Uji Shower Head Compels You to Take Shorter Showers

Nothing is more comforting or relaxing than taking a long, hot shower at the end of a very long and tiring day. But are you showering just a wee bit too long for the good of the world’s remaining water supply? Apparently, the recommended time for a shower is seven minutes.

Every second over that would mean that you’re just wasting water. At least that’s the assumption the team behind the Uji Shower are working with.

uji shower green red

The Uji is a shower head with built-in LED lights and a timer. It starts out with a green glow, which slowly changes to red when your seven minutes under the shower are up.

Brett Andler, one of Uji’s co-creators, explained: “It encourages [people] to take shorter and more energy efficient showers. By letting people become aware of how long they’re in the shower, we’ve actually been able to cut shower time by 12 percent.”

Good point. I’m definitely willing to find alternatives for stress relief in order to make sure future generations still have ample water supply. Are you?

The Next Best Thing to Showering With a Dental Hygienist

The Next Best Thing to Showering With a Dental Hygienist

Until we’re all able to shower from bed, Waterpik’s new Showerpik is the next best thing for simplifying our morning routines. It works like any other Waterpik, blasting the spaces between your teeth clean like a dental floss fire hose. But since it taps into your existing shower head you don’t need to keep a reservoir of water nearby.

Carbon Fiber Hammock Bathtub: Relax in Black

Nothing beats a nice, warm bath after a grueling day at work. I find it especially relaxing to just soak in the tub with a good book in hand, with soft music playing in the background.

Regular tubs work just fine, but taking the concept of relaxing baths just one step beyond is Splinter Works with their “Vessel” bathtub.

Vessel Bathtub

It’s an elongated, hammock-shaped carbon fiber bathtub that will supposedly provide you with the most relaxing and luxurious bathing experience you’ll ever have in your life.

It’s massive, so your existing bathroom needs to be large and roomy for this thing to fit.

Vessel Bathtub1

At 2.7m long, Vessel is longer than a regular bathtub, leaving plenty of room to share the experience. Custom sizes are available but it is also designed so that it can be trimmed up to 20 cm to allow for flexible installation. Pictured here in black, it also available in red, blue, yellow, pink, bronze and pure silver.

You can find out more information about the Vessel here. Between its looks and materials, I can’t imagine this thing is cheap.

Neonisin is Toothpaste You Can Swallow

Toothpaste doesn’t sound like the most palatable thing in the world, but some people have taken it upon themselves to come up with the right formulation to make it edible. It’s called Neonisin and it’s going to be available in Japan this summer.

Neonisin

The active ingredient in the edible toothpaste is Nisin, which is a peptide that’s harvested from lactic bacteria. This is often found in soy bean curd. Natural flavoring, plum extract, mint oil, and corn-based thickeners are then added into the mix to create the toothpaste. In some ways, I guess you could say that Neonisin is basically just a tofu toothpaste – or Tofupaste for short.

When released, Neonisin toothpaste will be cost about $8.90(USD) for a 2.5 ounce tube.

T2T Tongue to Teeth is a Tongue-Mounted Toothbrush

This isn’t the first time that someone tried to reinvent the toothbrush. Remember the Rolly rolling toothbrush, where you were supposed to pop one into your mouth and chew to ‘brush’?

The T2T Tongue to Teeth toothbrush takes a page from Rolly, only the T2T is meant to be mounted on your tongue.

Tongue Toothbrush

The Tongue to Teeth toothbrush is meant to help people freshen their breath and brush their teeth when they’re on the go and can’t use their hands, ie. like when they’re driving or walking to their next meeting after lunch. The T2T has been designed to be disposable and has toothbrush built into it, so you really don’t need to do anything else except slip it over your tongue and lick your teeth.

I wouldn’t recommend this to people who have poor gag reflexes. It doesn’t look like the most comfortable thing to put over your tongue either. I don’t even want to think about sizing issues; I highly doubt one sizes fits all. I mean, what about the people with tongues that are fatter than the average?

What do you think?

The Tongue Toothbrush Is the Grossest Way to Be Hygienic

Toothbrushes haven’t changed much. Sure some fancy tech wiz brushes spin the bristles themselves but at the end of the day, after centuries of use, we still have to hold the damn thing. Not anymore. The T2T is a hands free toothbrush that you slip onto your tongue to do your teeth cleaning. It’s the grossest way to be hygienic. More »

Yelp adding hygiene ratings to New York and San Francisco restaurant listings

Yelp adding hygiene ratings to New York and San Francisco restaurant listings

Yelp is great for sizing up unvisited eateries, and soon some users will be able to complement review results with a side of hygiene inspection ratings. “Health Scores” will be added to listings in New York and San Francisco over the next few weeks, with Philadelphia, Boston and Chicago next in line. The most recent rating will show up on the restaurant hub, but go deeper and you’ll find a history of recent inspections, including notes on any violations. A “new open data standard” called LIVES (Local Inspector Value-entry Specification) is behind the feature, allowing local authorities to add inspection outcomes straight into Yelp. We’re sure users will appreciate the extra info when scoping out new places, or even checking up on old favorites — but they might not like what they find. One example restaurant linked in Yelp’s blog post has a Health Score of 92 out of 100, which sounds all good until you see one of the most recent violations was due to “Rodents / Roaches / Flies / Other Animals.” Tasty!

UltiBrush: The Swiss Army Toothbrush

You need to do more than just brush if you want to keep your pearly whites, well, pearly white. Aside from brushing, it’s also recommended that you floss regularly. Unfortunately, a lot of people ignore this advice and end up with overall bad dental health in the end.

The convenient solution? The UltiBrush.

ultibrushThis brush aims to be the king of all brushes because it doesn’t just come with the brush. Rather, it’s packed with toothpaste in an internal compartment and comes with a mirror and dental floss at the bottom. The UltiBrush also comes with a cap that doubles as a rinse cup to make it an even more complete package.

It’s perfect for travelers because this single brush can basically replace your entire dental kit. The UltiBrush is good for forty uses before it’ll need to be replaced. It’s currently up for funding on Kickstarter, where a minimum pledge of $12(USD) will get you your very own brush.
