Twenty years ago, on December 10, 1993, John Carmack, John Romero and the rest of the team at upstart id Software unleashed a game called Doom upon the world. Twenty years later, both men have written about their favorite memories of the game for you and all fans of Doom to read. Here they are, in their own words…
Much has been said and done about Oculus Rift, where the most recent project involved the Oculus Rift working alongside Kinect in order to create a “Paperboy” game, which is definitely one creative way of approaching the situation. Well, we have reliable word that the legendary John Carmack is set to join Oculus VR as the Chief Technical Officer, and to see him come on board the company behind the Oculus Rift headset would definitely send chills down the spine of those who know just how Carmack is a genius when it comes to introducing new technology or a different, revolutionary way of doing things in the world of gaming.
Fret not though, John Carmack will still remain at id Software, but he will be moving over to Oculus VR’s Dallas office in order to assist them in staffing the relatively new company with developers. Carmack shared, “I have fond memories of the development work that led to a lot of great things in modern gaming — the intensity of the first person experience, LAN and internet play, game mods, and so on. Duct taping a strap and hot gluing sensors onto Palmer’s early prototype Rift and writing the code to drive it ranks right up there. Now is a special time. I believe that VR will have a huge impact in the coming years, but everyone working today is a pioneer. The paradigms that everyone will take for granted in the future are being figured out today; probably by people reading this message. It’s certainly not there yet. There is a lot more work to do, and there are problems we don’t even know about that will need to be solved, but I am eager to work on them. It’s going to be awesome!”
Yes sir, it is definitely going to be awesome, and we cannot wait to see the result of your handiwork.

Legendary game programmer and Doom co-creator John Carmack is getting a new "full-time" job. He’s going to be working as the head of technology at Oculus VR, the company behind the upstart Rift virtual reality goggles.
For gamers who enjoy first-person shooters like Wolfenstein, Doom, Quake, and Rage, you might be pleased to learn that while the first three titles from id Software have gotten their respective sequels, Rage has not been forgotten and that the franchise could have a future. The title was released back in 2011 and has made its way across a variety of gaming platforms, including mobile, but unfortunately apart from that first release, we have not heard much about the franchise since then.
Speaking to the folks at Polygon during Quakecon 2013, id Software’s creative director, Tim Willits, revealed that the Rage franchise is not dead, stating that, “we built the game in such a way where — we made a rich enough universe where it would be quite easy to step back into that world and make something cool.” Willits did not deny the possibility of a sequel but since the studio’s efforts are focused on getting Doom 4 out the door, it could be a while before a Rage sequel will manifest itself.
Rage Franchise Is Not Dead, According To Creative Director original content from Ubergizmo.
First-person shooters lately have been trying their absolute best to either make their games as visually appealing as possible by creating extremely realistic graphics or by making them stylized. But there’s something about old-school first-person shooter games that even though they look OK by today’s standards, you can certainly enjoy their unique experience. A new mod will soon be released that brings the feel of an old-school FPS to modern-day games.
The mod is called gmDoom and contains a partial source port of Doom that brings its HUD, sights, sounds and weapons into Half Life 2. The results of which is a mashup that any old-school first-person shooter could certainly appreciate. The author of the mod GhorsHammer says this mod will be available through Steam Workshop once all of its bugs have been squashed, which they say should only take a few days. (more…)

If you’re looking forward to play id Software’s upcoming Doom 4, you could be in for quite a wait. Originally announced back in 2008, it seems that Doom 4 is not ready yet according to id Software’s John Carmack. He stated that they are hard at work on the game and that it will be “done when it’s done”. It’s kind of vague but hopefully this wait will translate into a game of high quality which id Software has been known to put out in the past. Carmack went on to reveal that id Software had to shut down its mobile division in order to get more staff to work on triple A games like the upcoming Doom 4. This is not to say that id Software will neglect the mobile market completely, but for now if you’re expecting more mobile titles from the developer, you’re out of luck. Until then we’ll keep our eyes peeled for more Doom 4 news, so stay tuned!

A couple of days ago, we reported that there was some speculation that Quake 5 could be announced at the upcoming Quake Con which will be taking place in early August. Since it is only speculation, we guess it’s pretty much up in the air at the moment. That being said, id Software, the developers behind the Quake franchise have recently added a job listing that is seeking a programmer to create a UI for “an unannounced game on future-generation consoles.” The position also calls for the applicant to be familiar with id Software, games, characters, brands and universes. As Joystiq has pointed out, this could mean that we could be looking at Wolfenstein, Doom, Quake, Rage or maybe even Commander Keen. We doubt this game will be announced at the upcoming Quake Con, but if you’ve enjoyed id Software’s releases to date, then this might be a game worth looking forward to. Either way our eyes and ears are peeled for more info, so be sure to check back with us at a later date for updates!

AT&T to sponsor QuakeCon 2012
Posted in: Today's ChiliQuakeCon is less than a month away, and some additional details about the event have been announced. According to a press release this morning – it looks like AT&T will be back this year to sponsor its network for the event’s attendees. While I wasn’t there last year, QuakeCon 2011 was said to have “faster-than-ever streaming and networked gameplay thanks to AT&T” so I guess they can’t go wrong by working with them again.
For those of you not in the know, QuakeCon is an annual Bring-Your-Own-Computer (BYOC) LAN Party and gaming festival held in Dallas, Texas. Attendees to QuakeCon can bring their own computers to participate in tournaments or just attend to check out new hardware, software, and clothing from companies involved with id Software. While tickets for BYOC have sold out, you can still attend the event with a general attendance ticket (which happens to be free). Head over to the QuakeCon website for more details. Any of our readers attending the event this year?
