HTC Endeavour C2 points to potential One X refresh

Last week we heard word that an improved version of the HTC One X was heading to T-Mobile USA, returning to the NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor from Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 chip and pairing it with Jelly Bean. Now word comes from Stuff.tv that HTC is planning something similar with the international version of the device, with the updated model codenamed “Endeavour C2.” The HTC One X originally carried the Endeavour codename, with details of this new device suggesting it will be a small refresh of the popular handset.

The improved version of the HTC One X is expected to retain its NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor, but it will receive a bump in clock speed to 1.7Ghz. The battery will also be improved – we’re assuming HTC will increase the capacity – and a new color option will be on offer, which should please those looking for something other than white or grey.

The handset will be bundled with Beats headphones just like the HTC One X and other HTC phones, with Stuff also hearing word that current HTC accessories will continue to work without any trouble with the refreshed model, suggesting that the design of the handset won’t be radically different. Meanwhile, HTC will add ClearVoice to “improve call quality”, which sounds similar to HD Voice offered on certain carriers’ handsets.

Finally, HTC Watch 2, an improved version of the company’s video streaming service, will be bundled with the new handset. Pricing hasn’t been finalized, but Stuff believes UK carriers will offer the refreshed model on tariffs £5 more expensive than the current HTC One X. The handset is expected to be released around October 1st, just in time to go toe-to-toe with the Galaxy Note II and the next iPhone.

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: August 7, 2012

Welcome to Tuesday evening, folks. Apple and Samsung’s patent suit is still going on, but today we didn’t get too much news about it. Samsung said that the high return rates of the Galaxy Tab had to with the devices malfunctioning, and not because customers were confusing it for the iPad like Apple claimed Apple’s expert witness, Peter Bressler, said today that the iPhone brought on a “crisis of design” over at Samsung headquarters, and we found out just how much Mr. Bressler is getting paid to sit on the stand and testify for Apple. Spoiler alert: it’s a lot of money, and now we’re on the lookout for “expert witness” job openings.

Just as Acer told Microsoft that launching Surface was a bad idea, we caught wind of some Microsoft job listings that point to next generation Surface devices. We also received reports that Windows 8 can’t boot directly to the desktop, which is going to be annoying for those who were hoping to bypass the tile-based start screen entirely. More bad news for HTC today, as it reported that July revenues dropped 45%, and Motorola has started teasing a new 4G LTE capable smartphone, so be sure to keep an eye out for that one.

Some developers are thinking that we might be getting an increased screen resolution with the next iPhone, and it looks like Apple is at least somewhat partially stuck in 2008, as it decided to Rickroll developers in the iOS 6 beta 4 changelog. Apple has also opted to pull its Genius ads, so if you liked the exploits of the Apple Genius as he tried to turn consumers into Apple fans, you’re going to have to resort to YouTube to watch. Facebook has rolled out real-money gambling games in the UK, and Amazon has apparently fixed the security hole that led to a massive breach for one unfortunate journalist.

We’ve got quite a bit of gaming news today, as OUYA gave us some new renders of the Android-based console and announced a partnership with the team behind the open source XBMC media player. ArmA 2 mod DayZ is getting a full release soon, and today Activision and Treyarch gave us our first look at Call of Duty: Black Ops II multiplayer. NASA has revealed the Curiosity rover’s landing video and let loose some more pictures from the surface of Mars, and if you’re the mood for a show this weekend, you might want to look to the Northeast sky after the Sun sets on Saturday – it’s there that you’ll see the Perseid meteor shower at its peak.

That does it for the news, but we’ve also got a couple SlashGear originals you should have a peek at. With the Nexus 7 still selling like hotcakes, we ask if Android has it’s first tablet hit in the 7-inch slate, and Chris Burns has a review of the Olympus LS-100 Sound Recorder. Enjoy the rest of your evening!

HTC faces bleak future as July revenues drop 45%

HTC’s 2012 smartphones have been met with favorable reviews, but it looks like the numbers aren’t reflecting the quality of the handsets. HTC has reported its July 2012 revenues, with the company amassing ~$835 million. That’s down 45% compared to July 2011, with the company also dropping ~$168 million compared to May of this year. HTC’s share prices fell by 7% after the news was released, with the company’s stocks sitting at their lowest since November 2008, according to Reuters.

The cause of HTC’s woes? Samsung. One analyst states that while the HTC One X is a strong product, customers are turning towards Samsung’s Galaxy branding instead, snapping up the recently released Galaxy S III. Samsung launched its latest flagship smartphone in the United States across several carriers last month, as well in Europe a month prior to that.

Things aren’t looking so good for the company going forward either, with Michael On, managing director of Beyond Asset Management, claiming that HTC may post a loss in the fourth quarter. The news comes after HTC closed its offices in South Korea late last month, as well as shutting down its operations in Brazil not long before that. HTC’s Q2 results were also disappointing, with profits down 57% compared to the same period in 2011.

