-announcement images otherwise confirming only that the One X+ will look much like its One X predecessor.

That means the same 4.7-inch display, apparently, and the same neatly tailored polycarbonate plastic chassis. Inside, according to leaks earlier in the month, will be a slightly faster processor than before: a Tegra 3+ AP36 with a 1.6GHz clock speed (or, in single-core mode, up to 1.7GHz). That will be paired with 1GB of RAM and 32GB of ROM.

OS is tipped to be Android 4.1 Jelly Bean – about time, given Google’s latest OS has been on the scene for some months now – with HTC’s Sense 4.5 interface strapped on top. A 1,800 mAh battery, just as in the original One X, is expected to be doing power duty, and the pogopins on the back for charging cradles are clear to see.

In short, the One X+ is shaping up to be a minor tweak rather than an all-out refresh, likely running a little faster than the One X but otherwise offering much the same user-experience. If HTC is sensible, it will have spent its time tweaking power management, as rival devices – such as the Galaxy S III, with a 2,100 mAh pack – offer considerably larger batteries.

Update: GSM Arena spotted an early listing of the One X+ in a printed O2 catalog, which suggests the new HTC will have 64GB of internal storage and indeed run Jelly Bean on a 1.7GHz processor. MoDaCo claims the 64GB will be partitioned as a single, huge chunk, too, unlike the split arrangement of the One X. O2 lists the One X+ at £479.99 on pre-pay, with contract deals also expected.

T-Mobile’s HTC One S reportedly receiving Android 4.0.4 ICS update

Good news HTC One S users, if you bought your device from T-Mobile, there have been reports that the latest Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich has begun rolling out to you guys. There has not been any official word from T-Mobile just yet, so we’re not sure what sort of change will be made. However according to some users who have posted what they have noticed, the update has improved stability with connectivity across the board, such as WiFi, cellular data and even Bluetooth, aiding with signal fluctuation and whatnot. Since there has been no official announcement, there is a chance that this could be a soft rollout, or it could be rolled out in stages so fret not if you haven’t received yours yet. You can always try to pull it manually by going to your phone’s settings and checking for System Updates. In the meantime for T-Mobile HTC One S owners who have received the update, let us know in the comments below on how it is treating you!

HTC One X+ with T-Mobile’s branding spotted in leaked photo

If you are looking forward to the HTC One X+, it seems that T-Mobile could be the carrier you will be able to pick it up from, at least that’s what previous rumors have suggested. If you’re not the sort that buys into rumors and would rather see it to believe it, you’re in luck as @evleaks has managed to get their hands on a photo of the HTC One X+ with none other than T-Mobile’s branding on it. Earlier rumors have suggested that the HTC One X+ for T-Mobile has been delayed due to testing reasons, and now it has even been suggested that it could have been cancelled or delayed indefinitely.

Hopefully the photo above is evidence that the phone is still on its way to being released on T-Mobile’s network, because if it isn’t, it sure is quite the tease! In any case @evleaks has been pretty spot on with their leaks so far, revealing the Nokia Lumia 920 in all of its glory prior to its announcement, so there is a good chance that the photo above is genuine. Either way we’ll still keep our fingers crossed, so if the HTC One X+ is a phone you have been anticipating, check back with us at a later date for more updates.

O2′s next HTC phone will not be shipped with wall chargers as a means to go green

A lot of companies are focusing on going green these days, some of this is accomplished by using materials which aren’t harmful to the environment, or by packaging their products in boxes that are made from sustainable materials. Now it looks like HTC is interested in doing their part for the environment and together with UK carrier O2, it looks like if you were to buy a HTC phone from O2 in the future, you can expect it to not come with a wall plug that you can use to charge your phone with. SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: September 26, 2012

We’ve made it through hump day, which means only two more work days to go before the weekend arrives again. Yesterday, we found out about a hack that was resetting Samsung Galaxy S IIIs to their factory settings. Samsung said that the security hole had since been fixed, but today we heard that the remote hack isn’t limited to just Samsung devices. The iPhone 5 might be heading to China soon, and we heard that Apple’s new Lightning connector isn’t identical on both sides. Google maps is rumored to be hitting iOS 6 by the end of the year, which goes hand-in-hand with new report that claims Apple ditched Google Maps because it doesn’t offer turn-by-turn navigation.

Facebook has been axing fake accounts left and right today, while we learned that the Galaxy S III will soon be launching at MetroPCS. Apple has been suspiciously ordering large quantities of carbon fiber, and RIM experienced a stock boost today after its BlackBerry 10 presentation yesterday. Xbox Music pricing details “leaked” out today, and Amazon has launched Vine.com, a new shopping service for those concerned about the environment.

Nintendo gave us a list of 23 titles that will launch alongside the Wii U on November 18, while Boost Mobile announced the LG Venice (which looks awfully similar to the LG Optimus L7). Facebook has implemented Dropbox integration for sharing among groups, and a new Nook video is taking a few shots at both Netflix and Amazon. O2 and HTC announced today that they will be selling an incoming, yet-unannounced smartphone without a charger, seemingly to cut down on the amount of spare chargers floating around out there.

Humble Indie Bundle 6 has a bunch of new games on offer for those who pay more than the average, and Activision delivered new details on the Zombies mode in Black Ops II today. Google launched Google Play services for Android developers today, which allows them to integrate a number of Google services into their apps. Finally tonight, Chris Davies takes a closer look at the fight ahead of the Nook HD and Nook HD+ tablets, Chris Burns has a new review of the HiddenRadio Wireless Speaker, and Ewdison Then has reviews of both the Monster Inspiration Headphones and the BMW X1 Crossover, so be sure to give all of those a look!
