HTC ‘preparing’ Jelly Bean update for One XL and One S, no date yet

HTC 'preparing' Jelly Bean update for One XL and One S, no date yet

HTC has a long history of both raising and dashing hopes of Android upgrades on its devices. Moreover, the Australian network Telstra has often led that emotional rollercoaster, which means the detail on its software update page above is probably best approached with an air of detached calm. It tells us that both the HTC One XL (the global version of the American One X) and the One S have official Jelly Bean updates being “prepared” by HTC — which is slightly more specific than what we last heard on this subject, when the manufacturer said it was “excited” about Google’s latest OS version and planned to support it “across a variety” of handsets. If you happen to own a non-LTE, Tegra 3-based One X, then the absence of that handset on the list doesn’t mean much — that model simply isn’t part of the carrier’s line-up.

[Thanks, Will]

HTC Desire HD ICS update still on track

At the start of the week a Telus upgrade schedule plan was discovered that showed the Ice Cream Sandwich update for the HTC Desire HD had been cancelled. The carrier cited poor performance as the reason why, although it wasn’t clear if the cancellation extended to unlocked and international models. Android Central reached out to HTC to get the official word, and the company has responded by saying that the update is still on track.

HTC said in a statement that both the Desire HD and Desire S will be receiving an update to Ice Cream Sandwich as planned: “We remain committed to providing customers with the latest software updates when possible. As such, we are pleased to confirm we are still on schedule to deliver an Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade for both the HTC Desire HD and Desire S.” That’s good news, with the Desire HD set to be one of the oldest handsets to receive an official Ice Cream Sandwich update.

Telus may not have been happy with the update, but it looks like everyone else will still have a chance to breathe some new life into the phone yet. Even at the time the news didn’t make sense. The HTC One V has similar specs to the Desire HD yet runs Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box, and even the Desire C with its lowly 600Mhz processor is running Android 4.0. Whatever the reason, rest easy knowing that the update should land sometime this summer.

Seidio unveils Desktop Charging Cradle for HTC smartphones

If you have HTC smartphone lying on your desk or nightstand, and you want something a little classier to charge the smartphone with, check out Seidio’s latest product. The company has a new HTC Desktop Charging Cradle that will work with the HTC Evo 4G LTE, One X, and One S. The product is shipping right now.

The Desktop Charging Cradle has a design that allows for synchronization and charging at the same time allowing users to keep their smartphones powered up at all times. Another bit of good news is that the charging cradle is designed specifically to work with smartphones that have the Seidio Active or Surface cases installed. Not having to remove the case to charge or sync your phone is a big deal.

The charging cradle docks smartphones horizontally, allowing users to watch movies, look at photos, or check out other multimedia. The cradle is black with a matte finish and soft touch coating. The coating helps keep the cradle clean and helps to resist fingerprints and dirt. The back of the charging cradle has a power LED. The rear LED helps keep the user informed while not glaring in the eyes. The docking station is shipping right now with the required cable for connecting to a computer for $29.95.

HTC slaps Apple with two more patents from acquired HP portfolio

While it’s not quite as protracted as the long, slow slug-out between Apple and Samsung, HTC’s patent contentions with Cupertino have just been augmented, with two more filings tossed into the pot. The IP in question originally belonged to HP, before being scooped up by the Taiwanese phone maker and pertains to Apple Remote Desktop and Apple Profile Manager along with other embedded network features in iOS and OS X. Apple’s run of luck in this area might not be the greatest just now, but then they do say things come in threes.

HTC Proto in the works?

HTC logoIf you’re looking out for the next HTC handset, it might be a mid-range offering that falls into its Desire range of phones. According to the folks at Stuff.TV who were tipped off by an anonymous HTC source, the next Desire phone – codenamed HTC Proto – will feature a 1GHz dual-core processor, 768MB of RAM, and 4GB of internal storage. It will pack a 3.5″ (800 x 480) display, run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (with HTC Sense of course), feature a microSD card slot, a 5-megapixel rear camera, and a 1,650mAh battery.

No word on how the phone will look like, but we wouldn’t be surprised if it kept HTC’s classic Desire shape that was used for most of its phones in the past. Pricing and release date are yet to be revealed but the phone is expected to arrive later this year. It doesn’t sound too far-fetched to be a rumor, though we feel that HTC doesn’t need yet another mid-range device in its lineup. Then again, choices are always good for consumers. Stay tuned for more details.

HTC Era 42 and BlackBerry Armstrong headed for T-Mobile?

T-Mobile does seem to be a little bit late to the game where the Galaxy Note is concerned, but they might be first off the blocks where the HTC Era 42 and Blackberry Armstrong are concerned. A spy shot of both devices were sent over to TmoNews, showing off these two smartphones which are touted to arrive sometime in September – on the 26th, to be exact.

The names seem to be the only things that were revealed by the leaked image, so the rest of the specifications are left up to your imagination. Some folks claim that the HTC Era 42 could very well succeed the old-school T-Mobile G1, considering how the T-Mobile G1 once carried the “Era G1″ codename. When you throw in the number 42 into the mix, it might just pave the way for a HSPA+ device that has been rated for 42Mbps speeds on the downlink.

As for the BlackBerry Armstrong, this will not be a BlackBerry 10-powered device, since those will arrive only sometime in 2013. Hence, this will be an entry level smartphone, with the BlackBerry Curve 9320 being the most probably candidate.

HTC HD2 gets unofficial Android 4.1 Jelly Bean port, becomes the Phone That Would Not Die

HTC HD2 gets unofficial Android 41 Jelly Bean port, becomes the Phone That Would Not Die

There’s a golden rule for the HTC HD2: if there’s a new mobile OS, the HD2 must get a port. It’s practically a law of nature, then, that Evervolv at the XDA-Developers forums has produced a pre-alpha port of Android 4.1 for the originally Windows Mobile-based legend. More components are working than not despite the extremely early state, with the camera, Google Now and web browser being the remaining bugaboos. We’re still warned that the experimental firmware isn’t meant for day-to-day use, but there’s every intention of making the release stable — good news for anyone who’s eager to avoid a flash-in-the-pan ROM. If that happens, the HD2 will have had nearly as many lives as a cat.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean now on HTC HD2

HTC HD2The HTC HD2 sure is one amazing phone. If having an outdated version of Android on the phone isn’t enough, it looks like you can have Jelly Bean on it too. The folks over at XDA-Developers managed to port over Android 4.1 Jelly Bean onto the phone and it seems to be working fine albeit with some problems. Video playback or the camera isn’t working, and neither is USB mass storage. There are problems with the web browser, some apps not working and Google Now crashing but hey – it’s a start.

Considering how only 10% of Android devices are running on Ice Cream Sandwich, it’s a pretty big deal for this almost 3-year-old phone to be updated with the latest version of the operating system. It’s a long way from being polished, but if you’re keen on checking it out, just head over to XDA-developers for the files.