HTC recently ran into trouble with Apple regarding patent infringement. Shortly after the launch of the HTC One X and EVO 4G LTE, a ban from the ITC went into effect that prevented that handsets from being imported into the United States, a win secured by Apple back in December 2011. Apple detailed how HTC infringed on a context menu that appeared when selecting certain actions, something which the company promptly removed. The ban may have been brief, but it delayed stock from reaching stores across the country, ultimately causing a knock-on effect for sales of the two handsets.

Clearer calls with HD Voice on Sprint expected before the year’s out

Clearer calls with HD Voice on Sprint expected before the year's out

We were pretty impressed with our demo of HD Voice on the HTC EVO 4G LTE earlier in the year, but are still waiting for the feature’s launch to test it in real situations. We may not have to wait much longer, though, because according to Phone Scoop, Sprint is aiming to roll out the service by the end of 2012. The carrier’s Network Vision architecture upgrade is progressing nicely, a necessity for implementing clearer conversations, although coverage is still patchy. We might see an official launch this year, but HD Voice is unlikely to be widely available on the network or on other devices until well into 2013 and 2014. However, if you happen to be a Sprint customer, HTC EVO 4G LTE owner, connected to the right tower and calling someone that’s ticking exactly the same boxes, listen out for that bump in quality as the New Year approaches.

Sprint LTE makes early appearance in Bay Area

Sprint LTE makes early appearance in Bay Area

Sprint’s LTE signal is well and truly out there, but it looks like roll-out is going smoother than the Now Network had predicted, appearing (though, not “officially launched”) ahead of schedule in the San Francisco Bay Area. Tipsters have told Android Police that they’ve already managed to connect to the 4G network around both Palo Alto and Mountain View, reaching speeds of over 13MBps down and 8MBps up. Coverage doesn’t yet extend across the whole of San Francisco, but bodes well for a swift roll-out — and for Sprint fulfilling its promise of voice over LTE by the end of next year.

Rumored HTC Verizon phablet may land soon, with 1080p screen and 1.5GHz Snapdragon

Rumored HTC Verizon phablet may land soon with 1080p screen, 15GHz Snapdragon S4

Samsung and LG have already embraced the tiny-tablet form factor. It only makes sense that HTC would want to carve out a niche of this niche for themselves. Rumors of a five-inch HTC device have been circulating for some time, but now a report from DigiTimes is lending some credence to those murmurings, and a mysterious handset from the Taiwanese manufacturer has popped up over at GLBenchmark. According to unnamed sources the company has been working on a flagship level (One XXL?) device with a stunning 1,794 x 1,080 display, due to be released in either September or October. If you’re taking that claim with a grain of salt, we don’t blame you. But, an entry for the HTC 6435LVW that just popped up at GLBenchmark.com seems to fit the bill pretty nicely. It has the same listed resolution, which we assume is actually a 1,920 x 1,080 panel with room set aside for Android’s soft keys. The device info has it running ICS, version 4.0.4 to be specific, on a 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 — which should make it quite the powerful piece of hardware. The software build also singles it out as a Verizon handset, which means it’ll be packing an LTE radio as well. Whether the rumored stylus is included, a la the Flyer, remains to be seen, but, we shouldn’t have to wait much longer to find out for sure.

HTC Proto entry level smartphone leaked

HTC logoWe do know that HTC is not on a hot streak at the moment, with the company’s range of products being unable to have it maintain a high position in the overall market where smartphones are concerned, but does that mean the Taiwan-based company has given up altogether and thrown in the towel? Not quite, as we have word that there is an upcoming entry level handset in the market – the HTC Proto which was leaked, and it is rumored to be slightly more powerful than the HTC One V, slotting in nicely right behind the HTC One S.

Rumored specifications as reported by The Verge pointed to the HTC Proto carrying a dual-core 1 GHz Qualcomm MSM8225 processor, having 512MB RAM which is accompanied by a 4-inch Super LCD display that has WVGA resolution. Apart from that, there is also 4GB of internal memory alongside a 5-megapixel camera right at the back. Like many of the more recent smartphones from HTC, the HTC Proto will boast of Beats Audio support to boot. The expected launch date for the HTC Proto? We are looking at most probably a fall rendezvous.

HTC Sense 41 reportedly leaked with custom ROM, One X owners taste the future

It feels like just yesterday that we were getting acquainted with the back-to-basics ways of HTC’s Sense 4.0. Well-known HTC phone modder Football doesn’t want us to get comfy: he claims to have both obtained a leaked version of Sense 4.1’s ROM Upgrade Utility (RUU) and folded it into the 2.2 update to his Maximus firmware for the international One X. While it’s no Jelly Bean, the Maximus-tuned version of HTC’s Android 4.0 flavor appears to give Sense a shot in the arm, taking care of lag in the launcher and live wallpapers in addition to delivering a healthy overall speed boost. That 0.1 numbering gives a good indication of just how light the visible feature set might be, though — other than an existing update to substitute the virtual menu button for a long-press of the home key, the interface changes are mostly limited to dedicated buttons for switching browser tabs and between different cameras. It’s no surprise that HTC hasn’t said a word about its own plans; rumors of new One devices, however, can’t help but fuel suspicions that Sense 4.1 is just around the bend.
