News Corp. and Disney allegedly in talks over the future of Hulu

According to sources, News Corp. and Disney are in talks about one of the companies possibly buying out the other to take control of Hulu, with NBC remaining the minority in the matter. Both Disney and News Corp. own about a third of Hulu each, and both are said to differ on how they feel the company should be monetized. Says the sources, these talks are in the beginning stages.

Per the two individuals who provided the information and are said to have knowledge about what is going on, News Corp. is of the opinion that Hulu should be primarily monetized via subscriptions, which is a current option with Hulu Plus ($8 per month). Disney, on the other hand, thinks Hulu should instead be dependent on an ad-based business model.

As part of the talks, both Disney and News Corp. will look into making changes to Hulu’s business model, or into possibly selling the service. Although they are in talks, says the sources, no deal is guaranteed and nothing may come of the alleged talks. Neither corporation has had anything official to say on the matter.

Hulu has grown since its humble beginnings, having been formed by Fox and NBC, which is now the minority holder. The service has grown, with the company reporting late last year that revenue had climed to $695 million, and that the number of subscribers was up substantially to 3 million. These rumors follow the upcoming leave of Hulu’s CEO Jason Kilar, who is set to step down at the end of the month.

Hulu part-owners Disney, News Corp. reportedly discuss buying each other out

The new owner of Hulu could turn out to be… one of the existing owners. After an aborted sale attempt in 2011, new rumors suggest current part owners Disney and News Corp are talking over the possibility of one buying the other’s stake out. The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg both tag people with knowledge of the situation as their sources, indicating a disagreement over the video streaming website’s business model — it announced $695 million in revenue last year — as a reason for the talks.

Reportedly News Corp. prefers a subscription based model, while Disney sees an advertising-focused approach as best. Both of them own about a third of the site, while Comcast / NBC Universal owns most of the remaining third but can’t vote, and according to the rumors would remain as a minority investor if a buyout took place. Also playing into this is CEO Jason Kilar’s announcement he will leave the company by the end of Q1, so hopefully any decision on its future are made by the time a new leader is in place.

Weekend watching: Criterion Collection free on Hulu

Attention all you cinephiles out there. Erase all of your weekend plans become something amazing has happened. The Criterion Collection will be available for free on Hulu all weekend long. Granted, not all Criterion films are available, but you’ll find most of them on there, including some titles that Criterion hasn’t even released on DVD or Blu-ray.

Screen Shot 2013-02-15 at 4.44.52 PM

Criterion announced the news via Twitter today as what we’re guessing is their own Valentine’s Weekend promotion. That would certainly make sense, since you’ll be able to sit down with your sweetheart and watch some classic cinema right from your couch while you pour over some wine and maybe even some popcorn for the full effect.

There’s a ton of these movies available on Hulu, so it may be difficult to know where to even start, but Hulu gets you on the right track by showing off the most popular titles, as well as recommended films. They even split up movies into different categories to hopefully guide you to the films that you’ll enjoy the most.

Criterion themselves recommend starting with Breathless, a 1960 film by Jean-Luc Godard about a young car thief that kills a policeman and tries to persuade a girl to hide in Italy with him. If you don’t have any plans this weekend, this might be the perfect time to check out a handful of Criterion films. Granted, you definitely won’t get through all of them over the weekend, but at least you can get a good start for now.

Criterion cancels your weekend plans, makes its Hulu collection available for free

Followers of the Criterion Collection on Twitter or Facebook have no doubt already dove in, but those that haven’t yet heard may want to direct their attention to the Hulu page featured at the source link. There you’ll find hundreds of Criterion titles ready for streaming, all of which have been made available for free this weekend (for those that have access to Hulu, that is). It doesn’t include all of the films Criterion has released on DVD and Blu-ray, but it’s an impressive selection, including many well-known classics and more obscure gems alike; there’s even some that Criterion hasn’t yet released on physical media.

If you’re looking for some science fiction to get started (this is Engadget, after all), we’d recommend an art house sci-fi double feature of Andrei Tarkovsky’s Solaris and Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s World on a Wire — or Chris Marker’s La Jetée, the inspiration for Terry Gilliam’s 12 Monkeys, if you’d prefer something a bit shorter.

Hulu Kids Lock Arrives On iOS

Hulu Kids Lock Arrives On iOSThe Kids Lock feature on Hulu for Android has been implemented for a long time already, so it goes without saying that logic dictates that Hulu’s Kids Lock feature too, will arrive on the iOS platform – or at least, on the iPad. You can deduce as much that Kids Lock intends to protect the young minds from untoward influences of media content on your iPad via Hulu, and in order to make the operations a whole lot easier, Hulu Kids Lock will arrive as a virtual button on the app, so that parents or the guardian of the child will be able to secure their little tots within the Hulu Kids experience.

Of course, when an adult takes over the iPad and wants to watch other more mature rated shows on the iPad via Hulu, the entire process is as simple as entering the account password, and you’re good to go. Other than Kids Lock, v2.7 of Hulu for iOS does not introduce any more new elements other than a handful of bugs that are being fixed, with several backend enhancements introduced to make Hulu’s iOS application a more stable experience.

Hulu Plus gets 'Kids Lock' feature on iPad, enhances the experience for little ones

Hulu’s Kids Lock has already been implemented on Android, and now it’s time for the children-tailored, itty-bitty feature to make its way to iOS — well, at least to the iPad. It’s rather simple, really: Kids Lock essentially comes in the form of a virtual button on the app, allowing parents — or whoever’s in charge — to easily secure their tiny loved ones into the Hulu Kids experience. Meanwhile, getting back to the TV shows and movies watched by the bosses of the house is fairly uncomplicated — all there’s to do is enter the account password and bam, all is golden and everyone can go back to watching Parenthood. Aside from Kids Lock, v2.7 doesn’t add too much more, save for a few bugs being fixed and some backend enhancements to make Hulu’s iOS application more stable overall.

Why No Streaming Service Will Ever Be Perfect

Hulu Plus. Amazon Prime. Netflix. Redbox. In an ideal world, any one of these would someday become an all-encompassing streaming service. One subscription, one price, one ticket out of the cable’s iron grasp. That’s never been the case, of course. But as exclusive content deals keep piling up, it’s increasingly clear that it never will be. More »

Why the Hell Does Hulu Show Spoiler Commercials for the TV Show You’re Watching?

Hulu, for all its good intentions and fairly solid stream quality, kind of sucks. It doesn’t have enough TV shows, it doesn’t have enough episodes, you still have to watch commercials even when you pay for Hulu Plus but worst of all, sometimes those commercials you’re forced to sit through are about future episodes of the freaking TV show you’re watching. Basically, if you watch Hulu, it’s like being chained down to a chair for Spoiler Russian Roulette. More »

What Kind of Maniac Watches Live-Streaming Super Bowl Ads Online?

There are plenty of people who claim to watch the Super Bowl “for the ads.” Well you can force those people to put their money where their mouths are. Once again Hulu is streaming the Super Bowl ads, and only the ads. God save us all. More »
