HTC Desire HD ICS update reportedly cancelled

If you take a moment to think about the oldest Android device that will be receiving an update to Ice Cream Sandwich, the HTC Desire HD would be near the top of the list. The handset would certainly be up to the task, featuring a single-core Snapdragon S2 processor and 768MB of RAM. GSMArena has discovered an OS upgrade schedule from Telus that would indicate the Desire HD may not be receiving an update to Ice Cream Sandwich after all.

HTC originally promised an ICS update for the Desire HD sometime this summer, although the Telus upgrade path now shows that the upgrade has been cancelled. The carrier has cited “poor device performance during testing” for the ICS update, which sounds a bit suspect. The HTC One V, for example, features the same processor but only 512MB of RAM, yet shipped with Ice Cream Sandwich. Even the HTC Desire C, a handset with a mere 600Mhz processor, is running Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box.

This may be related to Telus’ own handsets, and there’s no official word yet from HTC on the matter. If it does turn out to be the case for all Desire HD models, then it’s sure to disappoint customers around the globe. The only way to get Ice Cream Sandwich on the device in that case would be to turn to the friendly folks over at xda-developers and see what they’re cooking up.

HTC reportedly working on a “unique” Android tablet

While HTC might be known for their Android smartphones, their efforts when it comes to Android tablets has been less than spectacular. That being said, it has been reported (via PC Advisor) that HTC is currently working on an Android tablet is apparently “unique”. This was after HTC was reported as saying that they will not be releasing Android tablets until they have created something truly unique in a market that does seem to be rather overcrowded when it comes to tablet choices and variety. No word on the specs or the features of this alleged tablet, but it will be interesting to see if it will be able to hold up against Apple’s iPad, Microsoft’s Surface and Google’s Nexus 7 tablet. Either way we will be keeping our eyes peeled, so be sure to check back with us at a later date for the details!

Ice Cream Sandwich update for the HTC Desire HD cancelled?

Desire HD ICSBad news for those of you with HTC Desire HD phones, it appears that you might not be receiving an official update to Ice Cream Sandwich. According to the folks over at GSMArena who spotted in an upgrade list for devices on Telus (a Canadian carrier), the HTC Desire HD won’t be getting the update due to “poor device performance during testing”. Pretty strange when you take into account that the Desire HD features the same processor as the HTC One V and has more RAM and the latter runs Ice Cream Sandwich just fine.

Hopefully it’s just an issue with Telus and not a sign for all HTC Desire HD phones worldwide. HTC previously promised that the Desire HD would be getting the update to ICS, so backing down when it’s expected to arrive wouldn’t look good for them. Fortunately, there are tons of custom ICS ROMs out there for Desire HD users so not all is lost if they would like to upgrade their phones unofficially. Any Desire HD users out there still waiting for the official upgrade to ICS?

PSA: Sprint LTE goes live today, honest and for true (update: includes Missouri)

HTC EVO 4G LTE review on table

Sprint’s decision to take its LTE live in Kansas City marked a short prelude to a full orchestral performance — the carrier’s upgraded 4G network is now official. Kansas City and St. Joseph in Kansas and Missouri, as well as 13 urban areas in Georgia and Texas, are taking the leap past WiMAX speeds as of today. Senior network VP Bob Azzi has warned the Kansas City Star that the current LTE access is still mostly for use outside until it expands to the 3G network’s range, although he adds that there will be a coverage map available from July 16th onwards to let EVO 4G LTE, Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy S III owners know when their phones reach full potential. Just remember that the real party starts in 2013, when Sprint hopes to both flick on voice over LTE and ramp up to extra-speedy LTE-Advanced.

[Thanks, Alex]

Update: As locals in the comments have helpfully reminded us, St. Joseph is in Missouri and just sits along the border with Kansas — you know what they say about horseshoes, hand grenades and being close enough.

HTC Vertex HD Android Tablet With nVidia Tegra 3 Processor

HTC Vertex HD Android Tablet With nVidia Tegra 3 Processor

The new HTC Vertex HD comes jam packed with the Google Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich OS, which is combined with a fast 1.3 GHz nVidia Tegra 3 quad-core processor. The tablet also supports Beats Audio to create a truly end-to-end music experience. Additional specs include a 2-megapixel rear-facing camera and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera. Too bad, there is no further info about this upcoming tablet. Stay tuned for more updates. [Slashgear]

HTC 6435LVW with 1080p screen crushes benchmarks

Is HTC working on a new device with monster performance and a 1080p screen? That may be the case if GLBenchmarks are to be believed. The HTC 6435LVW features a Qualcomm MSM8960 processor clocked at 1.5Ghz, but what makes it notable is its exceptional benchmark performance. The Egypt Offscreen 720p test reveals a score of 13,685, beating both the AT&T HTC One X and international Samsung Galaxy S III.

Not only that, but the device seems to feature a 1080p display. GLBenchmark lists the device as having a 1794 x 1080 resolution, which would indicate that some space is being used by the onscreen buttons in Ice Cream Sandwich. Whatever this device ends up being, its also appears to be destined for Verizon, with the OS brand and fingerprint both mentioning Big Red’s name.

If the benchmark listing is real, then we could be looking at a souped up version of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 processor with a beefier GPU. There’s no indication of whether it’s a dual-core or quad-core device, or even if its a phone or a tablet. We’d hazard a guess that it’s a dual-core tablet with a faster Adreno GPU, but anything is possible.

Quad-core HTC device arriving at Verizon?

If you love mystery novels, then you might want to pursue this particular lead of a device from HTC which is said to arrive on Verizon Wireless, but whether it is a tablet or a smartphone (or perhaps HTC’s first foray into the phablet market) remains to be seen. What we do know is, this mysterious HTC device has already undergone a benchmark process at GLBenchmark, where it will carry the model number HTC6435 which does seem to indicate as though this is a follow up to the HTC Rezound.

However, it seems to pack quite a punch underneath the hood, where despite being clocked at 1.5GHz, it still managed to edge out the GLBenchmark scores picked up by other faster devices on different carriers by a whopping 60%. If that is not enough to send your jaw dropping to the floor, take into consideration the GLBenchmark Egypt Offscreen 720p test for the AT&T mystery device that hit a rather impressive 8214 frames, although Verizon’s mystery device picked up an unprecedented 13685 frames (!)

It carries a resolution of a rather insane 1794 x 1080, which might be the next evolutionary step – perhaps it might signify a HTC device with onscreen buttons. Hopefully more light can be shed on this device in due time.

Mystery HTC device flaunts class-leading benchmarks, 1080p display

Mystery HTC device flaunts classleading benchmarks, 1080p display

When we say “mystery,” we totally mean it. We don’t know if this is a phone or a tablet, or even if it’s real — stranger things have happened that concocted benchmarks. All we can say for sure is that a previously unheard-of device called the HTC 6435LVW has appeared over at the Community Uploads section of the GLBenchmark site, scoring a ridiculous 121 FPS in the Egypt Offscreen 720p test — that’s more than twice the score of the HTC One X (LTE), and 20 percent higher than the current performance supremo, the Galaxy S III. But that’s not all, because the benchmark listing also throws up some specs: notably a 1794 x 1080 resolution (could that mean a new HTC tablet with onscreen buttons?) and a Qualcomm MSM8960 processor (could it be the Pro version?). There are too many questions to contemplate, but here’s one final detail: the Android ICS version is described as a Verizon build, so if this thing is legit maybe that’s where it’s headed.
