Distro Issue 61 Acer aims high with its Iconia W510 Windows 8 hybrid

With the release of Windows 8 just around the corner, the arrivals of tablets and hybrids that are decked out with the aforementioned OS are also imminent. Sure, we’ve already seen a number of these, but up until now, we’ve yet to spend any quality time with the announced hardware. In this week’s edition of our tablet magazine, though, we finally get to take one back to Engadget HQ for a detailed preview. We offer our thoughts on Acer’s Iconia W510 — a laptop / tablet hybrid that sets its sights on the premium end of the Windows 8 gadget spectrum. On the regular review front, we put the Canon EOS M and the Samsung Galaxy Note II through their paces before serving up in-depth analysis of each. Eyes-On climbs aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis, Visualized gets electrified and Nest’s Matt Rogers tells all in the Q&A. The weekend won’t last forever, so jump down below to snag the latest issue before settling in for a little weekend R&R.

Acer’s Windows 8-based Iconia W510 tablet hits the FCC, ready for November launch

DNP Acer W510 hits the FCC, ready for November launch

Now that we’ve taken a look at the Acer Iconia W510, it’s heartening to see it finally hit the FCC. The documentation doesn’t tell us much we don’t already know about the Windows 8 tablet, though it’s interesting to note it packs a 7300mAh battery, which will hopefully lead to that promised nine-hour battery life. As a quick refresher, the W510 packs a Clover Trail-based Atom processor, 2GB of RAM, a 10.1-inch display, and will cost roughly $500 for the 32GB SSD model. The timing of the FCC listing does seem to point to Acer actually hitting that November 9th launch date, so keep your fingers tiles crossed.

Acer outs a new Atom based Iconia slate with the W510

Just a week after Acer’s announcement of their Windows 8 Iconia W700, the company announced yesterday in the USA the Iconia W510 another Windows 8 Tablet but this time powered by an Intel Clover Trail Atom Z2760 CPU! the Iconia W510 will come in four different flavors (see details below) with a price starting at $499.99 USD and sold without its docking keyboard (That also includes an internal battery). By default the Iconia W510 will come for all models with an Atom Z2760, 2GB of RAM, …

Acer Iconia W510 Windows 8 tablet arrives on November 9, to cost $500

If you have half a grand to spend for the upcoming holiday season for a tablet, would you want to fall back on the Android platform, be a proud iOS-powered iPad owner, or would want to venture into the unknown (as at press time anyways) with the Windows 8-powered Acer Iconia W510 tablet? That really depends on what floats your boat, but the Intel Atom-based Acer Iconia W510 will arrive this November 9th at $499.99 a pop, tipping the scales at 1.32 pounds to boot.

There will be three other price points other than the half grand one, where all of them will run on the 1.5GHz Intel Atom Z2760 “Clover Trail” dual-core processor. Touted to deliver up to nine hours of battery life, it remains to be seen in the situation of real world usage. All models cannot be differentiated by their display either – which is a 10.1″ 1366×768 IPS touchscreen that comes covered with Gorilla Glass, 2GB RAM, 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity, a 2 megapixel front-facing camera, and an 8 megapixel rear-facing camera. Other options include micro HDMI and microUSB 2.0 ports, as well as a microSD memory card reader.

32GB and 64GB models will retail for $499.99 and $599.99, respectively, while for $749.99, you get to enjoy the benefit of a keyboard dock that comes with a full-size USB 2.0 port and a secondary battery. Last but not least, you can party with the $799.99 configuration which sings a tune that targets business users, calling it the Iconia W510P.

Acer Iconia W510 preview: as Acer moves into the Windows 8 era, it returns to its netbook roots

Acer Iconia W510 preview

Here it is, folks: our first Windows 8 device. No, not the first we’ve laid hands on, but the first built-for-Win-8 PC that we’ve been able to take home and spend some quality time with. If you don’t remember today’s specimen, you’d be forgiven: the Acer Iconia W510 is one of many, many tablet / laptop hybrids that have debuted over the past few months. Plus, this isn’t even the highest-end Windows 8 PC Acer has to offer: unlike the W700, which has a 1080p screen and Ultrabook guts, the W510 runs off a Clover Trail-based Atom processor, and has a smaller 10.1-inch (1,366 x 768) display.

Accordingly, the price is also lower: the W510 will start at $500 for the tablet only, though you’ll also be able to purchase it with the detachable keyboard dock for $750. (And if the dock really does double the battery life to 18 hours, you might want to.) Though the W510 won’t be available for a few weeks yet — it goes on sale November 9th — we’ve gotten a hold of an early unit. An important note: the model we tested was pre-production, so we’ll hold off on benchmarking for now and update our story with performance scores and a review card once we have the chance to test a final unit. In the meantime, if you’re looking for a deeper dive on the hardware, you’ve come to the right place.
