Editorial: Amazon and Google are undermining mobile pricing, and that may hurt everyone (updated)

Google Nexus 10 and Nexus 7

See the end of the editorial for an important update.

When Google unveiled the Nexus 4, Nexus 10 and a refreshed Nexus 7 in October, the moment was arguably the crescendo of a change in the Android ecosystem that had been building ever since Amazon’s Kindle Fire first braved the marketplace in 2011. Along with a widely expanded Amazon lineup that includes multiple Kindle Fire HD models and a price-cut tweak to the original Fire, two of the largest players in the mobile world now have top-to-bottom device businesses built around selling at break-even prices and recouping their money through content. That might sound good on the surface, but it’s a bad omen for competitors that genuinely can’t respond in kind — and it could erode some of the values of diversity and innovation that we’re supposed to hold dear as technology fans.

Acer Iconia Tab A110 now available for $229.99

Following Acer’s official announcement earlier this month, the Taiwanese consumer electronics giant is now selling the Acer Iconia Tab A110 online for the price of $229.99 via the Acer store and Amazon. Touted by many as a potential Nexus 7 killer, the Acer Iconia Tab A110 sports a 7-inch WXGA HD multi-touch display with a 1024 x 600 resolution. The tablet, which is running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, is powered by a 1.2GHz Tegra 3 quad-core processor and supported by a 1GB DDR2 RAM and 8GB of internal storage.

Other noteworthy features include a 12-core Nvidia GeForce GPU, a front-facing camera, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth, micro-HDMI, and micro USB 2.0 ports. The Acer Iconia Tab A110 is worthy of a second look. It’s perfect for reading, browsing, multimedia, entertainment, and business. Frankly, the specs are quite impressive. But will they be enough to convince you to get one? Let us know your thoughts.

Acer announces Iconia Tab A110 with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, available 30th October

If you’re in the market for an Android tablet, Acer has finally announced the Iconia Tab A110 Android tablet which will be going on sale come 30th October for $229.99. Granted it’s not as cheap as the Google Nexus 7, but perhaps its specs might be able to justify its extra cost. So what sort of specs are we looking at here? For starters you can expect to find a 7” 1024×600 display and it will be powered by NVIDIA’s Tegra-3 quad-core processor. It will pack 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage which can be expanded via microSD, Bluetooth 3.0, HDMI out, microUSB 2.0, and best of all it will come with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean preinstalled! This sounds like a good call considering that there aren’t that many tablets or smartphones these days that come with Jelly Bean preinstalled, which means that users who don’t know or don’t want to root their phones to flash Jelly Bean-based ROMs like CyanogenMod 10, this will save them a lot of time and hassle. So, any takers?

Acer Iconia Tab reaches North America on October 30th for $230, faces a tough fight

Acer hasn’t had an easy mid-year: it trotted out the Iconia Tab A110 at Computex as a budget Android tablet that could still claim Tegra 3 speeds, only to watch the Nexus 7 arrive and leave virtually every other comparable tablet in a tight spot. It’s North America’s turn at the A110 this month, and the side-by-side looks aren’t getting much easier. When the 7-inch Jelly Bean slate ships to the continent on October 30th, it will cost $230 in both the US and Canada for the lone 8GB version — a better value than we see in Europe, but still a slightly awkward middle ground between an 8GB Nexus 7 at $199 and its $249, 16GB edition. We’re guessing that Acer is counting on the microSD and micro-HDMI expansion to tempt would-be North American buyers away from a less flexible (if Google-blessed) rival.

Acer Iconia Tab A110 comes to Europe this fall with Jelly Bean, £180 UK price

Acer Iconia Tab A110

Acer missed its summer launch target for the Iconia Tab A110, but it’s making amends for its timing. The 7-inch, quad-core tablet is now reaching Europe in the fall, but it’s also carrying that rumored upgrade to Jelly Bean — including the same mini-tablet interface that we know best from the A110’s arch-rival, the Nexus 7. Hardware hasn’t moved on since then, however, so you’ll still have to cope with a lower 1,024 x 600 resolution and likely the same 8GB of storage, even with a 2-megapixel front camera offering a slight upgrade. That feature loadout may make the sales prospects difficult, at least in the UK: Brits will have to pay £180 ($292) versus the £159 ($258) Nexus 7. Let’s hope that any US plans involve a price slash.

