Acer announces 10.1-inch Iconia A3 Android tablet for €249 and up

DNP Acer announces 101inch Iconia A3 Android tablet for 249 and up

To kick off IFA, Acer’s announcing a new tablet running Android Jelly Bean, the 10.1-inch Iconia A3. Available in both WiFi and 3G versions, the A3 will hit Africa, Europe and the Middle East in early October with a starting price of €249. The slate’s IPS panel sports a 1,280 x 800 resolution, and Acer’s touting the tablet’s audio chops — Dolby Digital Plus is on board to provide “a virtualized 5.1-channel surround experience over headphones.” The Iconia A3 runs a quad-core cortex A7 processor clocked at 1.2GHz, and you have your choice of 16GB or 32GB of internal storage (expandable via microSD, of course).

In addition to launching the Iconia A3, Acer’s announcing new color options for its Iconia A1 and B1 tablets. The 7.9-inch A1 is now available in white, Smokey Grey and Ivory Gold, while the 7-inch B1 comes in Oceanic Blue and Vermilion Red. Head past the break for the full press release.

Acer announces 6-inch Liquid S2, ‘first 4K-recording smartphone’

Compared to many other companies, Acer’s taken a rather cautious approach to super-sized phones. Its first attempt was the 5.7-inch Liquid S1, a rather straightforward Android handset unveiled back in June at Computex. The second time around, though, the company’s taking a more ambitious approach, announcing the 6-inch Liquid S2 with 4K recording capability, a full HD IPS display and a Snapdragon 800 processor.

Acer’s touting the S2 as the first phone to offer this 4K functionality, though all signs point to Samsung’s next Galaxy Note shipping with the same feature. The device sports a 13-megapixel rear camera with LED ring flash along with a 2MP front shooter capable of 1080p video. The company’s also loaded up the S2 with several software enhancements on the camera side. For one, a “quick first shot” feature lets you snap a picture right from the phone’s unlock screen, and you have the ability to adjust focus and exposure separately. There’s also a “favorite mode,” which lets you create up to five profiles with customized settings and effects.

LG will launch its first flat 55-inch OLED HDTV this week in Germany

LG will launch its first flat 55inch OLED HDTV this week

While we’re happy just to see a brand new display technology hit the streets, it was shocking to see LG and Samsung kick off the OLED era with curved displays. That’s going to change however, as LG is bringing the 55EA8800 display to IFA 2013 this week with the notable characteristic of having a shape that’s just like every other HDTV. That it’s flat instead of curved also means this is the first wall-mountable OLED TV, and LG is topping off the experience with 2.2-channel “Canvas Speakers” integrated with a faux art mat behind the display itself. The art theme continues with a “Gallery Mode” that displays high res artwork from painters including Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin, or ones personal family pictures. There’s no word on pricing yet, but after its German introduction other markets are expected to follow — check after the break for the press release and in the gallery for a few more pictures. %Gallery-slideshow77145%

LG G Pad 8.3 revealed ahead of IFA, rolls out globally in Q4

LG G Pad 83 revealed ahead of IFA

Following up on its initial tease from earlier this week, LG has officially revealed the G Pad 8.3 ahead of IFA. The slate’s positioned as the next step from its G2 smartphone, and the company claims it’s the first eight-inch tablet with a 1920 x 1200 WUXGA (Widescreen Ultra Extended Graphics Array) full HD screen. The device features a 4,600mAh battery, and runs Jelly Bean 4.2.2 atop a 1.7 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 600 processor aided by 2GB of RAM. Despite all that, it’s just 8.33m thick and weighs 338 grams. Software enhancements include QPair and QSlide — the former lets you receive messages and calls from JB-equipped Android phones on the G Pad itself, while the latter allows for three apps to run on-screen at once. What’s more, with KnockOn you simply tap the screen twice to wake it up. The G Pad 8.3 will be available globally beginning in Q4 in your choice of black or white with 16 GB of storage. No word on pricing just yet, but expect a hands-on once we catch it on the show floor.

