iGoogle & iPhone: Find Gas Prices

This article was written on January 14, 2008 by CyberNet.

Over the weekend we decided to do something to keep us busy, and what we came up with was an iGoogle Gadget and iPhone Web App for checking your local gas prices (U.S. only). A full introduction to iGas is available, but here’s a quick overview for those that want to dive right in:

  • A standalone website is available which has been optimized for the iPhone, but really works in any browser. Just point your browser to http://cybernetnews.com/igas to get started.
  • iGoogle users can click here to add the gadget to their personalized homepage.

We have setup a dedicated page for iGas that outlines all of its features, and here is a screenshot to give you a taste of what the output looks like:

Adjust iGoogle Column Layout and Size

This article was written on September 04, 2007 by CyberNet.

If you use iGoogle as your personalized homepage, here’s a great little tip for you. Now you can change how many columns you’d like for each tab! I’m not sure when this feature was implemented, but it’s something that Google Blogoscoped just wrote about, and something I didn’t know was possible previously.

It’s pretty simple, all you have to do is click on the tab you’d like to edit. Then click the drop-down menu for the tab and you’ll notice an option that says “edit this tab.” From there you’ll be able to change the name, as well as the layout of the of tab.  There are options for 1-4 columns, and multiple layouts available for the 2 column or 3 column category.

Click on the layout that suits your needs best, and then you’ll get a preview in the background of what it’ll look like. If you’re satisfied, just click “save” and you’re all set! I was pleasantly surprised when it showed me what it would look like in the background before I clicked save. Remember, you can change the layout for each individual tab that you have, the layout isn’t universal for every page.

Google does some late Spring cleaning and discontinues Mini Search Appliance, iGoogle, and a few other products

Google has announced today that it will discontinue many of its older products. Ever since co-founder Larry Page took over as CEO last april, the company has looked to shave excess weight by discontinuing products are out of date or just unpopular.  Headlining today’s closures was the Google Mini enterprise search appliance. The Mini, which is a smaller box version of its larger cousin, the search enterprise, was designed for customers rather than big business enterprises. Matt Eichner, General Manager of Global Enterprise Search, said in a blog post that the Mini would be replaced by the Search Appliance and cloud-hosted applications such as Site Search and Commerce Search. The Mini will officially be discontinued on July 31st.

Google retiring iGoogle, Symbian Search app, Google Mini, others for 'spring cleaning'

To everything (Turn, Turn, Turn). There is a season (Turn, Turn, Turn). Sometimes those seasons can get a bit convoluted, however — or such is the premise of Google’s “Spring cleaning in summer” post, outlining the end of a handful of tech offerings. Because heck, even a company as big as Google has to pick its battles. On the chopping block this time out are the Google Mini enterprise search system, the Google Talk Chatback widget, Google Video, iGoogle and the Symbian search app. Of course, the company won’t be leaving people hanging entirely. Google’s pushing users toward existing properties like the Meebo bar for Talk Chatback and YouTube for Google Video (which already stopped taking uploads a while back), the latter of which will be fully integrated into the more popular video offering come August. More info on what all this means in the source link below.