Acer Iconia Tab A110 will now ship with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

Earlier this year at Computex, Acer unveiled the Iconia Tab A110 which was also expected to ship with Google’s Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. If you weren’t too impressed with the A110 and were thinking of giving it a pass, well here’s some good news as it seems that Acer has announced that the A110 will now be shipping with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean instead. Still no word on when it will be released, but Acer has promised that it will be arriving “soon”. A bit vague but we guess that will have to do for now.

For those who might have forgotten, the A110 will be powered by NVIDIA’s Tegra-3 quad-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz with 1GB of RAM, a 7” touchscreen display, 8GB of internal storage that can be expanded via microSD and will feature connectivity options such as micro HDMI, micro USB and Bluetooth 3.0. If you were still on the fence, hopefully the inclusion of Google’s latest version of Android helped to sweeten the deal for you.

Acer Iconia Tab A110 expected to launch in the UK by the end of September for £179

Back in July, the Acer Iconia Tab A110 was spotted at the FCC. While a release in the US remains unclear at this point, it seems like the tablet will be going on sale in the UK by the end of September and based on its features, it looks like it might be able to give the Google Nexus 7 tablet a run for its money. Revealed at Computex in June, the A110 will sport an NVIDIA Tegra-3 quad-core processor under its hood, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage and will sport a 7” touchscreen display. It is expected to be priced at £179 which will be £20 more than the Nexus 7, although some might find that the extra £20 could be worth it as the A110 comes with a microSD card slot, allowing users to expand beyond the built-in 8GB of memory.

The tablet will come with Android 4.0 ICS installed but it is also expected to see an update to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean in the future. If you’re fine with running ICS and can wait for an update to Jelly Bean, or don’t mind flashing an Android 4.1 based ROM, then perhaps the Acer Iconia Tab A110 might be worth taking a look at.

Acer Iconia Tab A110 allegedly caught brandishing Jelly Bean in press shots

When we last left Acer’s Iconia Tab A110, it was going to be yet another 7-inch Android 4.0 tablet. No big deal. The proposition just became a little more intriguing now that online shop Ebuyer has posted what might be formal press shots of the A110 sporting a fresh coat of Jelly Bean, making it one of the first third-party Android 4.1 tablets that we’ve seen. Assuming the gallery isn’t just a clever attempt to whip customers into a frenzy, the posting suggests Acer’s design will follow the Nexus 7 formula all the way through to the stock interface. About the only differences are that empty home screen and incredibly generic wallpaper. Where it goes awry is the timing: without any hint of a release date, we don’t know if a Jelly Bean update would push the A110 beyond its original summer launch target. Any truth to the story, however, can only mean good things for the tablet’s larger A210 sibling.

Acer Iconia Tab A110 clears the FCC

The good people over at the FCC have had time to play with yet another device, where this time round it would be the Acer Iconia Tab A110 which is in question. Of course, Acer of Taiwan has yet to step forward and make an official announcement surrounding their Iconia Tabs A210 and A110, but to follow where the larger sized 10-inch A210 left off, the Acer Iconia Tab A110 is ready to see action in the US market. Not many details were released in this FCC filing, but we do know that it will have NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 chipset running underneath the hood of this 7-inch device. Hopefully additional details concerning its release date will follow – and without too long of a delay to boot!

We knew Acer had some new tablets in the pipeline — heck, we got our hands on them at Computex last month — but the company still hasn’t officially announced the Iconia Tabs A210 and A110. Still, following in the footsteps of the 10-inch A210, which hit the FCC earlier this month, the Tab A110 just cleared that all-important obstacle for hitting the US market. The filing doesn’t shed too much light on the Tegra 3-powered 7-incher (you’ll find the standard test reports and RT exposure info in the source link below), but then again we already got a good look at the slate in Taipei, and we imagine Acer’s unveiling date can’t be too far off.