ASUS teases new Transformer Pad coming September 4th, confirms it definitely has bezel

ASUS teases new Transformer Pad coming September 4th, confirms it definitely has bezel

As IFA starts to slowly edge its way over the horizon, the product teasers start to rain. We’ve already seen hints from Sony, an outright admission from Samsung, and speculation from HTC. The latest tidbit, comes via ASUS’s Facebook, which suggests it plans to show a new tablet at the event. What can we say about it? Well, odds on it’s another Transformer Pad, running Android, and if you’re into numerology (and consistency), Tegra 4 inside. Coincidentally, an unknown ASUS tablet (pictured after the break) with model number K00C popped up at the FCC last week, revealing little more than the usual WiFi and Bluetooth radios, and a display somewhere around 10-inches. Though the description of it as a Transformer Pad could indicate that whatever its exact configuration, it’s arrival in the US won’t be that far out.

Archos outs a phone and several Android tablets ahead of IFA

Archos outs a phone and several Android tablets ahead of IFA

The rest of us haven’t even started packing for IFA and yet here’s Archos, spilling the beans about what it’ll be showing off in Berlin next week. As ever, the company’s got lots to talk about. Lots. The lineup includes a bunch of tablets and a handset, all running Android. At the top of the tablet heap is the company’s Platinum range, which includes aluminum-clad slates running quad-core processors, Android 4.2 and displays with up to 2,048 x 1,536 resolution. The 101xs2, not part of the Platinum line, also has a quad-core processor inside, along with front-facing stereo speakers and a magnetic keyboard. Then there’s the Xenon tablet series — three devices that the company is positioning as “cheaper than Apple or Samsung Wi-Fi tablets.” For gamers, the company will be trotting out a currently spec-less GamePad 2, and for kids, Archos is going to show off the skinned and parent-friendly ChildPad.

There are a few more details available for the Archos 50 Oxygen, a flagship handset that features vanilla Android 4.2, a quad-core CPU, 16GB of storage and a 13MP rear-facing camera. The company also used the opportunity to tease a “unique Smart Watch concept.” How is it unique? We can’t really tell you. More information on that and the rest of the above coming soon, we’re sure. Hey, the company has to save something for IFA, right?

Samsung’s concept printers don’t need Bluetooth, come with built-in sound

DNP Samsung printers

Printers aren’t the most interesting to use or look at, but we’ve got to give Samsung credit for at least trying with its latest concept mobile printers. The oval device in the pic above is called Wave, and it can access files saved on a phone directly through the dock, letting you print even without WiFi or Bluetooth. Audiophiles might want to cast their eyes upon the other machine in the pic, however, as it’s not just a printer but also a sound system that can charge phones. Samsung’s scheduled to showcase both of them along with its other, less avant-garde printing tech on September 6th at the IFA 2013. Sadly, we don’t believe the Korean company has immediate plans to bring them to market, so you’ll have to make do with the usual fare for now.

Samsung to show off 98-inch Ultra HD video wall, 31.5-inch 4K monitor at IFA 2013

Samsung

As surely as there will be another round of tradeshows this fall and winter, companies like Samsung will be there with bigger and better tech to show off, which consists of new 4K displays this time around. At IFA 2013, Samsung plans to show off this 98-inch commercial Ultra HD “video wall”, as well as a 31.5-inch Ultra HD monitor. Samsung unveiled its 85-inch UHDTV at CES earlier this year it promised sizes would grow so we’re not surprised it’s combining slim-bezeled versions to create this massive screen headed to storefronts near you. There’s no picture yet for the 31.5-inch monitor and few details, but Samsung is ready to battle with competition from the likes of ASUS and Sharp with detailed color calibration adjustments and support for 99 percent of Adobe’s RGB space.

Sony teases flexible VAIO Flip PC origami-style (video)

DNP Vaio Flip PC teaser video

We believe Sony just proved it’s the master of teasing flexible laptops by using a piece of paper and basic origami skills to tout its upcoming VAIO Flip PC. If we understood the clip correctly, the device can take the form of a laptop and a tablet, but its keyboard can also fold beneath the screen to act as a stand. Sound familiar? That’s because Lenovo’s Ideapad Yoga 11S has a similar form — tell us we’re not the only ones who smell competition. If you missed the teaser video when it went up briefly last week, check it out after the jump. You won’t be able to glean info other than the hybrid’s forms from it, but you won’t have to wait long anyway — the Flip PC is slated for an IFA 2013 reveal.
