Latest Hulu rumors suggest it could be up for sale, again

While viewers enjoy promotions like free Star Trek and Kurosawa, Hulu’s owners are once again considering selling the video streaming site. The last bit of news was that News Corp and Disney were considering buying one another out, but according to Reuters, anonymous sources confirm that the board is reaching out to several potential buyers while it considers its options. Another possibility from Variety suggests that the two would remain as part owners, and welcome another party to join, perhaps CBS. This wouldn’t be the first time Hulu’s owners tried to sell the site however, as it went through the whole process — without changing hands — back in 2011. Perhaps this time, with a new CEO in place, all the companies involved can figure out what they want Hulu to be going forward.

Zombieland TV Series May Come To Life On Amazon Prime

Zombieland TV Series May Come To Life On Amazon Prime

Zombieland the movie was released back in 2009. It is safe to say that the movie was a hit. Its fans will no doubt be happy to hear that a Zombieland TV series may come to life on Amazon Prime, provided that enough viewers like the pilot to warrant the production of an entire TV series. The service is moving in to production of original content, much like its rivals Hulu and Netflix. Amazon Studios will be producing 13 pilots, seven comedy and six for children, and it will ultimately be up to Amazon Prime viewers to decide which of these pilots will bite the dust.

Amazon has not given a release date for these pilots, only adds that they will be coming soon. Along with Zombieland, the six comedy pilots include Alpha House, Browsers, Dark Minions, Onion News Empire, Supanatural and Those Who Can’t. The six pilots aimed for children are The Untitled J.J. Johnson Project, Creative Galaxy, Teeny Tiny Dogs, Oz Adventures, Tumbleaf and Sara Solves It. Amazon believes that adding original content will make Prime more enticing for users, can’t say I don’t agree with them on that.

Hulu making all Star Trek episodes free until April [UPDATE]

Apparently today is William Shatner’s birthday, and he turns 82. To celebrate, Hulu is making its entire Star Trek catalog free for everyone. Normally, only Hulu Plus subscribers would have access to all episodes, but now anyone can watch them without needing an account or having to pay up for a monthly subscription.

Screen Shot 2013-03-22 at 2.07.36 PM

Shatner played the infamous Captain James T. Kirk in several Star Trek films and TV series, and while Shatner has become more of an odd character nowadays (now known as the “Priceline negotiator” in those weird hotel booking commercials), he’ll leave behind a legacy for Star Trek fans to remember forever.

Five Star Trek television series are available on Hulu, all of which will be free until the end of the month: Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: Voyager, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and Star Trek: Enterprise. All of these shows are available now to watch at no cost.

UPDATE: We’ve been informed that Star Trek: The Animated Series is missing out of the bunch, as well as “The Cage,” which is the pilot episode of Star Trek: The Original Series.

As an extension of the festivities, Star Trek will be conducting a poll to see which episodes they’ll feature on the Hulu home page, and they’ll also be holding a “Star Trek Madness” tournament, putting all of the major Star Trek characters up against each other to see who is the most popular Star Trek character of them all.

Apple TV 5.2.1 Firmware Update Brings New Hulu Interface

Apple TV 5.2.1 Firmware Update Brings New Hulu Interface

Apple rolled out a couple of firmware updates today, the first being iOS 6.1.3 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. In all that frenzy, many overlooked the fact that a new Apple TV firmware build had also been released. The new Apple TV 5.2.1 firmware update rolled out today and it features a brand new interface for the Hulu service that is integrated in Apple TV.

Content categories have now been added to the top navigation bar and make it easier for the user to jump to their desired category, be it TV, Movies or Search. Each category will show what’s new in it. The Shows You Watch tray allow users to keep themselves up to date with their favorite TV shows and don’t miss any episodes. Playing content is easier than ever before. Decide what show you want to see, press Play and the latest episode of that series will automatically start playing. Captions can be turned on by holding down the Select button until Subtitles and Audio appears. All of this comes with the new Apple TV 5.2.1 firmware update so if you haven’t updated yet, I highly recommend that you do so.

Hulu Plus on Apple TV redesigned with simplicity and easy discovery features in mind

Hulu Plus on Apple TV redesigned with simplicity and easy discovery features in mind

It’s not often that we see those services present on the Apple TV get tweaked, but today Hulu announced its Plus offering has been on the receiving end of a major design overhaul. Clearly taking a cue from Cupertino’s own iTunes app on the tiny media box, the Hulu Plus redesign makes perfect use of a top navigation bar, which, as pictured above, lists familiar entries like TV, Movies, Kids, Latino, Queue and Search — a nice visual (and useful) change when compared to what we’ve been become accustomed to since the app first arrived on the “hobby” platform. According to Hulu, the redesign was driven by the idea to bring quick access to what subscribers are trying to watch, as well as the thought of delivering an easier discovery experience which aims to help with finding new shows and making it easier to watch recent episodes of those that are already preferred. Apple TV owners running the latest firmware can play with the fresh UI now — of course, that’s for those who are already shelling out the required $8 monthly fee for Hulu’s premium ware.

[Thanks, Andrew]

Hulu Plus gets all-new design on Apple TV

Hulu has been relatively quiet lately as far as any redesigns and updates go, but the company has announced today an all-new design for its app on Apple TV. Hulu says they have redesigned the app “from the ground up” and they have made it easier to get the content that you’re looking for on the Apple TV.

HuluBlog_AppleTV_DeviceUI

The first thing you’ll most likely notice in the redesigned app is the new content categories that are spread out along the top of the app, making it easier to jump to a specific section. Inside each category, you’ll be greeted with various other subcategories of sorts, one of which is a section detailing new shows, as well as new episodes for the shows that you already watch.

The “Shows You Watch” tray allows you to jump right in to any show that you want to watch, and Hulu says that this is to make sure users never miss a new episode or lose their place in a television series. Another new feature is the ability to quickly turn on subtitles by holding down the “Select” button while watching a show.

One caveat is that you must be running the latest Apple TV firmware, so if you’re not up-to-date and are wanting to take advantage of the new Hulu Plus layout, now would be a great time to head into Software Updates in Settings and get on the latest software version of Apple TV. From there, you can just boot up the Hulu Plus app to experience the redesign.

Hulu announces Andy Forssell as acting CEO

We’ve known for quite some time now that Hulu‘s CEO Jason Kilar will be leaving the company, a tidbit of information that first showed up in Variety back in August 2012. Since then, more information about the departure has been revealed, but one piece of the puzzle has been missing: who will replace him. That mystery ended today with a letter posted by Kilar on Hulu’s blog.

hulu

Mr. Kilar’s blog post originally went out as an email to the Hulu team, and in it he states that Andy Forssell will be taking his place as the acting CEO of Hulu at the end of this month when Kilar steps down. The current CEO then goes on to praise Forssell, who is currently a “critical” senior executive for the company.

Says Kilar: “You know Andy well; he’s been a critical senior executive and has been here from the start of this great adventure. Andy exemplifies the Hulu culture and has been central to Hulu’s journey, helping to grow this company from 2 content partners and no revenue to over 450 content partners and approximately $700 million revenue in 2012.”

He then goes on to state that Forssell has “strong support” from the Hulu board, having built relationships with many of its members. The decision is not final, however, and won’t be until News Corp. and Disney, the primary owners of the company, decide the direction they will take Hulu in, after which point they’ll decide if Forssell remains as the permanent chief executive.

Hulu taps Andy Forssell as next CEO following Jason Kilar’s departure

We’ve known since early January that Hulu CEO Jason Kilar will step down sometime in the first quarter, and now that we’re well into March, the streaming service has additional news. Writing on the Hulu blog, Kilar said that when he departs “at the end of this quarter,” senior vice president of content Andy Forssell will assume the role of CEO. In addition to praising Forssell’s efforts in expanding Hulu’s list of content partners, Kilar mentioned that Hulu part-owners Disney and News Corporation are finalizing “forward-looking plans” with the site. The exiting CEO isn’t exactly leaving a company in a shambles; the 2012 financial results were none too shabby, and the paid Hulu Plus service has ballooned to a healthy 3 million users.

CBS tries multi-stage syndication for The Good Wife on Amazon Prime, Hulu Plus and TV

CBS tries multiplatform syndication for The Good Wife on Amazon, Hulu Plus and TV

Almost by definition, TV syndication in the modern era leads us to wonder just where and when we’ll get to see a show online. For CBS’ The Good Wife, streaming on third-party services will be a cornerstone of an uncommon, multi-step syndication strategy that puts the internet first. The drama will be available for Amazon Prime Instant Video subscribers starting March 14th, expanding beyond its existing availability for purchase. Hulu Plus members, meanwhile, will get their own turn at streaming in September. Traditional TV will still be around, but it’s notably pushed to the back of the queue — Hallmark won’t have airing rights until January 2014, and most other broadcasters will be denied until a year after Hulu. The new approach another sign that CBS’ one-time cold shoulder to some forms of digital distribution is growing warmer and warmer.
